What song did Prince butcher the most by the time of its release? Looking at songs as they were initially conceived or recorded compared to how they sounded when they were actually released, I think Prince butchered Tick Tick Bang more than any other song. The original, unreleased version is fantastic. The version released on GB is a partial birth abortion set to music. It's fucking terrible. Add the "video" (shitty scene from the shitty movie) and it just gets worse. What's your pick for Most Butchered Song? "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I like the album version of Can't stop this feeling i got, I like the unreleased version of Soft & Wet(2) more than the album version , it seems more funky to me , but i ain't saying he butchered the released version

Endorphinemachine. Probably one of his GREATEST songs from the 90's and yet he managed to give it a keyboard massacre for the Gold release. Thank goodness for crystal clear bootlegs.

Gold. The unreleased version is way better. The released TGE version's keyboards are ridiculous. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I'd love to hear the version of Lovesexy described by Eric Leeds, before the layers of production were added. From the way he described it, the album was radically different at one point. I love the album as it is, but always interested in alternate versions and different permutations. I agree with Tick Tick Bang, the original had such punch and more urgency, sometimes it is better to go with your original gut feeling and not over think things. Data Bank. The Revolution version is a live groove with a sense of fun that sounds like no one else, the released Time version is just a mess of try-hard rubbish. Didn't even realise there was a good song in there until I heard the bootleg.

I wouldn't count remakes like Tick Tick Bang, Large Room With No Light, Extra Lovable...all were at least 8 years old at the time, the last two over 25 years old.
Endorphinmachine is probably the biggest crime. In fact, most of the Gold Experience is overproduced. It would have been interesting to see what the album would have looked like had he not been fighting with Warners. Interactive, though not a perfect song, is better than We March. The interludes talking over the music was a huge crime. As bad as interludes are, they should never go over the music like in BJB...Jam & Lewis went crazy with interludes, and Prince likes to copy trends...so it is what it is.

I always listen to the 10,000 Wallpaper (?) boot now instead of TGE or Come. It's just better. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

While I can't deny Endorphinmachine was miles better without the cowbell. The overall production on the Gold experience worked well I think. The shiney shiney production value was part of the albums theme. I also think the segues work very well - although they made more sense in the context of "The Dawn" triple cd set with songs correctly catagorised under each heading/segue.
His biggest crime in terms of butchering a song IMO - Everyday is a winding road. He took a great song both lyrically and musically and attempted to make it into a 1994 sounding house song. It just didn't work on any level.

although maybe not fitting with the premise of your original post, i'd have to say 'purple house'. i can't believe the hendrix family released that turd.

Probably "Fury". That's the first one I thought of. The SNL live version was blistering hot but the studio version was bland and plastic.

I agree with this one ! How beautiful do the words have to B, before they conquer every heart

The studio version of "Fury" might have always been like that. He just did a more energetic live version of it on TV before the album was released and many fans were disappointed.

We Can Funk on GB is the original version based off the 1982/83 version. The 1986 We Can Funk is the actual remake. I love both of them. As for Extralovable, Prince really screwed that one up. The original is pure classic Prince while the remake is garbage. __________________________________________________

The GB version of "We Can Funk" might be based on the original recording, but he must have added a whole lot that wasn't there originally. I doubt even the chorus ("I'm testing positive 4 the funk"...) was there in any form.

Just because of the intro? It's hardly that long. I wouldn't consider that "butchering".
