It's like having 4 cars at the same time in ownership... You can only drive 1 at a time, so without dis-respect, isn't one all you ever needed? A whole pizza (which I can't eat now) has up to 12 pieces, But you can only eat 1 slice at a time... so, isn't 1 piece enough and share the rest with any ONE? It's not how much you have but that you have 1, the one you are... will to share the one you will always be, one with you and One with me. Take care... Arjuna. . | |

That portion of the song was dedicated to Chick Huntsberry. The Breakdown was written immediately after the video of P, MJ, and James Brown surfaced. It was then promptly and quietly placed in The Vault. P was reportedly mortified to have to relive that night and was grateful to Chick for whisking him away to a private setting without judgment. According to sources, Prince claims to have been at a "crossroad" at that point, and the bassline of the hook was actually a nod to the Bone Thugs-n-Harmony track of similar nomenclature. | |

----------- Co-Sign if you really take the time to listen to the lyrics I believe most of the songs are about her. He even mentioned the age difference in one song. I think this young girl did a number on him | |

When was the last time Prince dated age-appropriately? It could be about any of his fuck buddies, or no one - just a story. | |

Back in the day, it would have been about Susannah Melvoin and been good! Yeah, God.
This song seems to be talking to a higher power -- or at least to someone with a higher power. Someone that has been present over a long period of time, through P's changes, downfalls, shortcomings, etc. A higher power -- so, whether directly or indirectly, God.
"You keep breaking me down," implies to me that this power is, little by little, stripping Prince/the character singing of his shortcomings and limitations. The final Breakdown, presumably, would be when mortal limitations - his body -- breaks down. Like those aliens in Cacoon, when they take off their skin suits.
What I think is clever about this song is Prince's use of the word "Breakdown," taking it from something terrible, to something painful, to something liberating. Nice work, Prince, you sometimes-wordsmith. | |

Is God the default topic every time we don't know what Prince is referring to? Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. | |

Well the lyrics do discuss a young lady who has her own money, does not appear to need a man and is stringing P along. All you have to do is listen. If you follow the songs somebody is giving P the business. [Edited 11/20/14 20:48pm] | |
