I don't hate Planet Earth...

I don't.
I mean, the album sounds like Prince phoned in half the songs, and Guitar is the least single-worthy single Prince has ever released. But, it's not really that bad to me. I find the songs like All The Midnights... to be rather charming, and the humor in Mr. Goodnight to lighten the mood of the album quite a bit.

To me, Planet Earth sounds like Lotusflow3r and 3121 outtakes, and that's actually not a bad thing. Don't get me wrong, it's nowhere near his best material, and it's not even all that good. But, I just don't find it to be terrible, and worthy of the hate it receives.

Your thoughts?

I certainly prefer it over 3121 (although the song 3121 is better than anything on either album).

Somewhere Here On Earth is gorgeous, and I still maintain that if he'd released The One U Wanna C with a video of some honky-tonks doing some goofy-ass line dance, something funny like the Partyman (extended) video, he'd have had a major hit on his hands.

The problem for me is that Resolution is so irredeemably bad it makes you forget about any good you just heard.

I never hated it, it has some of my favourite 2000s tracks on it.

I love Somewherw Here on Earth and All the Midnights. But most of the rest of the album is some of the most offensively shitty material he ever released. The title track is jarring and dumb. Guitar is a travesty with ridiculously stupid lyrics. The One U Wanna C is the one I wanna puke. Lion of Judah is just uncomfortable to listen to; Prince sounds like a crazy bitter old cooter. Future Baby Mama is like a turd stuck to R Kelly's butthair. Mr. Goodnight? Okay, I can tolerate that one. Chelsea Rodgers? Ugh. It's like funk from some alternate universe where nobody is funky. Resolution has some of the worst lyrics Prince ever wrote, and that's saying something. I might be forgetting a song or two, but fuck it.

If this is Planet Earth, then I say bring on the climate change!

A bunch of average songs doesn't make a GOOD album... Furthermore a PRINCE album, where our expectations are always above the norm for this type of artist...

That being said, this is the album I have listened to the LEAST. In my opnion it is the WORST Prince album, not because it is BAD... But because it is so boring and bland. To sum up this album is like listening to On The Couch or Satisfied for 10 tracks...

This is his most boring album he has ever made. I can not opinionate or debate people who feel this album is a GREAT album because I don't think those would be on the level to be a Prince fan whome appreciates his artistic ability and judge him based on his STANDARDS...

Planet Earth is THE MOST BORING PRINCE ALBUM EVER.

I think MPLSound is worse, but I agree on the point that Planet Earth is the most boring. It's godawful! I love Somwehere Here on Earth, but it's not exciting per se. Prince just coasts through that whole album like he's half asleep.

Somewhere Here on Earth is a very nice song... Nothing special, not great, not bad, but not strong enough to make Planet Earth an enjoyable album... I remember listening to this album back when I first got it... I never had such a dissapointment feeling after listening to a Prince album. Even his worst albums have at least one or two good songs at most, hell even NPS had 3 good songs on it... Planet Earth is for a middle aged former Prince fan that is cleaning their house on a Sunday afternoon.

I think the first four or five song sequence is as strong as any Prince album. But the latter half got weak. I think the first few songs on 3121 are a great sequence too. A combo of the first half of each album would have been a killer album! Actualy I think the first few songs sequenced on 20ten are killer too. Combining the first half of these three albums... it would have really blown me away. Prince really seemed to have gone thorugh a phase at that time (in my opinion) where he filled up the last half of albums with more clashing or deflating moments, and the directions didn't really work to build the hype after a great initial build.

I think the album starts strongly, but starts to fade away from about track 6 onwards. "All The Midnights", "Lion of Judah", and "Resolution" really don't do much for me. "Chelsea Rodgers" is a great jam, but somewhat spoiled by weird lyrics.

[Edited 5/3/15 8:43am]

That's just it, though. After Chaos and Disorder, New Power Soul, all the NPGMC drm "pastic" mp3 downloads, and Musicology, I wasn't expecting anything good at all. About the only thing Prince did in 10 years at that point that made me say, "good job, ole boy," was his Superbowl performance.

So, I had no expectations at all for Planet Earth. I mean, don't get me wrong--I didn't love it (and don't really like it all that much), but I certainly don't hate it.

The highlight of the album was on the back pages which gave some great insight into which players were being transfered to which clubs and for how much money. Manchester United and Chelsea were in top form on this particular album.

Planet Earth, Lion of Judah, and Resolution are duds.

I enjoy everything else, especially Chelsea Rodgers (that's our car washing song before the drought water restrictions in S. Cal) deal

LOLZ!!! Good one. I give the first 7 songs and Resolution 3 stars Chelsea and Lion of Judah get booted off the island. I don't listen to those songs. This is what's great about Prince even his worse song can still connect with hundreds of thousands of people. He really can't write a dud. Songs I don't like others do and vice versa. All hail his royal badness!!!

I always thought as a single Guitar lacked originality, but funny enough in Holland it was his last hit. (Highest position no 21 in top40)

So maybe his Stratocaster was worthy wink

The only song I like on this album is "The 1 U Wanna C", I agree that it could possibly have been a hit for him if it was promoted properly and was included on a better album than PE.

I also like the beat and bassline of "Chelsea Rogers" but the lyrics and the vocals irritate me for some reason. The rest of the album is, like many have already mentioned- extremely boring. Not even really bad or anything, just very bland and not exciting or new in any way.

I did love the live performance of 'Guitar' on TV (was is Letterman? Leno?) though, that was ace!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I think guitar is one of the most dull songs he has ever written. Such a boring riff. I mean, if youre going to write a song about your guitar then at least come up with a hook/riff/solo that does justice to the said guitar. And lyrically? Awful. Its one of those examples where Prince tries to fit too many words into one line just to get a rhyme out. Lazy and amateur sounding. Think of any other guitar based songs Prince has done and Guitar will always be at the bottom of the pile to me.

On the flip side, The 1 U Wanna C is quite catchy. A much better effort. Somewhere Here on Earth is great too. The only 2 songs to that might make it onto a playlist. Never listened to the album in its entirety since the day I got it.
