Nice, I didn't know the Diamonds and Pearls connection! He's kind of kept her in his heart through the years.

BTW, I can dig Mila's original, but I like Prince's U KNOW better, basically.

So I see the whole U Know project as a sweet team effort between the 2.

Aaliyah is named Zendaya but she has since dropped out of the movie..

Since I'm not a hip hop person, can somebody educate me? What's the difference between a sample and a remake? Maybe my ears are bad, but "U Know" sounds a lot more than just a sample. It seems like Prince didn't change anything and just sings over the track. Am I wrong on this. I still don't know how I feel about the song, but it seems that this is more of a remake than a sample. Am I wrong? What, if anything, does Prince change from the original other than removing her vocals? Somebody please advise. Thanks.

It's a better beat, with some extra keyboard stabs thrown in - but yeah, more than a sample.

Her math in that interview is a little funny - she couldn't have been more than 1 at the concert. Which, um...bad parenting!

He kept the groove, but added the percussive beat (that wasn't on the original track), backwards effects, and more keyboard stabs.

Usually with a remake, the entire song is involved, meaning all the lyrics, all the chord arrangements, etc. and re-singing it from scratch. If you're sampling, usually that means taking just a part of someone else's song and putting it directly in yours, whether it's looped over and over again or just appears occasionally throughout. In the case of "U Know", Prince sampled just the musical cadence of Mila J's song and looped it.

Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

Funny how she was surprised to hear the song on Soundcloud. I guess he didn't ask permission to use her song. Typical Purple Hypocrisy strikes again. "Wahhh, Chaka real mad, wahh, Sinead made a lot of money off my song, wahhh. You know what? Ima steal somebody else's shit! Yeah, that's the ticket". All that being said, I like the track. AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH, being a P fan will drive you crazy!! eek lol

he may of even totally re-created all the sounds from scratch (he can play piano yoo know!), which would mean he wouldn't have to pay sample fees. he would probably give her a writer credit though, so she would get paid thru that way.

The way it typically works is that the artist doesn't ask the other artist, they ask the record company (who usually owns it) to get sample clearance. It's pretty much his people talking to her people to work out the deal. When I sample I don't go to the artist, my lawyer goes to their people.

I swear sometimes you guys are looking for ways to hate.

I still can't get past the Auto Tune. It's like asking me to eat a Peanut Butter and Barbecue Pizza with Tuna and scrambled eggs on top.

I just can't get into Prince following a trend that horrible singers use to hide with.

Just can't do it bro.

Thanks everybody for responding to my question, especially with such specific information. I must listen to them again because while I think Prince's "U Know" is more musically full, I don't want to be like some of those mean Prince fans on another site that were insulting the original and celebrating Prince's version just because it is Prince. Her's had to have some merit if Prince decided to use it. I've listened to them since I read y'all's comments, but they still sound much alike. Mila J's is a bit more flat/sparce but still mostly the same song. Again, I'm leaning toward liking Prince's more, but I want to be sure why. Also, I don't know how I feel about Prince doing this at all. I'll admit that I am anti-covers of any kind. I just think that people should write their own songs or have songs written just for them. Still, two of my all-time favorite Prince songs are "Party Up" and "Colonized Mind," and we all know the backstory for both of them. Again, thanks y'all.

I pretty much feel the same way, but my wife kept reminding me that Prince is Pop artist and is free to make whatever creative choice he decides. While I don't care for it, it made me think that the original song used it so maybe that's why he used it. Guess I'm making excuses for his creative choices, I guess because I like the song but the damn auto tune just drives me nuts.

Easy on the cover hating, think of Jimi Hendrix with Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. Covers aren't always good but sometimes they're monumental.

I still can't get past the "uh huh". It's like when you're a kid and your Mom or Dad licks their thumb to get something off your face and you want to run.

I dont get people having an issue with autotune when Prince has been using Camile voice for over 25 years. Vocal effects are vocal effects. Itd be another issue if he couldnt sing and was using effects for anything other than stylistic purposes. I prefer he do this more than to ever ruin a song like he did the end of BCW.
Change it one more time..

I think of the Camille voice as more of an alter ego even though you're right, it's definitely a voice enhancement; sometimes even his Camille voice bothers me if it makes it harder for me to understand. I just don't like the sound of auto tune because of what I associate auto tune with - people who can't sing.

You took the words out of my mouth. The same people who have a problem with auto tune probably loving Zapp & Roger. It's just a damn effect, like reverb, distortion, etc. It's not like you don't know Prince can sing.

Also a little know secret- EVERYONE USES IT!

Yes, I can relent/agree that in rare cases that rare talents, like what you cite, have the ability to dissect, deconstruct, or rearrange a song in a way that shows listeners something that was not seen/heard in the original. It's just that, unfortunately, the vast majority of the time this is not the case. The monumental amount of terrible covers create such a mountain of poor execution that it's almost impossible to see beyond the mountain and notice the good.
