Prince is the Black Beck

I was listening to the Peach & Black Podcast review of Musicology and they mentioned this slice of insanity from our friends at amazon.com. The actual review from them about 3121 contained this jaw dropping nonsense: Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck.

In America, you don't have to be black, to be black. My great great grandfather was a creek indian from south carolina, but he was still black enough to be a slave. Of course, genetically speaking, everyone is black if you go back far enough, as black people are the progenitors of all people on earth.

Exactly what I was gonna say....

.

There is significant Prince influence on Beck's sound (at least on the couple of CDs I have of his), but in terms of the entire package--writing, singing, musicianship, performance, image--Prince has created a musical persona that is so distinctive as to have no equal. No disrespect to Beck, but Beck is no Prince. Only Prince is Prince.

That's actually my favorite Beck song. I am a fan of Beck but let's be honest he went from stoner rock, to lame White boy rap (better than McLemore though) to forced soul rock to boring dad rock (that is really great ambient music). I agree there is only one Prince you can't say anyone else is like him. Take the song I Hate U it is a soulful R&B song with an unhinged Hendrix solo. How many R&B artists can shred a guitar like Prince? How many rock stars can do soul like Prince? How many artists can do both in one song?

Obviously I'm a Prince fan (otherwise why would I be on this site?),
But as a Beck fan, I sometimes wish he'd never made Midnite Vultures...
Would've cut down on the unhelpful comparisons.

I dont know why folks would even compare Beck to Prince. Beck is an extremely talented guy, but he has several influences that he has paid homage to, not just Prince. He's had his Princely moments, but other than "Midnite Vultures", I dont see how folks can call Beck the "white Prince". I LOVE "Midnite Vultures", and see nothing wrong with a true musician who doesnt particularly care about the charts and record sales paying homage to one of his heroes.

You see all kinds of ill shit in those Amazon reviews of all artists. Like Fishbone says...."give a monkey a brain and he'd swear he's the center of the universe." I've always said Beck's charm is that he is a hipster L.A. White copy of Prince that can do about 25% of what the original can do....which isn't bad. I like Beck.....I don't like ill-informed Amazon reviewers....and there are tens of thousands of those. And about Midnight Vultures I thought some of it was dope....but I always chuckle when that song comes on and he goes "He's my Nuuuun!" [allegedly he was influenced by Ice Cube and you know Nun isn't what Cube uses]. And...for what its worth...Beck is loads more talented than Kanye...and you tell Kanye that for me!
