Why can't Prince write catchy, memorable melodies anymore??? There, I said it. The muse has seemingly departed. His latest sings are noodle-y, meandering sonic hiccups on search of anything interesting.

Out of curiousity, when was the last time you felt he had his mojo working?

I don't know why his melodies aren't catchy anymore, but they're still somewhat decent usually Maybe he's not trying to go for catchy songs? Maybe do, just not like did before

I guess it depends on what you consider catchy. I had Clouds and U Know stuck in my head after the first listen or two.. I'd consider that catchy. Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

Orgers can't come up with new topics for threads anymore either and it didn't take 30 plus years. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Lets Go Crazy Kiss Cream . Songs with catchy melodies which I dont really rate. . Catchy melodies isnt his problem. Its all-round writing a decent song that is.

I've been wondering the same thing. Of all the new tracks, the music is really good, but songwriting is so dull. I guess we can say Breakfast Can Wait has a catchy melody, but U Know and Clouds... I already forgot what they sound like. [Edited 9/9/14 1:48am]

The melodies might not have to be "catchy" (since overly catchy tunes often become annoying and tiresome), but they should at least be somewhat memorable and original. And Prince's melodies rarely are very memorable or original these days, regardless of whether they are judged against his own glorious past or a great deal of contemporary music. It's definitely one aspect of Prince's music that is lacking something today. Lazy songwriting? Lack of fresh input, influences, inspiration? Lack of critical viewpoints? No self-editing? Loss of capability or simply lack of motivation to come up with something truly creative melody-wise? P

I can agree to a point, while I like songs like Funknroll for what they are, spoken word songs I call them, I don't like them nearly as much as the melodic Prince tunes. Spoken word songs suc as Funknroll really do nothing for me, the song Now, being in the same category, is a much better song in my opinion.

I just thought of a few new titles off the top of my head and was able to sing them. My memory is fine. What?

Good point. I too was only thinking about how much I don't like the spoken word song type over the past couple of years. I HATE Breakfast Can Wait too.

I actually find Rock N Roll Love Affair catchy and memorable. I'll show myself out. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

He writes catchy, memorable melodies about as often as he writes catchy, memorable lyrics. Which is to say, almost never. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I don't think prince really cares that much these days. It seems that he records the first thing that comes to his mind without any editing process at all. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

And by memorable, some people mean "like those I remember from back in the days".
It's Memorable 2014 against "Classic Memorable". Notice how we're talking about our memories? Read any book on the effects of music on the brain, our long term memories of music, how deep they reach -- then listen to a brand new song from an artist for whom you may have 30 years old musical memories. Unfortunately, I found the melody (and lyrics) of Everybody Loves Me way, way too memorable. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Answer: 1) Wendy & Lisa 2) The 80's 3) He's more about grooves and jams now 4) How many catchy melodies can a guy write? Paul McCartney & Neil Finn are rare exceptions You're right, of course, he doesn't write good poppy melodies anymore

He's fallen into an odd trap where he's more focused a beat or a vibe rather than a melody. He's replaced a rhythmic vocal delivery with a catchy tune. Anyone know what I mean? There are catchy bits here and there, but there's more emphasis on the rhythm than the tune. (and I don't necessarily mean the beat when I say "rhythm).

I read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Repair" over the Summer. Oh my gosh, that book was so boring! I did make some hightlights though, and one in particular made me think of Prince and his lackluster releases the last several years.

You guys are BUGGIN. That man can write a fucking tune. Even Planet Earth had some gems (future baby momma, somewhere here on earth). Everything that has come out on AOA is dope to me. This is the first time I've been genuinely excited about a new P record. Bitch don't kill my vibe.

This is true. Prince has an idea and just bathically gotta say it as is, no editing, not catchy phrasing. The noodle, meadering description is good way to put it. Been disappointed since 1990 with George Michael as well.
