Years and years ago...
I was fired from a high profile position in a high profile way for asserting my rights to my intellectual property.
I was pushed itno entreprenuership to continue my career ....I was now renting space paying bills, building a business. One client became 10...etc,,,,one employee became 30.....


I played it when I cried from rejection, I played it when I had panic attacks from not knowing how I would pay rent, I played it to drown out everyone telling me I was nothing, I wouldnt make it and that my career was dead. I played Cream when my friends became sabateurs and thieves. I played Cream when they said I was emotinally unstable because I fired the fck out of people who were saboteurs and theives. Cuz 'wimmmens be crazy' ....CREAM running through my head as a heartbeat now...understanding and trusting my instincts are spot on and right.

I played Cream in my headphones at night... and I reprogrammed every negative thought into a positive one, and learned I am best outside the box, and that my individuality, how I THINK is my strongest weapon, my best ally and my pot of gold at the end of my own rainbow.

Cream changed how I swam against a sea of NO.

I wore out 4 discs and more than a few walkmans.

The lyrics about death...the ethereal sound of the keyboard/drums...the blues guitar that cuts right through you. I used to play that shit 3 or 4 times a day every day.

The lyrics about AIDS...I took them to heart; it means I wouldn't just sleep with any old body. I'd just about flip to hear the song in concert.

There are more than a few Prince songs that pretty much changed me.

These are probably the main five.

It's Gonna Be Lonely, When Were Dancing Close And Slow, Annie Christian, Another Lonely Christmas, and Free.

...And outta these five, its a tie between When Were Dancing Close And Slow, and Another Lonely Christmas.

Pop Life for me. I remember buying the ATWIAD album on cassette tape and listening to it during my paper round in the morning. When I got to Pop Life it reverberated with me. Then when I heard the 12" UK Mix it became a staple in every Prince playlist I've created since.

I can listen to it when sad and when I'm happy and it just seems to evoke different emotions and outlook. I can't think of another track of his that does that to me.

I agree with you about the "Gold" ending, it can tip my emotional level into overdrive all too easy.

I totally agree about both of those songs. So totally agree.

I think it's unbelieveable what he does with that one song live though. I mean, I'm not religious either, but to get a whole stadium full of people of all colours and backgrounds singing 'God is love, love is god, girls and boys love god above' together in unison is something fucking else.

Anastesia - as is said upthread....when you hear a stadium full of people singing...it makes me want to believe there is a God.

Gett Off

I was passing through a very hard moment in my life, someone I loved so much passed away and since an year or so I wasn't able anymore to feel again the taste of life, I did a lot of things but no joy, no fun, just some sad smile, I was in a "nothing compares 2U" life bubble. Gett Off was so "simple" that gave me the rythm, the curiosity, the courage to go back to basics: sex, girls and then friends, a cold beer...
Now everytime this song is spinning in my head I smile, thanks to Gett Off I bring "fun" back in my life and I've a lot of good memories, something that made me what I am now (and I'm quite satisfied of it )

I was already a huge fan when I heard it. Hell, I was already a major label musician with Sony BMG.

But that song changed how I saw music, how I saw creativity, how I saw.... everything. It was just so ethereal, so different. All the so called "rules" of making music, for me, got thrown out when I heard that song. It made me feel like I could do whatever the hell I wanted, approach things in whatever manner I chose. It was really profound.

when prince does religious in the way of anastesia he can make me listen to him and maybe entertain the thought of god.... when he uses his own mind, he's so much smarter.... than the blurberings of whats been implanted to be repeated.

the are two quintessential relationship songs....they totally reach in through your chest and either rip your heart out or send you into googly-eyed rapture

Anna Stesia, and Gold. I completely forgot about those two songs.

Concerning Gold. Out of all of Prince's post 80's output, Gold is the one song that pretty much changed me. For me. Listening to that song is a spiritual experience.

There are a few that have already been named but the first one was "When Doves Cry." I was 13 living in a foster home for abused kids and the lyrics just hit (no pun intended) home. It was so symbolic of my parents and the voice was hauntingly painfull. Then seeing the video, it still takes me back to those first moments. Pure poetry and pure reality of so many relationships.
