What's with all the gun references? Ok, I found the gun reference in Fixurlifeup a little odd, not typical of Prince but at the same time not advocating or glamorizing guns. Then another one in Pretzelbodylogic. One that almost tries to use guns for a "cool" factor. Then, a third reference from the same era (this time from Prince's own song Clouds). I'm just wondering why there are so many at the same time? Fixurlifeup: Lookin’ at the world through the barrel of a gun Hands behind their back in a parked car Pretzelbodylogic: Taste the bitter sweet, undone Now we both too sleepy to get the gun Clouds: How do we engage?! Bullying just for fun, No wonder there's so many guns Maybe we're better off in space!

Is it an attempt to sound "edgy"? Or is it a true social commentary? Even if it's the latter, 3 references is a bit much (no telling if there are still more on the album).

I'd say its more of a statement on what he believes to be a culture with too many guns...if he's got that many references I guess he's really disturbed by it. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

also there's a 'Gun control' reference on the Controversy album cover. Prince 4Ever.

Or the gun in PR that his dad uses, Bob George and his 'it might be little but it's loud', or the gun that Papa uses to take aim and dies. They're horrible things, but really useful signifiers of power / violence / death that a writer in any art form can use - and I feel he uses the references well. If it's overuse then maybe it's getting towards cliche and lazy writing but I don't think so. I think if we put our heads together we'd find a lot more gun references in his songs, it's about how the references are used and what they add or detract to the work as a whole. Living in the UK I'm listening to an American using the references so have to take on face value as being a reflection and a comment on the context and the society from which it is being produced. I think the noise at the end of "Gotta Broken Heart Again" is him blowing his brains out. He acts that out as well while on show for "Dolphin". What?

I think the older gun references had a contextual sophistication that's lacking from the new references (3EG and AOA). Now he just drops the word gun probably just for completing his bad rhymes. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I've been a fan since 1982 (1999). I know there are a lot of gun references in his 36 years of releasing albums. . My question was why are there so many NOW? If you consider AOA and PE to be a somewhat joint release (with overlapping players, themes and even an overlapping song) then essentially you have 3 gun references in the same era. And also in 3 of the songs that were released first.
