If I read correctly, actually nobody can quote here some instances of "catchy and memorable melodies".

In the 00's, I can quote a few ones that come straight to mind :

- LAST DECEMBER

- SHE LOVES ME FOR ME

- EVERYWHERE

- MUSICOLOGY

- CINAMMON GIRL

- LAY DOWN

- COMPASSION

- DREAMER

- NO MORE CANDY 4 U

- KEPT WOMAN

They seem maybe not as catchy and memorable than HIS STUFF FROM THE 80's, because they're not played on radio, tv, etc.

"Fallinlove2nite" and "Rock and Roll Love Affair" are catchy and memorable to my ears.

Good point. These absolutes that people keep saying is what makes this place so strange. Prince has written many "catchy" songs just in the last few years lol.

These are the only ones I can remember right off of the top of my head [& that's only because they were released as singles, & I would watch the videos]. To the rest of these, I'd have to hear them again to actually remember them [If I even want to go back & listen]. But any number of tracks from the 80's pops into my head on a daily basis [hate to say it lol ]. 1999 itself has more memorable tracks then any of the albums Prince has released in the 00's-10's combined [thus far], period. disbelief

There, I said it.

The muse has seemingly departed. His latest sings are noodle-y, meandering sonic hiccups on search of anything interesting.

Answer:

1) Wendy & Lisa

2) The 80's

3) He's more about grooves and jams now

4) How many catchy melodies can a guy write? Paul McCartney & Neil Finn are rare exceptions

You're right, of course, he doesn't write good poppy melodies anymore

I like the new tracks. But they follow today's definition of pop. The hooks are much shorter. There was a time for more substantive turns of phrase and melodies. It seems that time has passed. The new tracks do have Prince's signature, though.

'The Breakdown' does have a very beautiful, memorable melody. 'Clouds' is melodic also; I've been humming it for weeks.

'U Know' also has a nice hook.

Indeed. On some entertainment fan forums nowadays, a new track/ project considered lacking in merit compared to percieved earlier triumphs will invariably be described as 'the worst thing ever' and various other OTT phrases.

Unless one learns to think independently, these 'herd opinions' can distort one's view of a new song/ project and a more balanced (and probably more accurate) view of the new material is then lost or submerged in the sometimes aggressive avalanche of 'internet herd mentality'.

Not that this ever happens around here, of course wink .

The one thing Prince has never been short of is a melody. You might not like the delivery, but his melodies are spot on, and not just the obvious poppy ones.

Just listen to the structure of the verses in Beginning Endlessly, 4Ever, The Breakdown, Screwdriver.

  1. Ok great! I'm going to just look at this list of songs and see what I remember. I'm like a Prince music freak and I know the catchies of the catchies!!! Maybe these still will stand all time. I mean WOULD!! Haha

- LAST DECEMBER

Ok now!!! This song I believe was pretty! But OK, I'm a Prince music freak yes, but very interesting.....this song melody has faded from my mind! Funny, but I remember I really liked it, but due to the fact that it has dissapated from my recollection and doesn't stick as others, I would vote that this would not be catchy....sadly!!! sad

- SHE LOVES ME FOR ME

Don't even remember. Sad. Was something really clever going on here?

- EVERYWHERE

This song is NOWHERE in my mind. Prince sure does crank out the tunes doesn't he? Plenty of other ones I can at least recall, and then I can perhaps judge, but this one? No bells

- MUSICOLOGY

Ok now!!! This one in my opinion was THE THE THE best as the opening loop teaser on Prince's website in 2004 or whatever. Ya'll remember that????? Prince all teasin' with the record spinning and that bass loop!!!! I LOOOVED that loop. That is MY world as in, what I think catches somebody!!! Fonky!!! Did I say Fonky? Ok den, fur real!!! NOW, HOWEVER, the tune was released and Prince was kickin' straight fonky thru the first verse.....THEN DUM Dee DUM DUM....chorus!!! Is it any good? (so so so sorry, but no! He says, MUSICOLOGY, then repeats MUSICOLOGY, all in the same key as that funky James Brown loop i'm all talking about loving in the first place. But because the song does not change melodically ie go anywhere for the chorus, it becomes apparent to me that Prince is more about communicating the thoughts about BACK N DUH DAY type stuff and round fros and all that stanky fonk stuff Prince likes to roll out for all ya'll. Well, on the serious tip, the sound only offers that loop and doesn't hit a home run as for the rest of the song!!! So wishin' it could be catchy, because it still could be if he work on now! Come on Prince!!!

- CINAMMON GIRL

This one was bathically DULL-ish, I will say, when first heard, but it became apparent due to its simple structure that it actually fit HIT song criteria. I came to liiiiooove it?? Well I suppose I liked it a lot, but once I learned that the Neil Young song had the same title (but no other connection supposedly) I was like, DANG Cinnamon Girl phrase is supposed to be a fonky Prince made up phrase. It good. But a las, Prince sort of took it, and I'm not all for takin' even a title or a phrase. Come on Prince. You good at coming up with ya'll Starfish and Coffee type crazy so get on wit it!!! (BtW, so Purple Rain is a copied phrase....oh well, I guess I just gotta learn that nothing ain't no original idea huh!! Haha on myself!)

- LAY DOWN

What dis? Don't know

- COMPASSION

Was this a Truth track. Haha on me so crazy, and I call myself a Prince fan! Don't even remember this. I'll need to find it to see if it really indeed has a CRAZY catchy tune.

- DREAMER

What is this?

- NO MORE CANDY 4 U

OK!!!! Yeah, I thought this was goin' on!!! It was like CONTROVERSY era!!! Jack U Off or whatever. But alas, it has faded!!!! What was up wit it. I can remember Controversy/Dirty Mind songs/melodies much easier than what this was. BTW was this that Lotus Flower song!! I need to get off this computer and do some research to call myself a Prince fan.

- KEPT WOMAN

Lost again haha. What is this unbelievably catchy melodic song? Gotta go her it!!

This is an interesting thread!

Ya'll have a great day.

The 0(+> album, now that had some catchy tunes, The Morning Papers, Damn U, Sweet Baby, 7, Blue Light, And God Created Woman. Now to me, those are some great, catchy, melodic tunes. Would love to see him use this recipe more often.

The last irresitible hook? I'd say 7, or if you realllllly want to stretch it, Black Sweat.

I don't know if he's not interested anymore, or not capable. But that's what's kept all the recent albums from greatness

I'm going to say he had a stroke and is undergoing rehabilitation which is why people get so bent out of shape when we criticize him.

Either that or he is in hiding somewhere and an imposter is releasing music under his name.

..it's too sad to admit he has gone from such greatness to such lows.

Is it not possible your music tastes or needs have changed?

Maybe you've "learned and graduated" from Prince?

yeah people forget how it was in the 80's, how exciting...when a B-SIDE could generate as much or MORE interest than a single or album track. He hasn't written a decent SONG in years..years and years and years, I feel since 1988, a truly groundbreaking classic song.

Sure there are songs I enjoy and like and groove to..but nothing earth shattering or genius. I guess he had his moment and spent all his genius from 80-88. That's cool tho, we still have those songs...If people were truly honest, I think we would all agree its just not the same and hasnt been for a VERY long time...

I won't say that he can't write a catchy, memorable pop song. But, I will say that he hasn't done so in a long time.

About the only ones off the top of my head recently would be Chelsea Rogers, Dance 4 Me, and Cinamon Girl. But, being catchy doesn't mean it's good. lol

Ultimately, I don't need his music to be catchy so long as it's good.

Catchy and memorable are such subjective terms that I really can't say whether I'd even be talking abou the same thing as anyone else here. I agree that more tracks seem to be interested in simple, almost spoken, melodies, with just a brief melodic hook (if even that much), but I think he still can do a real and developed melody when he wants. But I'm never going to remember anything he does now as well as I do the mid-eighties stuff, because none of it's going to be playing for hours at a time. I don't listen to anything THAT much anymore, even the things I really love. As far as instantly memorable--some tracks are, some aren't, but if I'm going to recall something a few years from now, I'm going to have to listen to it a fair amount. My life doesn't allow for that anymore. I really love that St. Vincent album, but I've listened to it less than 10 times (and most of those were on a road trip across country and during long days riding back and forth through the mountains when I went with my in-laws to Yellowstone this summer). I've listened to it a couple of times since then. And that's something I think I really like.
