Prince Shared a Gorgeous New Song in Tribute to Baltimore and Freddie Gray

http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/05/09/prince_shares_baltimore_a_tribute_song_for_the_city_of_freddie_gray_to_be.html

By Sharan Shetty

On Sunday, Prince and his band 3rdEyeGirl will perform a “Rally 4 Peace” concert in Baltimore, which Jay Z’s much-mocked Tidal service will stream for free. In advance of the event, Prince has shared “Baltimore,” a new, groovy number that honors and mourns lost lives like Freddie Gray.

The song, which Prince debuted last week at Paisley Park, is a raw and spontaneous expression of all the singer “needed to get out” after the unrest in Baltimore. The sound is Prince at his playful best—a funky bass line, a wailing guitar solo—but the words (“Peace is more than the absence of war/ Are we gonna see another bloody day?”) strike a more somber, almost pleading note.

falloff I just cannot take these "reviews" seriously at all. disbelief

Read it again: "It is a raw and spontaneous expression of all the singer needed to get out."

Do any of these words apply to the song 'Baltimore'? No, they dno not.

Exactly.

I think that quote was referring to the fact that Prince was reportedly moved to come up with the song on short notice; even working out the kinks of the song in front of a reporter. I don't think they meant "raw" meaning it was James Brown's "Black And I'm Proud..."

Whether u think the song is shit is a whole other discussion....

Wow these reviews are killing me. This is the PC crap that has overtaken the U.S. The media is almost obligated to say this song is good because of the so-called issue at hand. The music itself may be good, but the lyrics are not.

I like the song alright for what it is, but, you clearly don't understand what the word Masterpiece means. Are you saying this is Prince's greatest work? Because you say that about everything he does, and it's not possible that everything is his greatest.

masterpiece

[mas-ter-pees, mah-ster-]
noun
1.
a person's greatest piece of work, as in an art.

wink

Eye am COMPLETELY blown away by prince's studio wizardry as a One_Man_Band...To sit down in one setting, in ONE NIGHT, & do this alone is AMAZING! He is so gifted...

It's always great hearing Prince play guitar, but let's face it, the song is lame. It sure as hell is no SOTT. I'm glad he's doing the concert today and getting involved, but he could've written a much better somg. Something with some true grit!

Hey...it's OK. Just because folks outside the Org bubble r not savaging a non-threatening protest song that wears its earnestness on its sleeve doesn't mean the world is ending....Do I think it's the second coming of "Sign O The Times" or Marvin's "What's Going On"? Hell no. Do I think it's a little breezy pop number that doesn't sound that much different from past "breezy pop" Prince numbers? Yep.

Only on a site dedicated to Prince will u read Prince fans lambasting positive reviews for a Prince song as if their lives depended on it. I mean, we've heard TERRIBLE Prince songs before, people. "Purple And Gold" is out there. That joint still gives me nightmares. Some horrific shit....lol. "Baltimore"? Yeah, it's heavy on the everybody-hold-hands cheesiness. But it's far from terrible. But this is the Org....

We're forgetting something here murph...

I asked people who complain about this song to do it themselves and post up something better...so far? Nothing but silence...

You're mixing up the point.

Are you forgetting where we're at, 'Prince.org'?

If there were a RJ.org I wouldn't be interested enough to go often.

I've never liked Prince's personality but most of his music has been my inspiration and purchase everything he releases.

I think Baltimore is a generic dud (if it goes on sale I'll buy it anyway just because of all the boots I have).

I think Mr. Policeman is infinitely better for the situation both songs address.

I'm always right about these types of things! tease

U need 2 turn in your purple # prince Army card. A real prince fan would NEVER compare a song from his arch rival, from over 35 years ago! That is just like comparing Mj's "Beat It". It's useless & doesn't make sense or a good point at all.

what he said....

Joni Mitchell has come forward and said that Prince wrote a song about her.

He told her it was 'raw and spontaneous, and he just had to get it out'

when he learnt that she was in the hospital.

The lyrics go like this:

'Joni, thank Jehova that you are only ill

and have not been killed like Freddie Gray

and so many others

We live in a US of crying mothers

But enough is enough:

after Mother's Day the whole world

will be filled with love

That's when they hear my guitar play

and peace will be found

like a needle in the hay

Tune into Tidal, Joni, and you'll feel better

Oh, and by the way:

do you know Salma Hayek,

cuz I wanna bed her'

I do topical treatment on teeth with fluoride but I would never drink it daily! Another good example of a government doing stupid things because they are bought off by corporations and off shore bankers.

I'm sure google is to blame for the rise in these sorts of absurd conspiracy theories.

Vaccinations aren't debatable, they are a force for good. if you make them optional, the ability to eradicate perfectly treatable diseases is removed.

I don't know where you get the idea that the government put hydrofluoric acid in water. And you also seem to have misunderstood the way in which fluoride works when absorbed through the gut. Fluoridation is for systemic treatment, not topical. They're two very different things. Not even remotely like drinking sun tan lotion.

There are opinions, and then there's tripe. We get that you don't like it, but to assume you know what's in someone's mind and assume that they are making a mockery or/insulting the people of Balitmore is just ludicrous.

I'm not dogging the song, it's alright, not great, doesn't suck, meh.....

But, come on now. We've explained it to you. Rational people know that one does not have to be able to record a better song before they can critique this one. Nor does one need be an author to critique a novel, a politician to have an opinion on an elected officials performance, a chef to dislike a meal, etc.. ad nauseam.

You are not proving your point by repeatedly insisting those that don't like this do better. You're being silly.

In my not-so-humble opinion, of course. wink

The government...

I keep reading your posts in the voice of Dale Gribble (your avatar) and you sound just like him. It's hilarious. Me personally? Fuck guns. Never fired one. Never wanted to. Don't get it all. I inhereted several when my parents died and promptly sold them/got rid of them. Somehow I made it 48 years living peacefully and never needed a gun; and I've been in some hairy situations.

.

The 2nd amendment has to do with forming and maintaing a militia. There's a qualifier at the beginning of it that's rather obvious, but perhaps we should take it to P&R.

.

Have all the guns you want. I really don't care so don't get me wrong. I just don't undersand the fetishism. The U.S. has a lot of problems but a lack of guns sure as shit aint one them.

.

As an aside: I keep thinking of Prince and his gun mic. Be funny if he broke it out for the performance and thre it in a wastebasket.

I think you honestly need to check yourself into a sanatorium. You seem to post stuff just to get a reaction, any reaction, maybe just to prove to yourself that someone cares what you think. I'm sure the people in Baltimore that the song is intended for will appreciate the song as his performance tonight, that's really all that matters.
