What is "If I Was Your Girlfriend"?

Clearly it's nothing normal, even by todays standard.

-Is it a ballad? Hmmm, maybe, sure doesn't sound like a typical ballad.

-...Well then, is it a pop song? Nope.

-Is it 1987? Man, I don't think 2014 have catched up yet. 1987 is still in shock and trying to get a grip on what the fuck just happened.

-Does it belong on the charts? Read above.

-Is it Prince? Yes, hell yes.

-Is it from this planet? Don't think so. Only Prince knows.

-Is it big? Dude, it's monumental (yet minimalistic on a sound scale. How do you even do combine those two elements on your own?)

-Is it timeless? It travels through time, slaps bruno mars, chris brown, arianna grande, nicky minaj, taylor swift and other countless fools while telling them to step up their A-game about ten times just to come

2 % closer to this masterpiece.

What is this piece of music that seems to come back and bite me in the ass everytime I hear it. Which would be approximately 2000 times................

Beautiful.

One time I slowed the track down to see what it would sound like 'un-camilled'. I'm wondering what the process behind that was. Did he record the instrumentals at a slowed pace then increase the tempo or other way around? Would appreciate if anyone could infrom me.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

By the time this happened I was already deep in Princeworld but this sent me into such a glorious wormhole lololol

This song is delicious, subversive, twisted and must always be played at 3:30 am when you're doing something you shouldnt do with someone you shouldnt be with in a place you can't tell anyone you went to lolololl

sublime.

yes this song is a gem. When I saw this performed live I was blown away. The SOTT performance is truly touching. A masterpiece in my humble opinion. And your right, it blows alot of the younger artists music away by doing a song in such a mature fashion lyrically and conceptually. Good call.

As said above, GENIUS! The track was way ahead of it's time. When I first got the album in 87, I was 16 going on 17 thinking to myself my friends are going to laugh me out of town for this song. I really thought Prince is coming out, but after the first listen, I was blown away at how Prince described the closeness between two women/sisters, hence the girlfriend. I mean you can't get any deeper than this.

This song will always be my favorite Prince song. It is a complete showcase of his genius. He performed it a lot during his W2A tour. But I wish he would perform like the tender song it's supposed to be, instead he treated it like an rnb dance song. The live rehearsals from 87 of this song are amazing, and of course the Paisley Park New Years performance with Miles is gold.

It's pretty close to what you could call a "funk ballad".

There's something about the slower pieces on the last few Funkadelic records (when they went "synth-funk") that I associate with the style of IIWYG ("Into You", "Promentalsh..." etc.).

From the "In the studio" book, which nicked this from somewhere else:

.

Continuing, Rogers explained that “the timbre of the vocal on ‘If I Was Your Girlfriend’ was achieved using a trick that Prince often used for voice or guitar. The tape machine was slowed down for the recording, using a variable speed control. The speed was returned to normal for playback, resulting in a ‘high-speed’ sound. On guitar tracks, the machine might be brought down to half speed for the recording; but on vocals it was typically tuned to a lower key, although not as low as an octave…

Whenever I hear this track, it reminds me of the start of probably the best 15 minutes of music ever on a prince album- with strange relationship, and I could never take the place of your man following on straight afterwards...

Then I think of the beautiful ones, computer blue and darling nikki, and I'm not so sure..!
