Sorry, I don't practice "patronizing bullshit"... never have. There is an equal chance that "Feeluuup" is either a new fan or a promotional plant... just being realistic, since the opinion that this album is "better" than albums that aren't even comparable doesn't make sense. They are completely different genres, with a heavy focus on musicianship on 'The Rainbow Children', 'Lotusflow3r', and 'N.E.W.S.', and crafting a cohesive pop/R&B album with 'Art Official Age'. There is no way one can say one is "better" than the other.

This makes no sense at all. Of course you can judge one over the other, regardless of style/genre.

.

Actually, I can't... or won't. As a musician, if someone were to ask me who is better between John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, I wouldn't be able to answer. Instead, I would descibe their styles independently.

.

Who's the better guitar player... Jeff Beck or Steve Vai? Neither. It's far better to appreciate the players' individual styles and methods, etc.

.

Same with albums... Which is "better"... 'Purple Rain' or 'Lovesexy'? Neither. They are both incredible albums on their own "mission".

That's exactly how I view things. Is TRC better than Lotusflower? They have different personalities. One may fit the listener better than the other but objectively better? That's not something I think about.

Nope. That's exactly the way it is for me. I have no time, need, nor desire to bullshit. Since you don't know me, I don't expect you to know this, but there are hundreds of pro audio folk, audio engineers, studios, and artists that know for a fact that I tell it like it is, or at least how I see it. My rep is strong in the industry.

AOA is his best album since... well...

In my opinion in the last 14 years.

It's better than:

The Rainbow Children

NEWS

MUSICOLOGY

3121

PLANET EARTH

PURPLE LOTUS/MPLS SOUND

20TEN

Dare I say it's his best since The Gold Experience...

Agreed.

This sounds like where he could/should have gone after TGE - it sounds contrived to say it, especially since he's also back at WB, but it's the truth.

I don't see it as copying dance trends anymore than PR was cashing in on Rock and Roll. ATWIAD was and is compared to the Beatles, etc etc. It seems a lot of fans main complaint is "I want Prince to invent a new genre".

Beyond excited about these albums now. I've been listening to them a number of times today. The music is fresh while retaining so much of what characterizes Prince as Prince.

So for those of you who have heard the entire album, how does it compare to the preview clips? From those, it sounds like there are four uptempo songs ('Art Official Cage', 'Clouds', 'The Gold Standard', and 'FunkNRoll') and the rest are slow jams.

Out of the remaining songs, all slow jams, it seems like I'm going to like 'The Breakdown' and 'UKnow' the most. From the previews, I don't know what all the hype is over 'This Could B Us' and 'Way Back Home'. I'll never like 'Breakfast Can Wait'. It's not uptempo nor slow jam... just too light and uninteresting for me personally.

oh come on. You know if you like something better than something else. Its not that difficult to form an opinion. Your statement makes it sound like you are unable to have a preference and all your decisions are based on facts without regards to any gut feeling or personal desires. You know you prefer some fruit over others, even if you cant compare their taste. Similarly, you know you prefer certain albums over others even if they are incompareable musically. Personal taste mate, thats all it is. I can categorically say that NEWS is not as good as Parade. Why? because I enjoy listening to Parade more... Much more. Isnt that what art is about? How it moves you, not how its structured?

I haven't listened to the "Plectrum Electrum" previews yet.

.

As for the "Fart Offical Age" previews, The first track, "Art Official Cage" sounds decent and the fourth track, "The Gold Standard" sounds great and sounds like it could be an actual jam. As for the rest of the album, it is a hot shitty sellout mess and for an album to have all those sellout tracks and only two jams on it, it's not worthy of my money and I won't be buying it. Next.....

That IS the point. Here's someone who probably hasn't listened to any new music in years, praising Prince's "exciting new music". When said "new music" is basically a pale imitation of years old trends. By your reasoning we should not object to someone claiming that Prince invented funk, just because that person has never heard of Sly or James Brown or George Clinton.

.

It's not about being pedantic, it's about opening your ears and exposing them to something beyond a steady diet of Prince and pop radio. Hell, judging from the reactions to AOA I'm wondering if people have heard Kanye's Yeezus, which isn't exactly an obscure record.

Yeah it's pedantic Bart. Have you ever been to a gym where some sixty year old guy starts talking about all the bands he's seen and the girl he was with? That's how you sound.

Just give your opinion without talking down to people and everything will be alright.

Bart's like Prince anti-Viagra! I know it's easy to say "just ignore him", but that's like saying to keep plugging away even when your Mom walks in on you in the bathroom late at night after you thought everone had gone to bed. Sounds easy, but never is...

Define sellout?

Prince has always been praised for his work with synths and keyboards. If there is even such a thing as selling out (in the music industry of all places) then Prince did that when he decided to "cross-over" with Purple Rain. Embracing the current music scene is not selling out. It's precisely how music has always worked. Artists take whats around them and use it.

I actually never listened to the clips, but I've had AOA on repeat all day at work. Yep, it's a good mix of uptempo, midtempo and slow jams. Breakfast Can Wait is definitely the weakest of the bunch. He could have left that off to be honest, but then again I want everything he records. This Could Be Us is at least more interesting, though. I really like Way Back Home. It just has a cool, yearning vibe. It's...different. And I think U Know and especially Time are bonafide Prince contemporary R&B songs. All-in-all I would say this is a Prince R&B album, if I had to generalize. I"m just very impressed with this effort. I haven't even listened to PE yet, if that tells you anything.
