I'm just a bit curious; who in their right mind would sit on such music? A true admirer would've let the music play many moons ago. Why do people hold music like this? I'm serious, why?

The most common and correct answer is that the person who has the music obtained it from some one who works for the record company, knows a band member or from a band member.

If the trusted person shares the music and circulates amoung collectors it is very easy for the record company or artist to figure out who betrayed them (employee at the company, band member etc).

Example:

Prince gives a tape to a fellow band member to take home to learn a new song or work on it. That member leaves the band and many years later has a tape of a few cool demos.

That ex-band member befriends or already had afriend who was into Prince.

Ex-band member gives the tape to that friend in trust to enjoy and hear with the promise that it's for their ears only.

They end up sharing the music with a few people they think they can trust, who in turn do the same thing and BOOM! a new outtake emerges and Prince gets even more pissed and adds another lock to the vault door.

For the same reason you keep your money in the bank, rather than sharing it out with everyone.

Totally agree. That would probably be what I would be looking forward to the most. Very curious on what the "No Light in a Large Room" jam would be. Possibly a rehearsal ? Song wise really curious to hear "Vagina" and "Rough". "Bloody Mouth" is a pretty cool track . It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

TIA, asshole!

Call me naive but I don´t understand this namecalling thing. Are people here angry because someone leaked those songs? On the one hand those who sell pressed CDs of the same ol same ol get blasted here, and rightly so, for stealing from sources that usually provide bootleg material for free, and yet people are called asshole for leaking stuff?

So what makes a "good" bootlegger and longtime , hardcore fan, and who are the "assholes"? lol

I mean, bottomline is that both camps are, at least in Prince´s view, assholes since they are distributing unreleased material against his will, right?

If it wasn´t for people leaking stuff every now and then we wouldn´t even have most of the stuff we are taking for granted.

Not judging here, just wondering what makes a bootlegger "cool" and in the know and respected, as opposed to being an "asshole"?

I´ve never really understood this whole trader and bootleg scene and the attitude behind it.

It's not about being "cool" or whatever... I called this person an "asshole" because he betrayed someone's trust (even though that person was told not to trust any fucking human-being in the first place...) by copying said material from their PC... This material was to be used as "barter" (for lack of a better term) to trade for other harder to find stuff but that seems to be off the table now as the person who stole this stuff said he's shopping it around...

I think it means its all worthless to the hardcore traders now as it could be sold to anybody at any moment, So whoever it was stolen from may as well leak all of it right now before somebody makes a tidy sum

Right. I have assumed that's why the material eventually released on BFTP 3.0 was leaked before that set was officially issued

I'm waiting to see if any of this comes about--but I do have a question about a short live thing I saw out there...

.

It was tagged as "Shut This Down" (a line repeated several times) and the musical backing consisted in part of the little drum break from Slave/Ain't No Place Like U (if I heard right). I'm just wandering if anyone remembers hearing this in a show (and what it was part of), so I can see if it's one I have, since I have tons of shows I've never listened to.

.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I think it was played on the PA before some of his more recent shows, and also at the recent Paisley parties.

I don't know if this is a 'wish list' or something that is real....but whichever, as much as I'd love to see and hear all of this - the short term gain will more than likely mean a long term loss... the reason some of these things are 'locked away' is so that those 'in the know' have something rare in order to trade for even more rare stuff.....the fact that this stuff is coming it out is fantastic for those 'not in the know' - but further down the line it also means that some other rarities may never see the light of day - except for those very fortunate enough to already have it.... so it's kind of a win/lose situation.... a win for most of us for now...but in years to come I wonder how much more may have been flushed out...

that said, I'll gladly download any of this stuff if/when it becomes available....but I'll never pay for a bootleg.....

If people start hawking it around for trade then it won't be long til it leaks. If i was a trader i wouldnt touch it. not even if i had something really shite to trade, like for example Walk Don't Walk "alternate" smile
