Anyone who pays attention to numbers and chart figures on a regular basis knows that these are actually decent figures.

Consider this - I know of an artist who had a #1 hit on the Billboard. His next album had features from all the hottest rappers. That album sold less than 2,000 copies in the first week.

Given that there hasn't been a massive promotional push and no music video yet, I think these sales are pretty good.

The only sales figures that im bothered about are the 2 I purchased myself. Each sold a total of 1 in the first week taking them to #1 and #2 respectively. Sales will plummet now as I envisage they will sell zero on next weeks chart. But they are getting consisent airplay throughout my house and car.

I love Prince and am a loooong time fan, but I don't buy everything he makes just because I do/am. If I don't like the music, I will not buy it, simple as that. I didn't buy either CD this time.

wow .. 2 million likes on facebook but only 40 thousand records sold .. unfortunately it makes sense .. prince has 40 thousand that will buy anything .. the rest is based on the quality of the music .. 2 million people want to like the new prince record but just cant

In this day and age does not owning an album indicate that they don't like or are not listening to it? The 40,000 that have bought it are not made up totally of people who will buy anything by Prince.
AOA is the first album I have bought since Musicology.
You may not like the album, big deal, but don't presume to think that none of us have a discerning ear.
Coming from a man that holds Kanye West, Beyoncé, and Rhianna up as the standards Prince should aspire too your opinion is worth zilch to me.

Militant is right, the numbers aren't terrible...It's 2014, record sales are dead.

People don't typically buy albums anymore.

The average(born dead) person now uses a Streaming service, creating playlist to listen to there music.

The economics makes sense. $9.99 a month.

As much as you like these albums, the reality is they will fall quickly from the charts.

What helps is...He does have an older fan base, not everyone actually buys Prince's albums immediately. Vinyl release should see a slight sales push also.

Dating back to SOTT, Poor single/promo choices have always plagued his sales.

i am exactly in the same boat/position as you!! This is the first Prince release that i haven't bought on the release date in prob 25-30 years. i will more than likely buy them to give it my honest repetitive listen as well as to keep my "collection" complete. But with the exception of several Lotus Flower tracks, I haven't listened to any CD with any regularity since TRC, as i just haven't found the recent releases "challenging" enough for my ears to want to listen to over and over. I do hope to like this new release and my expectations are low so will see.

oops, off topic. I meant to say that sales will be directly based on the success of the first single. I know a 56 year old artist will have a tough time on the radio but if there is a strong song and proper WB push it can happen as the average Joe is not going to buy a Prince CD just because it is "Prince"! For most, he is recognized for his incredible talent but he has really become more of a punch line due or at best an artist people want to see in concert as long as it features 1999, PR, LRC, etc.

But no worries, after that incredible Yahoo event the other night, that i sacrificed sleep for, it really pumped me to run to the store and purchase this new release!! NOT, lol! What a joke. Anyway, good luck on the first single Prince, seriously.

These people with the sales projections obviously didn't know that Prince had a secret weapon: Maya Whatshername with the album launch party. Her wonderful performance at the party at least should bring another 50,000 in sales for both albums. Her alarming knowledge of Jimi Hendrix, and music history was quite a site to see. And nobody else has ever given such interesting commentary on "Prince And The Power Generations."

She's got almost half a million subscribers on Youtube. Say what you want about her performance that night - she's no doubt telling all her subscribers about the new Prince albums. That kind of advertizing is worth more than a TV commercial.

3121 did not sell 100K+ the first week in US. It was somewhere around 50k because they kept talking about it being one of the lowest selling number 1 records that year. On another note even if AOA sells around 45,000..that's great for very little airplay

From wikipedia and there are more sources that 3121 sold 180k...
3121 reinforced Prince's big comeback after the release of 2004's Musicology. It became the first Prince album ever to debut at #1, with 183,436 sold in its first week. It knocked the soundtrack for High School Musical off the top spot, and became Prince's first #1 album since 1989's Batman. Eventually it was certified Gold by the RIAA.

It looks a little bad for Princey:

40-45k for AOA

and

21-24k for PE

not totally certain where it will place them in the overall chart.. these look like just new release projections...

YOUR NEW RELEASES: It looks like Blake Shelton will battle Barbra Streisand for next week's #1. It just so happens that The Voice coach Shelton (seen here in a mullet-tastic pic from more than a decade ago) is one of Streisand's duet Partners, so he'll have some claim on the top spot no matter what. Here are this week’s key debuts:

Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Nashville) 80-90k
Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville) 65-70k
Prince (NPG/Warner Bros.) 40-45k
The Script (Columbia) 24-27k
Prince & 3RDEYEGIRL (NPG/Warner Bros.) 21-24k
Tove Lo (Island) 19-22k
Colbie Caillat (Republic) 17-19k
Melissa Etheridge (Me) 10-12k
Gerard Way (Warner Bros.) 10-12k

And yes, Prince is indeed releasing two albums this week, a funky affair under his own name and a rock-skewing workout with distaff trio 3RDEYEGIRL. We'd love 2 know what U think of them. (10/1p)

find it hard to believe that prince's first week album sales would lose nearly 80 per cent in five years in the usa ?...from over 180,000 for lotusflower to roughly 40,000 predicted for aoa ?...surely album sales haven't collapsed to that degree .. confused

Why did I think 3121 debuted with less sales?.....I'm tripping. If the sales estimates hold then everyone in the top 10 got smacked down.

Only 60.000 albums sold with 2 releases ?lol Oh god, what a slap in your face. There is nothing more ridiculous than an album tailored for the charts with eurodance and boring rnb that doesn't sell.
