PlectrumElectrum - The Ocean

On the way home from work I was listening to PlectrumElectrum and thought, "Yeah, I got that" - razz

So I got home and started working it out - quickly noticed the beginning of the lick is the same as Led Zeppelin's The Ocean. The two quick hammers and run down the pentatonic - (not the run back up).

Nothing wrong with that - just sharing an observation -

I'd post the tab if I thought I was allowed - guessing not!

yep, slow that shit down and it is Led Zeppelin for sure

I wish 3rdeyegirl would become Lenny Kravitz's band and leave Prince alone.

In several interviews with Donna she states about her Suites album that it is a collection of her favorite chords & riffs & inspiratations of those sounds. I think it's more homage to what she likes & what inspires her more than her ripping off other artists. If you watch the interviews you'll see she's pretty open her music & creative process.

I've been saying this since the song appeared on the 3EG website. It's pretty obvious.

Obviously. I was just teasing for jokes really but borrowing is a necessary part of any creative process smile

wow .. so PE is the ocean

.

pretzel is Iron Man

.

and whitecaps is is Wooden Ships

.

do u ever get the feeling prince thinks his fans are stupid .. like he puts on classic rock radio .. rips off a handful of songs and thinks all the rnb fans won't know where he stole it from ..

.

the difference between stealing and paying tribute is that a tribute will improve upon a theme .. prince has taken these themes and shoved them into his mediocre songs and simply made them worse .. so ima call it stealing .. dude cant write even on the guitar? that is sad .. so josh wrote aoa and the girls ripped off classic rock radio and called it PE .. good on prince .. more time to iron album covers on his pjs

I'm not trying to hate on the song - I wouldn't have sat down to learn / play it if I didn't like it. It was just one of those funny moments where my hands just went to the right place on the neck first try - and as I tried to sound it out I started playing The Ocean - it entered my hands before it entered my mind.

no offense steakfinger - didn't know you already commented on this - I had just poured myslef a tall beer and was working out a song on my guitar, had a funny moment, and thought I'd share. You can have full credit for recognizing it first.

Prince constantly does this. I love the song "Guitar," and as a U2 fan, it's obviously a tribute to "I Will Follow," "Colonized Mind" is more of a ripoff of Miram Makeba's "Quit It." Same sound, same lyric of "No responsibility." Still, Prince made it a better song. But it sounds more like the original than "Anotherlove" on PE does. And Prince admits remaking "Anotherlove." SMH!

A riff does not a song make. And Donna's homages do not equate to Prince stealing anything. And Josh coming up with sounds on the computer doesn't mean he "wrote" AOA.

P was very clear that Josh did a lot of the music on AOA .. the PE songs sound like they took a bunch of classic rock riffs and simply twisted them enough to call them their own LEGALLY but clearly there is not much originality going on here .. hardly a tribute .. a lot of strait up carnage that can't be denied .. ahh i remember when prince wrote his own music and it didn't sound like a cheap knock off of music that was way better .. p did this with dreamer too .. clearly he tried to combine Imagine and Vodoo Chile and call it his own ... the result was a shitty flat go nowhere song that does nothing beyond sounding like a pale rip off of 2 truly great songs .. at least AOA had a few elements that sounded original .. even if they were come up with by Josh

Do you know what the difference between production (Art Official Cage, U Know, This Could Be Us, Time, Way Back Come) and song-craft is? Providing a beat to work with is not a song..

And again, you don't seem to understand that portion of a riff doesn't make a song.. wink If you were to play either album to anyone familiar with Prince's sound but strip out the vocal you'd always know it's Prince because regardless of the base track or the riff the song is made from what you put together, how you put it together, what you play, how you play it. But anyway... carryon.

Or Chuck Berry's Back in the USA, which the Beatle's did a remake of.

Why do you point to those songs in particular?

You mean Roll Over Beethoven, which is basically the same song as Back In The USA.

Zeppelin of all people has no room to call people out for ripping them off. Half of their catalog is ripped from someone else, including Stairway to Heaven. I'll post links if people don't believe me.

Sorry i left out his remixing of FunknRoll. Was just calling out the tracks where we see his co-production input.

that is what I was saying...as far as stairway...Zepplin will win it is not identical and not substantial enough.

I am one too! This I am not sure Spirit can win. I would say they ought to be happy it helped their song.

I doubt Spirit will win, but damn if that ain't straight up stairway to heaven, Spirit should win something. I've been sort of following this too, wondering what will end up happening. Probably nothing, swept under the rug.
