Nah, they toured together so they apent a lot of time in each other's company. They were basicaly friends, and sometimes rivals. Definitely not enemies, though. The stories of Rick James and his band vs Prince and his band are better than The Time vs The Revolution.

Prince studied Rick's stage persona, jacked it, emulated it and then took it to another level. He also wooed Vanity away from him in much the same way that Morris's character goes after Appolonia in Purple Rain. And Jill Jones too if I remember correctly. Rick James was putting together a girl group, but Prince was a harder worker and beat him to the marketplace with his own ideas and personnel. Fact.

If Rick was envious of Prince, he had a right to be. But at the same time Prince usurped Rick's cultural movement and took it to the next level. I doubt even Prince would deny this. I think that is why Prince never really supported the new cats that came up after him. He knew from how he behaved that it was possible for someone to assume his momentum and leave him feeling left behind like Rick.
