Sep 17th 2014 |
Australian publishing company Native Tongue have secured the publishing rights to Prince’s entire back catalogue under a new deal with NPG Publishing.Established by the funk icon, NPG’s catalogue includes Prince’s entire back catalogue and music from his upcoming album(s). The company was established earlier this year, marking the first time in two decades that the superstar’s publishing rights have been independently managed. Under the deal Native Tongue – who are celebrating their tenth anniversary this year – will control the catalogue in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. It includes songs like Kiss, Cream and U Got The Look. “It truly is an honour to represent such an iconic and musically amazing catalogue,” said Native Tongue General Manager Jamie Gough. “Prince has been a musical pioneer his entire career and to have his personal publishing company choose Native Tongue during such an exciting period is a real privilege.” As well as having local writers like Clairy Browne, Jon Toogood, The Amity Affliction and Wagons Native Tongue’s international roster includes music from Elvis Presely, Daft Punk, Lorde, Diplo, Tom Waits, Rodgers & Hammerstein and others.
Another MEGA deal 4 "The Kid"!! Just in time 4 his double releases..... [Edited 9/16/14 21:05pm] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

How does this work with the supposed WB remaster series? Off the table and done after the PR release? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

It's 2014 and you lot still don't know the difference between a song and a recording. . If you care about this kind of this, GOOGLE IT. Plenty of information about music publishing out there. © Bart Van Hemelen

Exactly. This happens every time something having to do with publishing comes up around here. This has nothing to do with record label deals or remasters. All this means is that Prince has chosen a company to administer the rights/royalties of his songs in those specific territories. In other words if an Australian artist wants to use a Prince sample or do a Prince cover Native Tongue will be the company they deal with for Prince to get his royalties.

. He has done so for decades. After his deal with Warner/Chappell Music ran out in the 1990s (after it was extended with three years as part of the 1992 $100 million contract -- see http://prince.org/wiki/1992_Contract), Prince signed a publishing deal with Universal. (Note that he went against the advice of his entourage which informed him W/C M had managed his catalogue really well.) . That deal was renewed in 2005, and he left that deal in 2012 -- see http://www.musicweek.com/...sal/049509 -- and started his own NPG Music Publishing in 2014 -- see http://www.hypebot.com/hy...shing.html . (I'm assuming Universal managed the publising until then.) © Bart Van Hemelen

question, -- why should we care about Prince's publishing rights? Prince 4Ever.

Don't bring NEGATIVITY & false hopes to this thread! This a BIG step in OWNERSHIP in 's massive career and catalog. He has worked DAMN hard to get to this point in his golden years!
Eye wish he could have kept the original name of his MEGA new album "Welcome 2 The Golden Years" Because he is DOING it BIG time now, with TOTAL control of his legacy. Don't hate! CONGRADULATE.
M.J. would be proud.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

really, why should I care about that "legacy", please explain...? Prince 4Ever.

They call it publising. Not publishing of whatever. But at least it is clear. P sold his rights to the highest bidder, not necessarily the party that will do the best job. Or will they? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

But MJ didn't have TOTAL control of his legacy like has now. SONY did & still does! They are pimping his fans, squeezing every dime they can get out of them.!.But Eye can say a lot more about that. But this thread is about 's control of the muziq industry & his MEGA multi million dollar publishing company.. [Edited 9/17/14 7:23am] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Because we've had this topic here several times over the years. So if you're a long time orger, you should already know the difference between a record contract and a publishing deal.

A publishing deal is not a record deal. Is that so hard to understand? [Edited 9/17/14 9:14am]

In real terms does this mean anything other than "Prince makes some more money on his legacy"?
His songs are (I'm sure often requested) but rarely used in films. The time he turned down Kevin Smith when he wanted to use TMBGITW springs to mind.
TV commercials maybe slightly more often - I can't really speak about Australia but I'm sure I've heard 'U got the look"... a few times in the UK. "Housequake" and LRC I think have also been used though I can't remember where.
Despite Native Tongue handling the admin side of things (sending Prince a cheque)... Presumably Prince still has the final say on how his music is used? So if say - Head & Shoulders shampoo decided they wanted to use "She's always in my hair" on a TV advert in Australia - Prince decides if they get to?
Or is it the case that Native Tongue are supposed to make it known they have Prince's back catalog for rent? and actively try to make as much money with those songs as they can?

For your information. I have been working in the entertainment industry since I was 12 years old! So I made a descent living off of it. Its nothing wrong with showing admiration, for a person that has been very successful @ it. Like and the beautiful Janet Jackson Also to use it as a blueprint.
I will continue to post about them FOREVER!!! U don't like it LEAVE & delete your account babynobody.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"!
