Then again most Prince fans are more mature, more intelligent and more discerning. Compare that to fans of One Direction, Disney Pop, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, likely to be teens in grade school who think everything they do is so cool.

.

But Bieber's fans must be getting tired, no news on him in over a year, no music and not even convictions. I suppose at 21 now, he is over the hill in teeny bopper land.

.

There is nothing wrong with our critique, Prince is a brilliant musician whose best days are long gone and now he just does eccentric and stupid shit. I am sure every other artist's fans would be critical of them too, if they gagged youtube and internet opinions of them, ripped them off with silly websites, make them wait years for substandard albums and promote talentless bimboes, belong to and preach about a Christan cult and then generally do all he can to prove he is a pompous ass drowning in his own ego.

.

Maybe if he did shit to endear himself to us, we would be kinder, but the only good thing from the past 4 years is the AOA album and a few songs off Plectrum Electrum. Everytime he is on a show he acts uppity and shymalian like. He opens no doors to his soul and acts like an aloof asshole.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

The thing about Prince that leads to passionate (and ornery!) fan discussions is that his highs were so incredibly high that they make the lows seem lower. Even his shitty albums are better than the butt end of the output of Elton, Springsteen, Dylan, Bowie, and other legends. If he hadn't kicked so much ass for most of his career, I doubt anyone would find lesser albums like MPLSound so terrible.

AOA was a pretty open door to his soul imo...it was all about him feeling displaced in a new era and unable to connect on a level he can relate to. it wasnt just honest, it was real.

This is very true. To be fair though, I've only been a 'hardcore' fan for like two years nearly now. Before then I was just a casual 'Purple Rain' kinda fan. So I haven't seen most of this stuff that you mention above happening. But if I was around I can imagine myself being a lot more sour than I am now like a lot of the people here are. I only really know about the main stuff such as him closing housequake.com and the diabolical shitstorm that ensued shortly after. But with the stuff like his websites and the buisness side of his mishaps I just think it's a fault in P's general personality that he likes to wear too many 'hats' at once. Buisness man? Is he hell. Same reason as to why the GB movie was awful in most peoples opinions - wearing too many hats at once, director, main starring role, etc etc. Thats nothing we will ever change about him. But if you think about it, even when he does all this shit to his fanbase, people still love him don't they? He may of sued loads of his fans, but a good chunk of us went out last year ASAP to go buy Plectrumelectrum and AOA without the bat of an eyelid, which is interesting as even the people who 'hate all of his post-1988 work' did too.

I was here throughout most of those things and they haven't soured me in the slightest. I prefer to focus on the positives and joy that Prince has brought to my life with his work and that's value that you can't measure.

As do I . I love Prince and have very rarely critisized him over the years. I'm just saying that I can imagine some folks feel this way.

well,Prince said it himself: artists get the fans they deserve lol

I honestly don't think there would be alot of negative thoughts and disappointment if Prince just simply showed a little more respect to his fans.

Release the remasters.Stop holding back! No more cryptic talk and games....just DELIVER!

Madonna's getting ready to release a new album and go on a world tour. The fans are ecstatic and so is she.Win-win for everyone lol See how easy that is? lol Keep the fans happy and there are no problems.

^ No, let's talk about it some more.

It can't be just about the music for some fans because some of them were sued, didn't get a purchased item, etc. but they still enjoy collecting or just coming on the Org -- after all, some of us have known each other for over 15 years. I remember not spending much time in the Prince forum for a year or two, so I was here more to discuss anything interesting with people here.

BUT yeah at some point, everyone has to get over what they didn't like, can't change and make a decision on whether to continue commenting on something you haven't liked in years if it will predictably always be the same old complaints. Leave a comment for posterity, maybe not 100 just to restate again your unchanging opinion -- or at least if you do that, do it with style as some are known to do with great flair and humour.

Otherwise it's just like repeatedly going to someone's favorite restaurant just to loudly complain that the food is horrible and exclaim you're going to vomit, time after time after time... If it's that bad, there are plenty of other restaurants out there, and it's more respectful of yourself and others to treat yourself to what you like and let other enjoy what they enjoy. There's always been a great deal of criticism here at the Org, we enjoy those discussions, but full on multiyear wall to wall bitching is different.

While I agree with most of what you say, one very important fact has been left out. Prince , over the past two plus decades has treated his hard core fans horribly. Because his hard core fans are human beings, this has created bad feelings and animosity. Some of those feelings are vented out on this site. I'm sure some of the folks on this site would be a little more willing to rally around their hero's latest release or be a little more forgiving when he mis-steps if he hadn't

- Sued and shut down Uptown Magazine and a few other FANZINES.

- Sued and shut down the HOUSQUAKE fansite

- Opened his own poorly managed websites, offered lifetime memberships , and then shut those sites down within a year while pocketing our cash ( Hey brother, our lifetime didn't end when you decided to lose interest in websites)

- Threatened to sue have THIS SITE closed.

- Sued or attempted to sue fans who, out of love an admiration, post his music or videos online.

- Crystal Ball debacle

- One Night Alone Debacle

- Lotus Debacle

There's so much stuff I could go on and on. Point is, his hard core fans are human beings and he has kind of crapped on them a bit. So, I would imagine that there is a lot of animosity bewteen P and his hardcore fans. Keep in mind, he has never apologized for any of this stuff. So , I believe some of that pent up anger filters out on this site.

BINGO! or have a Facebook public Q & A on his facebook page, that attracted thousands of fans. He only anwsers one question, then leaves. In other words, stupid shit. lol

Yep!

All his creative decisions early on- were right on the money! He entertained us and surprised us.

Skywalker Ranch= Paisley Park

Somewhere along the way, he decided (Lucas:"that's the story, if people don't like it there's not much I can do about it") (Prince: "I try to please myself musically")

And the reasons people became fans in the first place...well, the creators went in different directions.

I will say, tho, Prince is all about power. Hes made a lot of bad decisions since 1988, and they're getting worse in old age, but its all about having power over his art, his fans, his record companies.

And his aloof/cool/mysterious game he plays was OK when his fans were naive teens, but we're middle aged now and don't have time for his goofiness, especially when he doesn't have the music to back it up~

It's not power, it's control. He's always been a control freak, which BTW isn't necessarily a bad thing.

And there's plenty of middle-aged (and younger) fans who enjoy the goofiness, and love the new music. That's why he hasn't faded away like so many other musicians, and that's why he can still sell out arenas at $200+ per ticket while other musicians have resorted to giving free concerts at casinos and fairs.

To answer the orginal question, every fanbase has just as many crazy and negative fans. They become negative because they are stuck in the past, plain and simple. They can't accept the fact that musicians - just like everyone else in this world - change physically and mentally as they grow older, and they often choose to go in a direction that is not to some fans liking.

We Prince fans should feel blessed that the man still has a great voice and hasn't had a decline in his guitar playing skills, two things which IMO are far more important than his dancing and songwriting and appearance. There's plenty of musicians who lost their voice and/or instrument playing skills at a much younger age.

"Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."

In response to the original question, check out the Ween forum sometime (which, coincidentally has changed it's name to "The Clown Penis Forum" due to massive shit-talking on bandmembers, calling them fa66ot, and ni66er, and other awful names.) Yeah, nice "fans". This place is tame compared to that hellhole. I stopped going there a while ago. Ween never put their fans through what Mr. Nelson has. They allow, and even encourage recording of most of their live shows, and have put out plenty of official live releases as well. On a side note, the cover "Shockadelica" but they call it "L.M.L.Y.P.". Search it out if you want to know what the letters stand for. You may find a new band you like.

It's not power, it's control.

How are you drawing the distinction?

From Merriam-Webster:

Power:

the ability or right to control people or things

: political control of a country or area

: a person or organization that has a lot of control and influence over other people or organizations

I'd put Kevin Smith fans, Tim Burton fans and certain comic book fans in the category of "crazy and negative" but I can't think of a musician. I know that Dylan caught a lot of shit when he went electric but that was a long time ago.

.

Whoever said George Lucas was pretty spot on as well. Original Star Wars Trilogy = 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O the Times. Episodes I, II and III = New Power Soul, Rave and Chaos & Disorder.
