What if...? Whitecaps What if Whitecaps is about all the people Prince has lost in his life? All of his family?
If I look at it that way, Whitecaps is extremely depressing...but the music is still kickass.
Sorta like he's adressing death..."For the life of me, I just can't recall. It's still a mystery. That's all. For dark gallows lead to brighter hopes...and masquerade." "Dark gallows" don't lead to brighter hopes at all, in my opinion. It might all be a "masquerade" to try and make yourself look strong to others afterwards.
He did lose his brother, I think within the last year.
The lyrics aren't so shallow, after all.
Peace

Lyrics are not 'deep' based on the surface subject matter. They are deep based on the insights gleaned from the subject matter and, to a lesser extent, the skill and beauty in which the matter is expressed. Since the latter point involves the 'eye' of the beholder, that aspect is up to the listener and their art appreciation skills. There is nothing particularly deep about this song. There are a million songs about the death of a loved one, (which this song may not even be) and they aren't necessarily deep.
Death is no more or less deep that a romantic breakup. It's a fact of life. What you LEARN from going through that experience can be deep if you are skilled in finding some 'deeper' meaning in normal, everyday life events.

To my ears, the lyrics of WHITECAPS are pretty good for a 14 year old girl, which isn't far off from who may have written them.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I enjoy the music and vibe, but the lyrics are straight-up dead grandma poetry. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

i have the same problem and from the snippets i'm hearing, it will be the same for all tracks that don't have prince on lead. so i think i will just take all those tracks off, add Screwdriver and call it an EP
