TICTACTOE appreciation

This song is so dreamy, oh the guitars. i'm intrigued to check out the Cocteau Twins now. I had thought of the O's as letters previously, but its interesting to think of them as zeroes, mixing letters and numbers. 'Buncha' is a fun word. The whole 'blind' discussion is interesting. Unclecleopusha? i was tickled to read that in norway, tictactoe is called "twiddles and bears" lol.

My favorite songs of the 2 albums! Reminds me of those dreamy songs prince used to record with Wendy & Lisa in 85-86.

It reminds me of a George Clinton funkadelic style jam. This song is amazing and I have wonder about the meaning of the lyrics. years from now this song will hold up.

Exactly what I was going to say! thumbs up!

.

The backing vocals and melody are screaming out for that whimsical melancholy that Wendy, Lisa and Susannah brought.

I wonder if that is a metaphor for previous relationships? X's meaning ex-wife, exgirl. Zeros as is completely failed relationship. Some of the other lyrics are reminiscent of past. Anyways it's a beautiful song.

Great song, like dreamy vibe, I agree it is reminiscent of a Wendy and Lisa collaboration like Splash for example or their solo song Water to the Wave.

I like it for the reasons already mentioned.

It has that afterhours vibe and apparently it was recorded at an afterparty (or a demo of it, at least). Another association I've had with the song and the way the guitars sound would be some of the aftershow stuff ("Just My Imagination" from Small Club?).

Maybe they didn't bring it? This is Prince without W&L&S and shows that he can write in this style without them. Whitecaps is another example.

The wooh is on the one!

I find all of their albums good (but their sound is very different in their first two albums than it is on the rest of their discography). I think the best place to start with them is probably Blue Bell Knoll, IMO its one of the best albums released in the 80's. Their best album of the 90's is Four Calendar Cafe, different sound from Blue Bell Knoll but equally breathtaking.

Change it one more time..

Who didn't bring what? Prince wrote those songs any way, it's in him not just W&L. I was just saying I can hear that downbeat they have in their combined voices (all 3/4 of them) in this song, it's of that style, of that era of Prince.

Some people here regularly claim that W&L were behind the whole ATWIAD/Parade/DF sound, which I think is truly exagerrated, but they won't listen to reason.

Right I get it, I didn't get the whole "they didn't bring it" - 'it' being that sound. My brainfart/over-reaction there! smile

.

I remember originally a lot of people mistakenly thought W&L did backing vox on Planet Earth, so clearly the sound isn't unique to them per se. But I think what we're all on the same page here in saying is the song brings to mind 85/6 era P. and I was just saying you can almost imagine that unique sound of their (P, W&L) combined voices on this track especially. Just to clarify, I wasn't saying W&L "made" that sound for anyone who may have thought that. Let's not open that particular ugly can of worms any more than it already is!

Someone else will have the exact details, but I'm certain they confirmed in some chat or interview that they added instrumentation only, no vocals to the songs they contributed to on Planet Earth.

lezama, thank you for the recommendations!.......................SuperFurryAnimal, interesting insight about Xs and 0s meanings. My usual association with Xs and Os is kisses and hugs. i guess the song is about relationships with unclear communication...........................the images this song paints in my mind reminded me some of romance1600, etc.

I like it too, it has a lush laid back "suite" feel.

I love that rhythm guitar backing and some great drumming. It has a great dreamlike ballectic feel. I can see Prince and the girls sitting on oversized cushions, with Prince on the largest one, playing a ovoid guitar while the girls croon along. Yeah definitely too much jesus juice this weekend.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

YES!!!! I love the melody, can't get it out of my head and the gorgeous harmonies... ok the lyrics are weird (I'm convinced the song's about Mayte... 'who knows where the zeros and the 'eXes' go...' Mayte's on Hollywood Exes, her birthday is November and she is/was a ballerina... hmmm.) but I just love it!!!

My second favorite on Plectrumelectrum.

I agree with what others have said, brings back a bit of the 1985 vibe.

I love that album as well.. when did Prince say that that was his favorite? I remember him mentioning his like for them many years ago in an interview but I didnt recall him mentioning an album.

Love it. But the lyrics are somewhat ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, when Prince is singing about shooting his ego on sheets, etc - I'm all for it. But a game of tictactoe played by blind people is inherently entertaining in an altogether different sense.

I love TICTACTOE! It is one of my most favorite songs overall from both of the albums. I'd like to study the lyrics. I seem to have an issue though with the concept of having a "bunch" of blind people playing tic tac toe. Why would there be coordination to have them all together playing that game. And why would one assume they just throwing zeros and x's around, not knowiing where they go. There is a way that blind people can play tic tac toe successfully. Just a little thoughtlessness from the songwriter but oddly it doesn't crush the overall effect of the song on me. I really do love it!!! I replay it over and over. It captivates me really. I think it may end up being an unreleased single, one of those hidden gems not many people will get to hear.

Duh is right. Obviously it's a metaphor. The problem is that it's a lazy, artless one.

wow, this is so interesting. it goes to show how diverse the tastes of P fans truly are. this song is SO skippable for me. this and Boy Trouble are the only "blemishes" on Plectrum for me. The album has been in HEAVY rotation for me since it came out but I've only listened to this song about 3-4x in its entirety.
