LoL......with all due respect, i've seen your clips on Youtube, your guitar strumming consists of stuff I learned in highschool guitar class and you seem unable or unwilling to keep your voice in tune. I don't believe you have the requiste bona fides to criticize anyone who actually makes a living as musician or a singer, let alone Prince.
Keep practicing though......

Dude what the hell are you smoking? Outside of hardcore Prince fans, no one even knows any of these songs aside from NC2U and Adore. Damn you could have at least chosen the obvious Prince classics like Purple Rain,Kiss , or I Wanna Be Your Lover.. Those are the songs the general public knows and will be the only Prince songs that will be heard and played on radio long after Prince is no longer recording music. They may or may not be his best songs, but they are Prince classics. I love everything Prince puts out. but I'm realistic to know that most of it will only be remembered by Prince enthusiasts. He'll forever be a legend, but will have only a handful of classics. The addition of Billy Jack Bitch in your list is comical.

Again, we were not comparing songs for "popularity" or status as classics. The comparisons were of musical style and tone. Thanks for the opinon though. "New Power slide...."

Come on, this is a joke right? You are much better off offering an opinion as a fan, not a criticism as a musician. When you said " here is me destroying Cookie Jar/erotic city" you were not lying.

i've been away Skywalker. You've held it down and brought such clarity. If only people would READ and not merely try to defend their point. The thread isn't about preference or favorites or case by case comparisons of songs that would be in the same genre. Its about skill at diverse styles and genres with some degree of "success". He's done that best IMO, the longest, and more often than the others on these "lists." And I'm sorry but Irresisitible Bitch IS as funky as JB's best, so is Erotic City!

While I don't think he's the best in any one particular area, I do believe he's the best all-around musical performer, taking into consideration his singing, genre-spanning/blending compositions, songwriting, multi-instrumental abilities, work-ethic, volume of material, reinvention, showmanship, dancing, etc. As far as I'm concerned, Prince is music's greatest treasure.

- Prince's abilities to plan ahead (months, years...) - Prince's abilities to stay focussed for longer stretches - Prince's abilities to market himself and his products - Prince's abilities to extract money from his production in a consistent manner - Prince's abilities to recognise fan demand for products
Etc.

Hellz no. The dude is the entire package and then some, nobody can touch Prince. He is the bar that artists aspire to. The scary part is, he prabably has another good 30-40 years ahead of him still.
One of the things that makes him so mystical/magical, is that music is not his job, it is his life.
If you think you are better than Prince, sit down, write a song in 20 minutes, have it on tape and ready to go 20 minutes later, then share it with the rest of us. [Edited 11/20/14 7:26am] "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

callimnate said: This man gets my vote. . . A true musician, and an all round nice guy. Which means, he's one up on Prince already. Yeah...i heard some stuff by him recently and send some interviews and over the years my view of him has drastically changed. I used to just think he was riding his nirvana fame for some kicks but the truth was the exact opposite. I think his route of unconventional musical education and techniques borne of that add to his appeal. Very much like prince, he can accept imperfect if the performance is intriguing nontheless. As long as the guts there, it good. Also very much like prince, he stresses hard work, dedication, and the love of your work and what you do will bring you success...maybe not sales...but success.

That's my point. We are not talking about semantics. We are talking about different things. Guitar does not automatically equal rock music. It is about the structure, and design of the song. There is a similarity of music that puts it into a genre. I am going to disagree with Let's Go Crazy is a rock song. Nothing about it makes it similar to any rock song of that era. The intro, the main riff, the vocals...all set it out as something else. The song definitely rocks, as an adjective, but not as a noun. As humans, we have a need to group things, so we look for the closest fit. We know what section to buy a Stevie record, Elton John, Bowie, etc. Prince makes Prince records. He is in that box by himself. Well...lgc is a blues song rocked, popped, and turned out to the max. Seeing as how rock was born of blues, by no means is it a stretch to say its a rock song. Rock...for a loooong time was cranking th blues to '11'. Lgc acheives exactly that.
