I think you are bang on! He doesn't have a problem handpicking individual songs to perform live from his catalog -- but I think the albums onto themselves are projects he moves on from--onto the next project.

Speaking from an accessability point only, his output over the past 2-3 years has been scattered and hard to get. It would be nice if someone could just go and buy the stuff from one spot -- be it his own site, or iTunes, or Amazon, etc.

That's a great point. 20ten and all of the Internet releases are tougher for new fans than other artists' music. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

There is a chasm between "it's tough being a Prince fan" and "everything Prince does is amazing".
As is typical, someone with a largely negative opinion of Prince who gets upset because everyone doesn't think just about everything Prince does is crap or not good - except during his so-called glory years.

Without the so-called glory years 1980-88.. He wouldn't be a legend today BOB4theFUNK

Yes that period made him a legend but songs like No More Candy For You and U Know show that he is not yet done creating his legacy. Show me songs by Madonna, B. B. King, Paul McCartney or Stevie Wonder from the last 7 years that are as good as those two songs. Those musicians are also Legends but they are done Prince continues to put out gems. Yes there are albums that have clunkers but come on name one song from the last Paul McCartney album that floored you.

Yeah it's very tough being a fan of an artist who has released dozens of albums and hundreds of songs, and whose the most bootlegged in tthe history of pop music with hundreds of shows and hundreds of outtakes circulating. I mean yeah, it's so BORING, like there's really not much music to listen to A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

prince is still the best musician and music innovator of our time. he's like: what frank sinatra was to his generation elvis presley was to his generation james brown was to his generation jimi hendrix was to his generation (and beyond) carlos santana from the late sixties generation to today he survived the gauntlet of bad drugs.
what i'm saying is all of the above weren't consistent in always giving what their fans expected, however they were the best at what they did.
prince is
June 7, 1958
it's his agenda, like it or not. maybe we need to stop seeing him in the memories of the 'way it was' and see it as it is today. after all none of us look the same, talk the same as we did when we became prince fans. we started our admiration of him way back in 1978- via his first album'for you', and etc. the younger prince fans may well admire him for certain phases he took them/us all through as far as his musical ride in sound and presentation(s). however prince is prince and ones expectation of him varies. well so much for my preachology. as for me, i still am an admirer of prince, and feel i will forever be a luver of his musicical genius and musicial styles. he is his OWN man. Some of the songs/albums we get are "growers", when we expect them all to be instant classics. Sometimes, the wrong songs are put on the wrong albums.
Prince played Act Of God at the Detroit concert last month, and it rocked. I've always liked the track, but hearing it live brought a whole new appreciation.

Just been reading this. I think there are two things going on here. Stated or unstated I think we n critics n musicians have put an emphasis on prince as some kind of music messiah. Everyone who knows accepts Prince as a genius. I think even McCartney or Bowie would nod to prince. But the criticism he gets is based on us holding out for a musical messiah. Everyone here has probably felt the same as you but god look at the music he has produced. For me it's sooo good that it actually ruins general music listening . He HAS fulfilled that role. Anymore is just greed. Secondly I genuinely believe Prince is a very insecure man. I think he craves popularity but he's not addressing real issues. I'm probably wrong but musically I think he has a relationship with the public that most people do with private ones. He seems to test that love until he feels vindicated that yrs he was right in thinking you hate him. Essentially he's a masochistic n struggles to be happy. In that regard he's very human n very typical

I feel much the same way. Responding to the topic, I should be satisfied but I'm not. Prince is on a respected mountain high pedestal in my musical catalogue and with all the unreleased material and live shows I've been fortunate enough to obtain there's never a shortage of greatness to get me through this lifetime but..... it is frustrating knowing that it wouldn't take much (physical effort) to get official remasters of his albums. SoTT deserves it! I won't speculate why it doesn't happen but a box set with EVERYTHING remastered would be a dream come true...

Here's why it's tough being a Prince fan...The Isley Brothers are getting ready to release a massive,23-CD (!!) box set containing damn near all their albums remastered with bonus tracks, including an entire unreleased 'live in the studio' album from 1980!!

The guy is speaking the truth clearly. I still think he's the best live act in the world today and his legacy is untouchable but he is of course a total freak and not always in the good way. Speaking in riddles and doing interviews in ALL CAPS is just LAME. And if Larry Graham showed him the way to Jehovah that's fine just don't take the magazine. Of course it's true he hasn't released anything of substance in years (Art Official Cage was actually one of the few half relevant things he's done in years but I wonder how much Joshua A.M.) had to do with it).
As far as 3rd Eye Girl. Let's be serious they're a bit of an embarassment. Lord knows what happened at that Massey Hall Hit n Run show that the band leaked and he skipped out on because he 'wasn't feeling it'. The media cover his ass because they were pumping the story all day and are worried about their comped tickets the next time around. After deleting the 3rd Eye twitter account and clearly spanking them all roundly on the bottom it looks like he rehearsed the shit out of them. That said the first set of Plectrum Electrum material at the Sony Hit n Run show was middling at best. That said, particularly as the show went on, it became clear that Ida Neilson and thankfully TO's Donna Grantis have decent chops and can hold it down- at least in rock mode. That Hannah Welton is a godawful drummer though. Just terrible. Without adding the more versatile members of the touring band like Cassandra O'Neil, Shelby J., Maceo and relying more and more on the sampler I don't think he could pull it off with this band. That said I cried three times at the Toronto show when it finally happened.
It is tough being a Prince fan. Except for those few hours inside the concert if you're lucky enough to get in.
