Have you seen the contract that was signed? WB really had to acquiesse on the Masters as the copyright laws were changing and he was on the right side of that legislature..They dont want a protracted legal fight with him that opens the pandora's box via discovery of their business practices

. This is such BS. WBR knew they had little to fear from him because Prince only whines, he never takes shit to court. There was never going to be a legal battle, dude already proved that by his behavior in 1993-1996. . I'm 100% sure their contract with him is real tight, because mere months after signing it he was already bitching to reporters at Paisley Park about it. . Anyone who think WBR was holding a bad hand when they went into negotiations with Prince regarding ownership of his masters is NUTS. Pray tell: how many suits have you seen about ownership of master recordings? How many artists have been complaining? Anyone who thinks "the whole world was waiting for the outcome of Prince's battle with WBR" is wildly off the mark. . I'm 100% sure that WBR hoped to get remasters and deluxe editions out of this deal, but also ensured the contract would contain clauses that benefitted them if Prince decided to change his mind about that. © Bart Van Hemelen

Yes, none of us *knows* what actually went down. But we can make educated guesses based on industry practice and common sense. WB didn't just hand a pile of cash to Prince and walk away whistling like a bunch of numbnut yokels. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I think Databank has it about right. Prince and WB signed a contract, that much we know. We also know that the contract entailed releasing a new album and a PR remaster with unheard songs included. We also know that Prince would get his masters back as and when a remaster was released.

I always laugh when people use that GIF because in Citizen Kane, Kane is applauding a disastrous operatic performance by his wife and is alone clapping at first, then the crowd starts clapping politely because of who he is.
As much as I like Databank, it's not true we KNOW that Prince is contractually obligated to deliver a remaster with extra song. That was the expectation created, but a contract can have one clause about that, and other clauses that can be interpreted in the artist's favor.
In other words, the only thing we really know is that we don't know.

. This is nonsense. Laws are open for interpretation, plus there are contracts involved. Pray tell: where are the numerous other cases like Prince's? © Bart Van Hemelen

LOL! What he's applauding about in the movie isn't the point of posting it though, now is it? I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Funkenberry as an on/off mouthpiece for Skipper shouldn't be overlooked. This kind of reminds me when Prince was whining in interviews about WB dragging their heels after just being signed with them again 5 minutes. . Prince talks bollocks, "ship has sailed on a 30th anniversary" - we know that already, there was a thread the other day saying it's been a year since the announcement and we're in 2015, that doesn't mean any ship has sailed for a remaster at all. I don't believe for a second WB gave Prince a wad of cash, released and promoted 2 new ho-hum albums without something in return. Of course Prince is going to make it look like he did them over, that's what he does.

I'm actually not too sad that the remaster hasn't been released now. There'll probably come a better time for such a release when it has a much bigger impact... WB will perhaps be able to make it a proper box-set release then with a big photo book or something else cool, maybe even a DVD with never seen before footage and "making of" interviews. A true retrospective Purple Rain remastered box-set which the album deserves...but not now.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes i am already waiting fo 50th anniversary also . I think 30 years was too short a time to get this box set ready.

Bart - the real loser is you as you care way too much about another man's business...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Ok, so we should start a petition to ask them to cover legal costs that will likely cost more than the small profit margin a Purple Rain remaster will bring in? Bad idea. Won't make a difference. Had they done this in 1996-2001 it might have given his career a bit of a jolt...nobody cares now. Except a few die hards here.
