Part of me agrees with your position, but part of me also sees Auto Tune as nothing more than the type of voice enhancement that Prince has always done. Of course, I guess the basic difference is that Prince often used voice enhancement to create a different persona through creating a different vocal pitch, tone, or texture. That is--he was not using vocal enhancement to achieve notes that he could not achieve on his own. Yet, even with today's use of Auto Tunes--and correct me if I'm wrong--it is perceived/used as much for creating differing vocal tones and textures as it is for helping people achieve notes that they cannot accomplish naturally. So, even though I understand your point and did cringe when my ears first realized that he is using Auto Tunes, part of me equates it with Prince just over-producing another song or trying too hard to be current. Yet, like my position of covers/remakes, when so many people use Auto Tunes to hide their inept talent, I am tempted to wish that he would avoid using Auto Tunes so as not to get lumped into that inept pool.
