How Would You Film/Write a Purple Rain Sequel? This came up in another thread and I thought was interesting question.
.
What are (or were) your ideas for a script that was a proper sequel to Purple Rain. Let's forget Grafitti Bridge exists for the moment.
.
Here was my idea:
.
I think it would be something along of the lines of The Kid breaks out as a star, maybe not a huge one, but he becomes successful. From there they explore the pratfals and the sleaziness of the music industry. Maybe the temptations of drugs are introduced and affect a band member or two or even Appolonia and Prince. Groupies and the trappings of fame strain Prince and Appolonia's relationship - Prince can't stay faithful or something - and there's now a love triangle.
.
Show how fame aint all it's cracked up to be. Prince discovers shady business dealings with his contract and his managers, creative differences with his producers and maybe meets some hostile audiences like what he experienced opening for the Stones. He's misquoted in the press. Maybe his mother or father fall ill at some point to add some drama. The money and the fame aren't solving the Kid's problems. Band members are pissed at not getting paid enough and a few of them go solo.
.
Morris (now the owner of First Avenue), feeling jilted and passed over on the fame train and consumed by his jealousy sells gossip to the tabloids: "The Real Kid" or "The Kid You Don't Know About". Stuff like that. He writes a "tell-all" book and does the talk show circuit. He tells Appolnia about Prince's infidelity on the road. That keeps the rivalry going.
.
Not sure how you could end it though or what the resolution would be. Knowing Prince, he'd start his own church or something and find God again. Maybe he has a spiritual reawakening, prays a lot and stuff, and then releases an album that HE wants to instead of what his managers want and then breaks through into superstardom. Or starts his own church/musical revival thing.
.
Or he dies in a plane crash and Morris and Appolnia get married and have a kid (joke).
.
What are your ideas? This could be kind of fun.
.
Lastly: WHAT IS UP WITH HARD RETURNS on this forum? Why do we have to add periods between paragraphs?

I would write about four clubs on four corners, have morris own the majority, write a song called round and round, have morris piss on a few plants and call the movie "GRAFITTI BRIDGE" AKA PDEXTER

This was my take on it from a previous thread: .
I'd like to imagine there's a lost spin-off movie, a grand rock and roll space-opera where Apples and the girls take their flight to Neptune to find fame and fortune and have a wild interstellar rock adventure spanning the galaxy's hottest spots, full of blue and pink neon, smoke machines, jungle red lipstick and white camisoles with T&A busting out everywhere. And she never gave that little twerp from the mid-west who left her in a freezing lake another thought.
.
.
I agree about the hard returns, it is annoying - sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Worse than that though is whenever I click on an org link from a google search it crashes my browser, tried with IE and Firefox and the same thing happens. I think the forum software needs a spring clean! sea [Edited 4/17/15 11:36am]

He joins a religious cult, and tries to be good, but can't give up his addiction to expensive clothes, perfume, cars, make-up (because he doesn't want to live in the now) and the writing of bad sexual innuendo lyrics.
At the end of the film he has take refuge from debtors, ex-girlfriends and record companies demanding remasters in the legendary vault. "The world does not deserve to hear this!" he cries, literally, thereby ruining his make-up, and he starts a fire. He lives to see one last dawn through a small window at the top of a shelf marked 'Wally'.
Director: Kevin Smith.

here's my idea from a previous thread
PURPLE RAIN II
starring Prince---Sheila E.---Morris Day
***This movie is an urban drama/musical.It will be shot on location (in Los Angeles and Minneapolis).
***In the new movie, the Kid and Morris are now superstars living in Los Angeles. They have record deals and are doing quite well. The Kid and his band are on the road with Morris Day and The Time. After a kickass performance,The Kid and Morris receive a phone call with some sad news.Billy has died.
***They return back to their old neighborhood in Minneapolis to attend Billy's funeral. He died of a heart attack.
***They realize that things have really changed in their old neighborhood.Gangs have taken over, crime is high, and First Avenue has become a ghost town club that nobody really goes to anymore.Everything is doom and gloom.
***Morris discovers that he has a son that he didn't know about before.Unfortunately, his son is going down the wrong path in life (skipping school, doing drugs and hanging out with the wrong crowd).
***The Kid falls in love with a teacher (played by Sheila E.) who's trying to bring music back to the school after budget cuts forced the music department to close. We get to see a few scenes of The Kid visiting her in the classroom and one day,he surprises the students with brand new instruments and he even gives them a lesson.
***After falling in love with the teacher, will the Kid go back to Hollywood and all of its phoniness....or will he stick around in Minneapolis,to be with the woman he loves and to help her in her bring music back to the school? In one scene, they have a heated argument about this. The Kid tells her "I have to continue my tour",and she cries and yells at him "Then go ahead, turn your back on me,on these kids,on this school!"
***There is a subplot concerning Billy's daughter (we can keep Robin Power in this role) and her desperate attempts to become a dancer/singer.
***Can the Kid turn things around in Minneapolis? Will Morris help him? Can they rejuvenate First Avenue and bring back music to this city? Can they stop the dope dealers and show people a better way to get "high" (through love and music)?

All of these ideas are great and comical, but I always liked Soul's idea.

That's...not bad. Prince going back as a music teacher is kind of a cool idea. Reminds me of Treme. I appreciate the funny replies but I was actually trying to be serious. Anything would be better than Grafitti Bridge.
.
Nouveau Dance, for once you made me laugh. Who is "Apples"? Appolonia, right? Reminds me of the SNL "Fly Girls Reunion" sketch with Jennifer Lopez where the Fly Girls have an idea for an outer space movie.

Sadly, the idea you posted seems like something Prince would actually film.

Synopsis : The kid, having found sexo-spiritual bliss as well as stardom, sets out to rabidly bite the hand that feeds him in retaliation for all the BS he had to put up with on his way up. Taking his revenge, the Kid releases a series of arty records while The Time releases funky party stuff. The Time is the bigger success for a while, until Prince comes up with Sign O' The Times,
THE END

I have given this some thought with the assumption that GB was never made. I think the most powerful subplot was the Kid's relationship with his father. Francis L would definitely have to be a part of the sequel to show the next step in that relationship. Killing him off was the first mistake in GB. And Clarence Williams III would have had to return to the role (if this sequel was done in 1990 instead of GB. Even if they did it today, I think CW3 would be as essential as Morris Day. Apollonia would not be though. And if any characters needed to be killed off, it would be Wendy and Lisa. Either kill them off altogether or make them still dissatisfied bitches who left the behind to go do their own thing in obscurity and let the audience revel in how art imitates life.

What do you mean "for once" ?!!

I remember hearing on the radio (back then) that Warner Bros. was planning a sequel to "PR" called "The Dawn". The plot was going to be about The Kid and Francis L trying to resolve their stormy relationship. The DJ said "The Dawn" would come out after P filmed his second movie (which we all know later became "UTCM"). There was no internet or you tube back then, so when you heard this stuff it sounded legit.

What?. You can't top graffiti bridge. It's a crime that it was snubbed for best film Oscar. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

I,too, remember hearing about 'The Dawn'.I think the first time I heard about it was sometime in 1985.I also heard about a planned movie called 'Prince Of Darkness and The Morning Star' but I'm gonna assume that it was just a working title for what became UTCM.

I think it's best to pretend that GB never happened

I would of liked a Blue Brothers/Muppets Movie getting the band back together deal!

For part 2, I would take it back to the beginning a la The Godfather 2. And then part 3 would be about the superstar he has become. What?

Soul...Yes..That's right around the time I heard that too. Jan/Feb 1985...P and "PR"mania was HUGE at that time, so that's understandable why Warners wanted a sequel A.S.A.P. Cash in on the popularity of the film and the soundtrack.
