How many times has Prince played Purple Rain? How many times would guess Prince has played "Purple Rain" since the Recording date to Today (or last week in Detroit)?

I'd say like a zillion since 83. Still sounds good tho . For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Too many. I prefer a set list when you don't know what you'll get. .

A quick estimate would be to count every concert since 1984. He's pretty much played it every show give or take

setlist.fm isn't the most acurate, but it gives a good approximation, I guess.

Too many. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Why? What? | |

Why too many? You ask him. He played it at mostly every show except for a small hiatus. (TGE...) Only the more 'special' shows (aftershow, one off concert, whatever you name them) could be excempt from the song sometimes. By playing it too often the song dies a bit. It needs to be more selectively played to be accepted as it is. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

. Too lazy to research, do a guesstimate, etc?

I quickly added up all the regular shows from '84 up to the 3EG era (per wikipedia) excluding the Ultimate Live Experience / ONA shows (and, before anyone say's anything, I know Purple Rain was played at some of these!) and I got to 834 shows. I'm pretty sure (although I may have imagined it) someone posted something somewhere last year that a particular gig - I think on the Hit & Run Pt2 dates was the 1000th appearance of PR in a set - which probably feels about right when you add in appearances at aftershows, other one-offs and 3EG gigs....so we're probably in the at 1020 by now?
As for the "too many" jibes.....bollocks! The majority of people at a Prince gig will not have been to see him on multiple occassions and will not have listened to countless bootlegs. That's not to say there aren't occassions when PR seems a bit phoned in and performed only out of a sense of duty but it can still be a killer live. Strangely, PR's not a song that would get anywhere near my list of Top 20 Prince tracks (based on physical releases) but it rarely fails to move me when I hear it at a gig....

Now that is very interesting website, approx 974 times. Even lists the most recent in Detroit 2015. How they get all that information? Somebody sends it to them or they have somebody tracting down those Set Lists?

As a starter, try to calculcate the amount of times that P played 'Gold'. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
