If it's the way he does it, then it's not "ripping off", especially when you're going out of your way to acknowledge your precursors while doing something they would not have done.

Kiss was one of the best in a series of songs that deliberately evoke JB while being utterly Prince: Possessed, Housequake and Kiss come to mind, but many others such as The Work Part 1. The latter comes closest to mimicking JB formally but it's done intentionally as an heartfelt homage.

I don't know if the Per Nilson Prince docubook is still popular amongst Prince fans, but in this book, he says this in so many words. But he's not just stealing it to use it like you see so prevalently in the hip hop world, he takes it and either makes it his own or he takes it and improves it. Most recently, this is the case with AnotherLove, which is a far superior track than the original.

Also, the first five notes in the title track to Plectrumelectrum is Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" almost note for note. The only difference is additional shorter notes in the second half of the first beat.

While there is a fine line between borrowing notes from a well-known track and going to a new level and "adding that little bitty ting" (like Vanilla Ice said he did for Ice Ice Baby), I would say that Plectrumelectrum is in the first category.

Pretty much exactly. "Rip off" makes it sound like any mediocre musician could do the same.

There are musicians here, let them rip off JB and see how fr it gets.

Besides, if anyone was ripped off with Kiss, it was Mazareti and Brown Mark.

Yeah, it's most likely based on that one.

Not that I think there's anything wrong with coming up with new songs that are based on older ones, as that's how music has worked as long as there's been songs around. Sometimes the copyright holders do, in any case.
