Again, to me "Way Back Home" is the best track on AOA. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving "The Gold Standard" etc., but my gawd "Way Back Home" is SUCH a stand out. It's a perfect Prince song that has shell-shocked me like "If I Was Your Girlfriend" did. (Just an example.)
No doubt. Way Back Home is just a killer track. I've played about 10 times in a row. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent. |

I think I finally locked Down my favorite track...at least for the moment. Time. Its so subtle, yet out there. Immensely quiet while reservedly loud. Equally revealing and secretive. No more games with age...clearly addresses it and owns it. And all while literally phoning it in. Those bass licks own me and oddly a track named Time clocking in at almost 7 minutes has yet to be long enough. Those synth-horns come to early EVERY time. [Edited 9/27/14 0:03am]

I played the album on headphones last night thinking to go to sleep listening..(I don't mean that I was expecting to be bored, by the way) and was pretty blown away.
Unlike others, I'm not gonna track by track it although I had the usual misgivings about a first hearing album preview (in Wales they call it a 'leak')
Let's just say that there was soooooo much evidence that Prince's decision-making is back in SUPERIOR CLASS that I'm not going to deign to question it.
Won't be listening again til I have it in the physical as I have a deliberate and peculiar set up whereby my stereo doesn't accept auxiliary input, meaning that I cannot feed it digital files. So to listen other than on headphones or tinny speakers, I have to get the goods and in this case, it's vinyl for me, if it's available.
My overall comment is while listening that I got a similar 'future scenario', not just musically and conceptually but, somehow, visually...an aesthetic in other words, which is shared with that 'Destiny' theme song by Paul McCartney. In both cases, they have transmuted their usual tropes into something that sits in some future scenario.
Brilliant return!

I am so amped for this to drop on the 30th. Was a bit worried when funknroll dropped but since the release of the snippets from Germany I'm not afraid anymore. In a world of so much negativity and hate, Prince gives those who would like, a positive pill with this one. I am truly fortunate to be living in a time when someone like Prince is making music like AOA. Love it beyond words. Thank you for sharing and being the hard worker you are Prince.
Very Well said! Co-sign this. Listening to AOA makes me feel so much better and relieved in a way that he found his way home... even though i am not sure what "home" stands for here. Could be Warners, himself, God...? Only he knows. I am grateful that I am able to be part of this life-journey: 30 years and counting. |

I love how it's a completely unexpected turn and that he's trying new things with this record, while giving you bits of old school Prince so that you remember it's a Prince record after all. - ART OFFICIAL CAGE - Somewhat of an anomaly on this record. Sort of disco meets 90's house that turns into dubstep by the end. I like that it's adventurous and weird. The faux-operatic background vocals harken back to Get Loose from Crystal Ball. Also, I think that may be Josh doing the rap about upskirting the Statue Of Liberty. The way it starts reminds me of RuPaul's cover of "It's Raining Men." (7)
- CLOUDS - This track is dope. The End. (10)
- THE BREAKDOWN - I didn't like it as a single, but I like it in the context of the album. I also love the strings. I'm hearing the distortion some are talking about it, and I also hear it in the vocal tracks on The Gold Standard. (7)
- THE GOLD STANDARD - Early favorite. Total throwback to classic Prince/The Time, but tasteful and natural. I love the Tear The Roof Of The Sucka by way of Bob George intro, the synth bass that takes you back to Cool by the Time, the chickengrease guitar, the synths before the first verse that take you back to Vicki Waiting, the banter at the end. So much to love about this track. An upper echelon groove, no doubt. (10)
- U KNOW - This one is a grower and way better in headphones. There's a shuffling percussion sound that's super funky but you can't really hear it as well without headphones. (7)
- BREAKFAST CAN WAIT - I've liked this since it came out last year, and I think it's a great fit on this record. (10)
- THIS COULD BE US - I'm starting to really love this one. Future classic? The keys at the beginning remind me of the transition into Housequake from the SOTT film. It seems like he's dusting off some old synths on this record which is cool. "Sex with me ain't enought/That's why we got 2 do it metaphysically." I hope he's not referring to the pre-marital variety! <Clutches pearls> The way it ends is totally unpredictable, which is a classic Prince move. (10)
- WHAT IT FEELS LIKE - Kind of a Golden Parachute vibe, but infinitey more interesting, and also sexy as hell. Maybe the sexiest track on the record? Wasn't expecting to care about this one. (10)
- AFFIRMATION I & II - I like these odd little touches on a Prince record, but can also see people not being into them. Here, they work to perpetuate a concept, but not an overbearing one like on TRC. You could ignore this aspect of the record and still enjoy it.
- WAY BACK HOME - This is exactly the kind of thing I want to hear from Prince at this point in his life. Finally, some lyrics that are revealing, and honest, and that make you feel something. "Power 2 the ones who can raise a child like me." God, I just want to quote the whole thing. So many good lines. Unlike any other Prince song for sure. (10)
- FUNKNROLL - I love this one and I don't care if people think it's silly. Camille can pull it off. Also, after the first performance of this song leaked, I made the suggestion to put the breakdown at the beginning of the song. So, you're welcome. (10)
- TIME - Another one that didn't seem like much at first and then grew to be a favorite. I was expecting something different considering the length of it and its placement on the album, but once I got over that and gave it a chance, I found there is lots to enjoy about it. I love that goes on forever like they have all the time in the world. Probably intentional. And I love that it's deceptively funky up until the bass solo, where it gets outright funky. "I'm sick and tired of playing hard 2 get with an animal half my age," as Andy laughs. HOT. (10)
- AFFIRMATION III - Wonderful. The strings are divine, and I love Lianne's dialogue. It provides just enough meaning to the album without being too heavy-handed. (10)
If I were to write a review this would be it, this is great. I also love the bits of banter on Gold Standard and Time. I've always liked the little details he puts in like near the end of Time Andy sings 'this is what it feels like' and 'breaking you down' as if to reference those other songs she's on |

I'm not a huge fan of Rave, so I would say it's far better than that album. I feel 3121 is a very solid record and I like it a lot, but Art Official Age has much higher highs and its lows aren't as low in my opinion. It's also more cohesive than 3121. |

To save you both the agony of anticipation, he'll say it's slightly less embarrassing than the last one and call PLEL a steaming pile of horse manure, declaring Way Back Home "the least nauseating excuse for a song on AOA". Then he'll quote half his cool nephew's record collection and say Prince has not heard anything current in years.

each track just gets better, I keep hearing new sounds. Anyone who slags him off is TOTALLY missing the point. I don't give a damn if 'he has done these songs before' - this time he has delivered a cohesive album with a theme & it all fits well together. Even Breakfast...' which I did not like fits so well here. Likewise he actually sounds like he has put in the effort to 'make an album' rather than just a bunch of songs cobbled together. Also he actually sounds like he's got a sense of fun & adventure back & THAT is priceless...i feel like my old Prince is back! |

Any person or object whatsoever That requires your attention Is something that has veered from its path And preordained destiny of total enlightenment
I never wanted a typical life scripted role, huh...trophy wife All I ever wanted, to b left alone See my beds made up at night Cuz in my dreams I roam Just trying to find, trying to find My way back, back home
So many reasons why There's so many reasons why I don't belong here But now that I am I Without fear I am Gonna conquer with no fear Until I find my way back home Until I find my way back home Find my way back home
Most people in this world are born dead But I was born alive I was born with this dream With a dream outside my head That I could find my way back home My my way way back home
Is this the way?
Power to the ones, power to the ones who could raise a child like me The path was set But if u look the truth will set us free I've heard about those happy endings But it's still a mystery Lemme tell u about me I'm happiest when I can see My way back home Can u see my way back home Can u see my way back home |

Bobby g?:
This song about time
Say its about time
About time that u
R around
I think its 'bout time
That I got time
Alone with u
Alone with u
I think I'm running out of patience
I think I'm running out of lies
I think its 'bout time I tell the truth
Instead of these alibi's
Well...
I think its 'bout time
That I got time
Alone with u
Cuz ure so fine
When I get mine
Baby u can too
No more peace and quiet
I wonder why
A party full of drunken fools
I betcha some will b the rushing tide
Splashin all over u
I don't wanna work another day baby
No no stay with me
I wish u coulda stay with me
Stay with me
I don't think it matters anyway
It don't matter girl
For u I'm as rich as I could be
Baby baby
I think its 'bout time
That I got time
Alone with u
I know u know
Cuz ure so fine
When I get mine
Baby u can too
Sho 'nuff
Sugar well I'm thinking
That u really need 2 b my pet
And let me put u in my little cage
C'mon
Im sick and tired of playing hard to get
With an animal that's half my age
Sugar well well
My heads a little dizzy
My heads spinning 'round and 'round
Another dirty hotel room
Another lonely town
I need some time to rest?
I need some time with u
This is what it feels like
I know what I wanna do
This is what it feels like
Gonna lemme tell u one time
I think its 'bout time
That I got time
Alone with u
Cuz ure so fine
When I get mine
Baby u can too
Oh oh I think I need u 2 b my girl
Travel with me around the world
Baby baby
So no paper
This works out fine
But not half as fine
As when I get time
With u
Sugar have u heard
I think its 'bout time
That I got time
Alone with u
Cuz ure so fine
When I get mine
Baby u can too
Keep breakin u down.
Down down down
I think its 'bout time
That I got time
Alone with u
Cuz ure so fine
When I get mine
Baby u can too
U, u, u,u
Baby baby u can to!
Ooh ooh oh...

Much better than Rave. Similar to 3121 in terms of quality but IMO better, more consistent and thought provoking. Deliberate I would say. You can tell he took his time on this. Refined some things and cleaned it up... people have been critical of his recent collaborations with Josh but IMO I think there is evidence that they have gotten through to him that his days of doing one take and then just releasing material is over.
AOA is a strong record. Personally the only some I don't like is the first (you might like it) the rest is really good. I didn't like Breakdown or Breakfast Can Wait. But on this record and in this configuration they are outstanding. BCW follows U KNow brilliantly... just flows right into. And while Prince's grits and gravy line eggs and ham is not my favorite... the song works. The linn is great here. Just flows.
I loved LotusFlower (the single disc)... well I love AOA similarly even though its a completly different kind of record. You will enjoy this if you liked Rave and 3121...because this is much stronger IMO Dance... Let me see you dance |
