Let's face it: if it weren't for Prince, hardly anyone would know who Sheila Escovedo is (because she wouldn't be Sheila E.). It's largely because they want to read about her relationship with Prince that anyone is buying her book, at all. In other words, she's still making money off her association with him. Don't think she and/or her publicist don't know how that deck is stacked - and flogging it for all it's worth.
I would be willing to bet that, no matter what other stories are peddled, the real reason for her latest falling out with Prince is that she told him she was writing a book - and he cut her off then and there.
It it weren't for Prince, Shelia would have spent her whole career as a session musician. That was exactly what she was doing with Herbie Hancock & Lionel Ritchie before Prince enter her life.
^^I kinda get the feeling that she was happy just being a session musician.Just a few years after the Glamorous Life (and all the fame that came with it),she gave up her solo career to play drums for Prince. There's alot of pressure being the superstar up front, whereas being a session musician allows you to simply do your thing (in her case, play drums),get paid and go home |

Actually, in her book, she says that it was George Duke who first started calling her "E." She suggested to Prince that her stage name should be "Sheila E" based on that.
Sheila has worked with many musical legends since a very young age. It was Prince who encouraged her to go for a solo career. Obviously, that's how she's known outside of the percussion/Latin jazz world. She can't help it that in EVERY interview that is done, she gets asked about Prince. Everyone is talking about that because he is such an mystery. People want t know intimate things about him.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was interesting all around, not just the few Prince parts. I recommend reading it. The sexual abuse she went through as a child is heartbreaking. Her musical tenacity is inspiring and the love she has for her family is sweet.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince. |

Ace said: Sheila said in an interview that she went out and spent a whole lotta money because she thought everything would be payed for or was somehow free. She realized she owed a million and contacted P. He payed for everything.
In her book, she says she went to work for him to pay it off herself, but in the end the fact that she owed him money, yet he was her fiance, yet he was seeing other women (Cat?) all became too much to handle. I don't remember her writing that Prince released her from the debt, but it's hard to imagine she earned that much as his drummer to repay him. More than likely Prince took care of it, but if he did, I missed that part in the book.
I just read the book two days ago...she never wrote that Prince took care of the debt, she said that she had to continue on the rigorous grind in working to repay the debt.
Just for the record, the whole "Prince left me penniless" statement is ridiculous. She never implied that he put her in a position to be broke, what I interpreted her statement to be was that since she was under the same management as Prince (and to mention, dating and sleeping with him) that she felt that he should have "looked out" for her by giving her a heads up about contracts and such, however, she admitted that she signed her management contract without even reading it, nor did she have her lawyer read it as well, so it was all on her, which she took responsibility for. She did state that it was crazy how she ended up owing a million when Prince walked away from the tour with some major money. In my opinion, I feel like he had nothing to do with it, he set her up with the connection to his management and it was on her to take responsiblility from there. It's not that he couldn't have gone the extra mile to give her contract advice, which could had been nice, but he wasn't required to do so either.
