Bowie Bowie Bowie

Prince did some serious copying of Bowie's look for both his clothing and staging from Bowie's Serious Moonlight Tour in 82-83, from the hairstyle, to the suits, to the male background singer/dancers dressed alike, and the classical upscale look of the stage. Hell, the word moon even enters the picture.

And Camille was influenced by Ziggy Stardust, the difference being P would present Camille as a separate artist whereas Bowie was playing a role, letting you know he was Ziggy, or the Thin White Duke...

Let us all thank the heavens that a Tora Tota disc was never released...

and Prince needs to spend less time designing clothes and learn to write an effin' song again! You wanna design clothes, get a deal with Kohl's and Target, he's obssessed with his custom clothing, nobody gives a shit yet there are entire threads dedicated to it here. Always, what did he wear at the globes? what was his hair like?

his image hang-up is just one more bubble that keeps him out of tune with it all, no celebrities or other musicians care to the degree to wear stage clothing as everyday attire, it's silly and clownish frankly. To P it sets him apart, but that's where he's wrong, he needs to concentrateon learning how to compose better.

think on this, forall those years of aftershow gigs and endless surprise shows the man hasn't grown as a musician in almost 20 yrs, it's the same ol shit again and again. He needs to call Wendy and Lisa for music theory lessons even though I know he'd skipon payin' the bill...

On the looks :

Well, they're tie. Forget about Madonna's mainstream success, which is a lot greater than Prince. When it comes to hair styling and clothes,

I really think they're even. Of course, Madonna's status would have you believe that her visuals have been more important to pop culture,
when in fact she just sampled pop culture, or should I say, the gay gotha culture.
Keep in mind it's easier for a woman to access a wide array of looks. Unless you're like Bowie,
unafraid to look homosexual / transexual, Prince has done the maximum possible for a man (hence today's agonizing hair).
Ooh, I almost forgot about the Dirty Mind era panties, so yes, he also went as far as Bowie.

On the music :

Sure, when you consider yourself an urban aware western hip guy, people will hear you ranting on
how radical the choice of "Electronic Producer" as a producer was.
The only major change happened with her voice.
As she grew older, she finally stopped singing like a teen brat and more like a woman.

Be careful, Madonna isn't just a byproduct of capitalism, she is willingfully a part of it.
So you have to be very precise on what reinvention means. Isn't it just a scheme to make sure
your ageing target will still follow you on your next "thought-as-a-blockbuster" release ?

In the end, if they were no "Ray Of Light" or "Music", this thread wouldn't even exist.
These are the only musical risk-taking moves she made.
But she's never departed from the verse-chorus-verse structure in all of her career,
so how much can we call this risk-taking?

On the other hand, we have a guy who started as a low-budget wannabe Stevie Wonder,

only to master almost every genre pop music has to offer, except for reaggae and hip-hop (which he still doesn't get to this day).
And for those who know their subject, and I guess we all do, Prince didn't wait for the hip DJ of the year
to come out with visionary tracks. "Annie Christian", "Something In The Water", "Irresistible Bitch", "Tamborine"...
Prince was already "arty" and "intellectual", at a time when Madonna was still wearing her "Boy Toy" belt.

The only thing that saved Madonna's white ass is to mingle with New-York fags in disco clubs.
She got her Keith Haring credibility, and above all her brother.
The rest is just reinvention as Ford or Nissan thinks they have to reinvent their most successful models.
So they hire a lot of expensive designers and trendsetters, with the specific mission of not altering the initial product.

Prince has a much more ethical point of view, much to our dismay.
Sure, he invented zilch for the last 20 years.
Maybe it's time to hang out with some homos, Skipper.
They usually have better taste and flair, not to mention culture.

Oh wait, you already did?

Wendy and Lisa?

And nothing since?

I guess that explains a lot.
