Any Jewish fans?

Just wondering if there are any Jews who are big Prince fans and particularly what's your take on his music lyrically over the years - I mean the religious themes more than the sexual themes, though they cam be intertwined in his music.

This may be more of a general one than a Prince specific one, but what do you think about the Christian references, particularly the messiah, and the increasing Christian fundamentalism over the years - some org'ers even from a Christian culture (though not religious) are turned off by it.
I've been learning a bit about Judaism in the last couple of years, and I understand there's a belief in a dual covenant, and that Judaism does not have the same mission of converting all people, that spirituality and non-Jew covenants can be fulfilled admirably by non-Jews. Would Prince fall in the category of a "good" non-Jew?
Also, most popular pop/rock/funk/R&B acts have no religious/Christian messages- I don't imagine you listen to "Christian Rock" or gospel, etc., so how you feel about listening to Prince? I guess it doesn't bother you, but just wondering what you think or feel when listening to songs with Christian-bent lyrics.
Thanks.

I am, and the mix of sexuality and spirituality doesn't bother me. That's a huge part of Judaism. Sex is really only a taboo topic (when mixed with religion) in Islam and some forms of Christianity.

The increasing fundamentalism (and JW religion) doesn't really bother me - each to his own. The only time I was bothered by Prince lyrics was in songs like Family Name when there was equivalence between Jews and the slave trade or record company 'Masters'. When you listen to the lyrics, he's not really singling out Jews, but they could be misinterpreted.

All true

.

Wendy Melvoin (Real name Melwohm)

Lisa Coleman (changed from Goldman a few generations ago)

Bobby Z - (Robert Rivkin, also brother David Isaac Rivkin, called Butzie by his grandmother).

Matt Fink (Real name Matthew Finkelstein)

Tommy Barbarella (Real name Tommy Elm)

Minneapolis has a very large and established Jewish community, both Liberal, Reformed and Orthodox.

I also suspect that the late Clare Fischer was Jewish although this not confirmed as the name Fisher/Fischer seems to be both Christian and Jewish. Mostly Jewish as I think of the singer Eddie Fisher and Jeff Fischer off American Dad.

.

Then the Execs, Walter Yetnikoff, Mo Ostin, Lenny Waronker, Jeff Gold, Clive Davis, Owen Husney - yep all are Jewish. You can pretty much thank the vision and support of the Jewish people for Prince even having a career. So called Christian companies like RSO and A and M turned Prince down flat.

Never had a problem with his lyrics.
I respect his beliefs and follow the "To each his own" rule when it comes to music.
If thats what drives him to write and compose these days, It's fine with me.
I don't see him becoming a christian-rock-pop act any time soon.

And coming from Israel , I can asure you that the religeous\sex lyrics are a non-issue by most modern liberal jewish music lovers.

I can't recall any time a Prince song was banned from radio air play or anything like that over here.

"Sexy MF" , "Cream" , "Kiss" and obviously "Purple rain" are probably his biggest radio hits on Israeli radio stations along the years.

As he became a JW a while back, I expected him to visit Jerusalem by now smile

It could be a great city for him to play at.

Love it, I can see Prince playing on the Temple Mount, or at least ina prominent spot with purple searchlights radiating through the air.

Well he can try playing on the Temple Mount and start a global religious war smile

That won't happen. But there is a nice venue close by , Just along the old city walls, called "Sultan's Pool" which can be a good choice.

Thanks for the replies.
I was just wondering because there seems to be some non-Jews who are put off by the religious bent of some of his music, so I thought maybe Jews in particular might be annoyed with his "wacky" views.
No, I didn't think the sexual content would be an issue. I read somewhere that it's Jewish law that the woman be pleasures first before the man can come?
Anyway, I dont consider the Jews that he has worked with as "fans" necessarily - they're just doing a job.
I do wonder what his views might be about the jewish faith, since he has worked closely and/or been friends with some, did they discuss their faith with each other.
I've been learning more about the history of Jews and the religion, and it seems to me like a lot of it makes the most sense out of the major world religions.
On a side note, I've been hearing a lot about the documentary that explores Scientology, "Going Clear" - it seems like something P would watch, and I wonder if he'll reflect upon the "prison of belief."

You don't have to be a religious nut to hate Prince, some atheists hate Prince too. Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction) is a practicing jew, and I bet he adores Prince. See how pointless is this going?

It is a strange thread based on a lack of understanding of the jewish religion and culture. Jews don't care what non jews believe about religion. It's not a prostheletysing religion. if a non Jew said to a jew "I'm not jewish but I keep strict kosher because it's what God commands" the jew would think you're a weirdo.
