They are the big, greedy, out-of-touch dinosaur expecting him to turn the same tricks for money. He wants to move on from 1984, but they won't let him. He ends the stale relationship. Brilliant, poignant and beautiful song about artistic control. The era performances of this song must've felt so bittersweet for him...with "Slave" written on his "turned" cheek. Jdcxc has it right. Now listen with that in mind and it's quite brilliant. Can I kiss you there, down there where it counts?

. For sure!! "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

From what I've read, it's about C Delores Tucker, a civil rights activist with whom he had a bizarre encounter. It could be about WB via a high-and-mighty anti-cursing crusader. Either/or.
