FunknRoll is Epic.
I've previously slated it after hearing it live. But this is a great little tune. The way the guitars seem to laugh the intro at you, instantly switching to a light and airy neptunes esque beat with Prince throwing out his best party catchphrases. Then off into a darker dance element. There are parts towards the end that call back to loose!/Get loose. Although not blatently.
I think it's great. But I don't think it works live. Or at least. I prefer the synths on the studio take to the horns on the live performances (that I've heard).

I was expecting Snoop Dogg to jump in somewhere. Love the guitar on my favorite parts (where the horns be at), and the soaring ending. What?

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it already, and im sory if they have, but... when this dropped over the PA before P came on stage at Roundhouse it sounded absolutely SICK. I'm a young dude at 24 and am very familiar with this "Club" sound and i'll be the first to tell you this sound is dated by at least 3 or 4 years by club standards, but it really doesnt matter. The track is BANGIN. The first half of the track has that miami bass feel and by the end, it blurs into a serious Pendulum vibe (big drum&bass act from the UK)... all dated sounds but this track really does have that unique Prince twist. I am a DJ and would never dream of dropping tracks that this song has obviously been influenced by, but this track as a stand alone tune is SLAMMING.
Just an opinion from somebody from the younger generation who is actively involved in the UK music/club scence.
Cheers. | |

When he get into those "I don't really care..." lines and the song takes off in a different direction then that scream! Perfection!!!
The 30th can't get here fast enough! When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

The second half of the song, when the beat kicks up is sweet... but I'm still meh on this. In part because I want to hear more of Prince... and there is little here where he comes through. It's like he handed over a song (or an idea for a song) to Josh and said "finish this." The way he used to have Keith KC Cohen do back in the 90s. Also, I'm not a fan of that bottle knock percussive sound... Beamers, Benz, or Bentleys did it better: https://www.youtube.com/w...TR7yvONCV8 "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

Yeah it does - probably just the way he sings it. In context of where Prince is at the moment it makes sense - Mothers Finest "Another Mother Further" is a rock/funk/metal hybrid from the 70's that I suspect has been an influence on Prince lately with stuff like Plectrum Electrum, which is where FUNKNROLL also appears. On a first listen I'd say it's a mess, a complete, total, unlistenable mess and I think Mr. Welton has a lot to do with it. It's rare that I think such a thing of a new track, I may like 'em more or less, but I don't recall thinking one was a mess since Purple & Gold. On the other hand, because it's so very messy, it's very possible that I somehow "missed" it. It may grow on me with time, or not, we'll c A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Finally getting to listen to it through my 800W sound system and I've got to say that I hope the CD "sounds" better than this youtube clip. It's so maxed out and compressed it hurts. I'm saying it, screw remastering the old albums, remaster the last 10, sonically they sound the worst... Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

Prince is finally doing something that sounds different, fresh and covers new ground (for him). It sounds great. It has that bit of passion. Not by the old paths, but the new ones...there lie the adventures.
But why no video clip to go with it? "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." - Carl Sagan

this song is not a mess .. it is what every prince song should be .. i won't be surprised if this charts moderately .. it blows crap like breakfast out of the water .. it blows most of his post wb work out of the water .. the only reason this is not a certifiable hit is .. the lyrics are too nice .. i really like this song the way i like some of his other positive upbeat tunes .. but the whole "lets funk n roll .. music good for the soul" bit .. which i personally like a lot .. is not what spoiled little pop shits listen to or buy .. sorry but its true .. the verses are the let down of the song .. same verses he puts in almost every single funk chant song he writes .. same delivery .. but the music behind it all is fantastic .. the chorus is great but too nice .. i love that there is so much more going on than just the typical boring funk groove he always plays .. this song reminds me of housequake in many good ways

Messy in what way? It's fairly stripped down for a dance track. Even managing to sound drum&bass like in parts. The guitars are crisp and sharp. The drums sound big. His vocals are clear.
Granted if dance music isn't your thing then fair play. It's unlikely you'd get much from it. But messy implies cluttered, too much going on - and that isn't the case at all.
For the first time in a long time I'd love to hear an extended version of this song where he gets REALLY messy.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I was just about to post the same thing...Not getting that this is messy. I usually DON'T like his dance trax, but this one gets me moving the second it starts. Fun and Funky! Can't wait to hear an extended version. Can't remember the last time I thought that with a Prince song.

Overproduced with no real song structure behind it or a hook to draw you in. Meaning just a collection of studio effects. Could you play this bastard on an acoustic guitar or a piano?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
err yea, am sure he played it acoustically in england at one of the small gigs in london. Might have been at that press conference at that singers house.
