wow I am a fan of Prince, and it has become so hard to defend him

Ok I am a fan since 83, back when Prince was a major force:

today, I am on facebook and here, and everything is fine.

However all the people I know in real life thinks Prince is a weirdo, a has-been.

Whenever I say Prince is still making music, he's a great musician, etc... then I am meeting SILENCE, or they are laughing. Isn't that called "indulgence" in english?

No one I know in real life would ever consider to buy a song by Prince.

Before you say, get some other friends.... I will defend them.. they are nice people.

But Prince is really out of touch with the general public, imo.

Shouldn't we be a bit "worried" about that: Prince's impact is gone, the impact on a broader audience.

I just wish Prince would have some success on the music scene again. Art Official Age, lets' hope for a minor success, right?

Then maybe it wouldn't be so hard to be a fan, maybe people would stop laughing at you, then.

What do you think?

er

When I tell someone I like Prince, I usually get two replies:"oh yeah, he's good" or "is he really that short?" So I don't really see what's the problem here.

Prince doesn't need defending.

His record speaks 4 itself. (pardon the pun)

Welcome to my world.... circa 1988!! biggrin It's always been that way. My cousin was a big Prince fan around the Dirty Mind days and he used to take so much shit from people over it. Here is the thing with Prince though that's always benn true. When he puts it all together and has a hit project those very same people will beat you to ticketmaster and buy up all the tickets! It was that way during the prince and Diamonds and Pearl days. Prince didn't put Tony M on the albums for Purple Rain fans, he did it to appeal to the fickle distracted masses and it worked, for a time, anyway. They didn't know Tony M from Chuck D, but the formula worked.

I get that response from real people (vs. online people) all the time - which is why I learned never mention Prince in the presence of real people.

But I don't think it's because his appeal has diminished, that he hasn't always been a weirdo, or that the success or failure of AOA has anything to do with it. He's always been a bit "underground" and "alternative," and definitely a weirdo, even at the height of his "popularity." He was famous and popular in the 80s because his talent could not be denied, while still alienating and even repulsing a lot of people. I remember seeing WDC video at a very young age and thinking he/it was all very gross, while being still strangely fascinated and entranced by it, I couldn't look away. But yeah, it was repugnant. When I got into him as a late teenager, it was when he performed in those butt-out lace pants, and the MNIP/Symbol album craziness - still repugnant, but at that age I wasn't afraid of it, in fact I thought it was hot!

So Prince is not for everybody, and he never was. It's just that a lot of people were "on the bandwagon" in the mid-80s because his talent willed himself into popular consciousness.

Even if AOA is a success, it will still be embarrassing to talk about him with most people I know.

You get some people who love him,and others that really don't. He does what he does and if people like it then fine,if they don't that's fine also. I've been slightly obsessed with Princes music since 1983,but for some reason I don't go round trumpeting how wonderful he is."I can't make you love me if you don't."

comes with the territory. it was that way even when he did still have some mojo 20 years ago. they'd like a song here and there, but he's an acquired taste.

also, Prince fans tend to be harcore and a little over-the-top in their dedication to his music. speaking personally, I know it can be a bit much to take when I go on one of my Prince jags.

I feel no need to defend Prince or any other artist I like. Most of my friends are Prince fans and those who are not know I don't care what their opinion is of him. I also don't feel the need to defend someone who both does not know me from Adam nor would defend me.

It's down to different tastes.

When people talk about defending Prince, I think they are simply defending the choice they have made to like his music and likely to justify having spent (in another person's eyes) a disproportionate amount of their life (time, money, etc.) on his music ... when they could really have been doing something more worthwhile.

I see no reason to measure what I like with other people's musical opinions. Other people like different things.

Similarly, I have no particular wish for Prince to be top of the charts. If people buy his music, then that's fine, but I often think that people want him to have anothetr hit because it helps them justify to themselves their conviction about his music.

"Look - he's a platinum download artist! Look at me! I have liked him since 'For You'. Boy, do I now feel good because I've been ridiculed trying to defend him for years but now everyone can see that I must have the best taste! His sales prove it!"'

I like certain foods. I don't force my favourite food down another's mouth, try to convince them that they are missing out because they have no taste for what I like, or defend my taste for certain foods - because my tastes are simply different. Different people like different things. Other than make a gentle suggestion occasionally, I'd prefer to find out what other people like and why, rather than bore them with my taste.

What do you think?

I don't know who your friends are but my guess is they're boring nobodies and u should make new friends.

.

Most of my friends are artists or people working one way or another in the cultural, artistic or media fields. Most of the others (those with a "normal" job) are proud hipsters.

.

Most of my friends think prince is cool. Not all of them like his music but most of them, if not all in fact, respect his achievements, think it's pretty cool when I tell them that he keeps doing stuff and usually enjoy his recent music when they happen to hear it at my crib.

.

So my guess is that your friends should go back to their insignificant lives, listening to ZZ Top and watching real TV, and u oughta meet new people who are a little more educated and open-minded, with whom you could proudly share your passion for prince lol lol lol

.

Besides, this sounds a lot like the "Prince is over and done" thread of the week and I'm not sure but I seem to remember it's not the first one you create? (my bad if it is)

I've understood that AOA will quite likely enter the Billboard TOP10 when it gets released. He could also get into just about any music show on TV if he just wanted to.

I think the need to "defend him" might have more to do with the experiences many of us have had as teenagers when our friends and family members weren't into him, disliked his appearance a great deal and so on. Still to this day I don't necessarily bring up how much I like his music in conversations, unless the person I'm with seems to know about good music (or have an understanding of what good music is generally like).

What do you think?

Why should "we" be worried? If Prince isn't worried about his impact on a broader audience or what others think of him, why should I? Making music is Prince's career, not mine, and shouldn't he be the one worried about the impact of his music and whether he's a success at it or not (and in my opinion, he is a success and has been for a long time)? It's obvious that the man has plenty of fans, or otherwise he wouldn't have sold a soldout arena at the Essence Fest this year, and other places he chooses to play. The music business is fickle, sometimes fans buys a lot, sometimes they don't, and I'm sure that Prince knows this well. So what if some don't like him nor his music, and don't get him or it? I've been a fan since the man came on the scene, and most I know have asked me "why do I like Prince and his music, and what do I see in both?" I've heard it all, that he's weird, egotistical, rude, cruel to his fans, etc. I have never let it stop me from being a Prince fan. I tell them, "I like whomever music and entertainer that I choose to like, because it's my choice, just like it's theirs, and no one has any say about it". Prince has made it this far in the business, so he's obviously doing something right. He and his music is loved by many and he's respected in the business. I've heard many other artists, including those from "today's musical world" asked what artist that they would love to work with, and 9 out of 10, the answer is "Prince" so obviously he's still very relevent and important to their world. I don't care if the man NEVER makes another album for the rest of his life, I will alway be a fan, and always love him for what he has already given me.....more than enough good music to last a lifetime!

Tomato...tamato..
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I'm 44. I'm past caring what people think of my musical choices. Infact i rarely discuss them at all. I don't get laughed at. I grew up, pay a mortgage, raise kids, discuss ISIS and Ebola right now. Prince's music is just not that important in the grand scheme of things.

Besides, weren't you loving 'Clouds' just a second ago? Do you worry if your friends don't dig the same brand of ice cream as you too? check your head. You've been around awhile on here, you come across as more whacked as time goes by.

If I ever need to defend Prince I just point out that his recorded output might not be to everyone's taste, but he's hands down the most talented performer I've ever had the honor to watch. No competition.

I think I will continue to do what I usually do, I will continue to "ignorre the ignorants"..... by "ignorants" I mean those who thinks Prince is "all over".

Meaning I will try not to care to much about what others (my friends) thinks about Prince & his "new music".

After all it's my own opinion about Prince & his music, that counts.....

People who laugh at you for liking something they don't are not "nice people".

You're entirely too old to still be in need of the approval of those around you to validate your choices on anything. Junior high school ended decades ago. Grow up.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
