What I think stands out about this funk classic from The Time is the drumming, especially the irregular high-hat rhythm. I don't know the "technical term" for how Jellybean plays it, except to say that I've never heard any drumming like that, before or since! It's so irregular, the song is hard to dance to until the drum machine claps come in.

Terry's bass playing is very funky, Jesse rips into nice guitar solo in the 2nd half of the song..

Of course, legend has it that this phone number was apparently Dez Dickerson's; if this were true, he of course would have had to change it not too long after this song came out.

In a catalogue of already strong material, this is 1 of the best Time songs.

Neither Jellybean or Terry Lewis even play on this track.

The only thing that isn't Prince on this track is
the vocals.

I think I can clearly hear Prince singing in the background of this track, just like in Get It Up. I could be wrong, though.

Oh, you can.
I meant to put 'lead vocals'.

dug the Bass Playing on this Song more than anything else.the Programmed Beats were tight as well.you can Hear Prince in the Background.Phone Number titles were in at the time of the Song coming out.Prince is cleaver with how He takes things in&uses them but still Sly enough to not be caught going after it.

i actually called that number from my cousins house. i was twelve at the time and a guy answered, of course i thought it was morris. i got so scared that i hung the phone up and we all started laughing. that's my favorite song by the time. i remember prince was playing during one of the glam slam la shows and he took sonny t's bass and started playing a few lines and i was in the front row going oh yeah that's my song and then prince stops and say's i just wanted to see if this thing works. it's like he knew we all wanted to hear that song and we were all pissed. but it was a good show anyway, of course.

what? about the phone call, well i remember to this day that hello sounded pretty scarry cause i had no idea at the time it was dez's real number. he said hi and i looked at my sister and cousin and said somebody answered. my eyes were as big as saucers. i think he might have heard us laughing. i do remember that the next time i went over my cousins house that number was disconnected. but you know what? i just realized it, right now that we didn't put in an area code. but that man that answered was pretty pissed to hear three little girls laughing when he said hello. God i was such a crazy little girl. but i had fun though, the same day we got busted for calling supermarkets and asking them if they had cabbagepatch dolls for sale. guess im telling my age huh.

Great song, But it is Prince, I read that jessie johnson said that he didn't play on the first 2 records, That when he met Morris the First Record was already completed and he just appeared on the Cover. That it was Prince and morris's voice dubbed over Prince's. But anyway, in concert the Time played it like it was written by them. Boy was it funky.
How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

didn't i say i was twelve and didn't i also say that we didn't put in an area code. i knew someone was gonna come on here with something negative to say. i was a kid playing on the phone and expressed what i thought was going on at the time. i just knew it was an angry man on the phone and he was probably pissed cause people were calling him cause he had the same number. sounds like your spitting venom too.

Even if u didnt put in a area code, there are propbably people in that area that had that number. I actually know someone in NY that has my phone number...but just a different area code. So anyone living in Clifton or Manhattan will have that problem.
