On Art Official Cage you mean? Any chance you cna post the sped up vocals somewhere?

It's Prince, 100% not a single doubt.

No need to post it, just download some free audio editing software like Audacity and speed it up 18-20%

Nah, it's not Prince. That's patently obvious.

After hearing Josh speak on the Yahoo special, it sounds like it could be him.

After finally playing it I can say I was surprised and happy and I liked it all immediately. I guess it's the first time since The Rainbow Children.
This AOA could become one of my two or three favorites out of the eighties.

So, after deliberately not listening to AOA in a week and a half I turned it up loud today since my apartment building was empty and I can unreservedly say I love this album. It has it's uneven moments (and some things that irritate me, like the chipmunk vocal on Breakfast Can Wait) but I can listen to this album as a whole and enjoy many stellar moments on it. Weird Prince is back and I love it; hope he keeps experimenting and putting new music out where he doesn't worry about flack from people who don't dig it. Keep taking chances, P! wink

...and I still stand by my first impression of Way Back Home--that it is Prince's most heartfelt and personal song in years...and it resonates deeply with me.

It really is, dadeepop. It will last the test of time IMO. I even sent it to a friend of mine who isn't even a Prince fan--I think it will speak to a lot of life issues she's going through. Just now bathing in the great sensual swimming pool of "Time"--so reminds me of The Family songs... music

Guess this album will be on repeat this evenng... cool P.S. Hope you get a chance to see him live soon--just saw him in March with my son in a small venue and he said he thought that was the best live concert he ever went to. High praise, indeed, from a 25 year old. wink

Never trust the initial hype from diehard Prince fans - that's the lesson I've learned. As someone who has been utterly bored by every pop release from Musicology up till now, I kept my expectations for AOA at a medium level. I was right to do so. It's nothing more than yet another forgettable batch of songs without wit, depth, or heart.

You've got all the usual culprits from that mainstream Prince mould of NPS/Rave/3121 type albums: the perfunctory R&B ballads, the desperate sounding hip-hop inspired tunes, and the plain, overly direct lyrics that demonstrate that Prince has forgotten how to write anything with clever metaphors, double entendres, or introspective clarity.

With the exception of the very fun and energetic The Gold Standard, I can barely recall any of these songs the moment they're done playing.

In a while, no one will remember a song like FunknRoll any more than they remember, say, Incense and Candles these days.

It's on the higher end of the newer Prince pop albums, but that's just because it's in such dire company.

Yes. Already now, not maybe after 18 months and then a cancel.

.

It has shitty packaging due to being a download, no booklet and no real info but it sounds great.

WHo else has this yet and can discouss and compare with AOA?

So, what's different from the original AOA? The sound? It must be a fan-tweaked version, if so...

I' ve never been more shocked by an album's beginning. First minute of AOC is the biggest crap he ever did. Euro dance lowest level. But then we get the sick stuff we all love him for. He still likes playing in the studio. Godd to hear that.

Biggest problem with the last albums (including plec) for me is: they sound better live. Not so AOA. That's mostly ultimate versions. Like in those good old days. Gold Standard ist a highlight definitely. And then again he seems to give it all away with those mid tempo tracks in the middle. Those are songs others could have done before the finale makes all good. This is not a consistant album. It has a flow that weakens in the middle. Mixed with the best ones from plec this could have been epic.

I agree with you 100% especially when you said "I can barely recall any of these songs the moment they're done playing". Not sure why he put out 2 spotty albums instead of one maybe decent one. I don't hear a single great tune on either one and I've played them over and over. PE has some of the worst songs (AINTTURNINROUND, BOYTROUBLE, TICTACTOE, STOPTHISTRAIN) he has ever put out. Great idea putting out a rock album but the results are rather disappointing. AOA is ok but opener Art Official Cage sounds like a Batman era reject. There are nods to the Prince of years past but that is not what I really want to hear. And the whole sci-fi thing going on just seems silly. And like in the 90s, rapping does not work on any of his songs. He used to be an original. Not sure what happened. I guess he raised the bar so high in the 80s & 90s that he will never be able to reach it again.

Breakdown is the only song on this album that feels underdone. I think it comes too early in the album, and I think it could have been a lot better had he not repeated so much or thrown in a key change somewhere. It feels like a nice first draft (in terms of songwriting, not production/arrangement).

Otherwise, everything seems fully realized. Even Time, which I don't particularly love, is highly original and well thought out. Breakfast can wait is not brilliant, but it's a cohesive pop idea with a clever punchline refrain.

And those are my least favorite of the bunch. The rest are a whole lot better. I have maintained that this material isn't head & shoulders above the rest of the past 10 years', but it's got just enough attention to detail to erase the album-ruining moments that we've had on every other album since god knows when. I'd say it's as consistent as Musicology, but it's so much more interesting.

per

This release is what I've been waiting for.Two releases;to say. Wow!!! Prince; is letting it be known; where the new school got it,s grooves from. Been a fan since 1977. Yes; Prince; has been out that long. With Andre Cymore; playing bass on that release. So, The PurpleFunk is back. It's always been there. The one thing, I can't stand these days; is the time limit. Songs are short. There used to be a time; when the main time was at least 7:00 mins for a cut. Like all the cuts on the new releases; one is funk and the other=rock. That's how it should be done. If it wasn't for Prince and Andre Cymore; there wouldn't be the crossover to heavymetal, new wave, gothic music, rock today. So, Art Official Age, is very important as well the rock c.d. released with it.
