I find it funny that someone is complaining that people who show a dislike for U Know are dissing RnB and black music, whilst at the same time that person is dissing Whitecaps as Canadian Christian rock. Pot and Kettle? biggrin

.

I like Clouds and U Know. I do not like modern day RnB and probably never will.
I like Whitecaps. I do not like the Canadian Christian Rock and probably never will.
I cant stand FallinLove2Nite or The Human Body. I like EDM and probably always will.
I cant stand FixUrLifeUp. I like Rock music and probably always will.

Lol.........exactly..........so the main point of this thread is what exactly?

Different strokes for different folks.

Uh...ok. If you say so. It is a funk song with guitar riffs I think it fits nicely in funk/R&B.

The base line sure is funky. Its up there with "Solo". 😉

I love it when Prince rocks, there's nothing better than when he's wailing on his guitar but that doesn't mean I don't llke it when he does other things. The Beautiful Ones is my favourite P songs and Around The World In A Day is my favourite P album.

To be honest I'm not really certain what R&B is these days. Not sure it stands for Rhythym & Blues any more, from what I hear it tends to mostly be Repetitive & Bland. But I don't dismiss a genre completely, especially one that seems to not really very well defined.

To talk specifically about U Know and Clouds, I haven't heard them enough yet, I played U Know twice and Clouds once. I'm waiting for the album to arrive before I play them to death. That said, I hated U Know the first time but less the 2nd time and it seems it may be a grower based on a few forum posts. Clouds didn't stand out on first listen and I don't have a solid opinion one way or the other on that one, didn't hate it, which happens a lot with the first listen of Prince songs for me.

So, what is Prince R&B? Beautiful Loved & Blessed and Incense And Candles? I like the second but not the first.

What is Prince Rock? A Million Days and Fury? I like the second but not the first.

White Caps is not good.

It's almost as if I like a song that sounds good to my ears and not based on what genre it sits in.

RIP sad

Yeah...I hear u...But it seems like some folks have so much hate for modern R&B (there's some bullshit out there for sure...but everything shouldn't be painted by the same brush...) that they will give props to "Whitecaps" because it doesn't do that hippity hop thing......I've seen it on the Org and on Twitter... Also...ain't nothing "rock" about "Whitecaps"....

There is absolutely a large section of Prince's fanbase that prefers him to make rock rather than R&B. I've definitely noticed that to be true.

However, they'll tolerate R&B when it's in more of a "classic R&B" vein - ie, something steeped in pre-hip-hop styles. It's when Prince makes something in a contemporary R&B style that this contingency don't like it. You see it time and time again. I remember seeing it when "Black Sweat" dropped, and lo and behold, it crossed over more so than anything else Prince had done around that time frame.

I don't think this whole shpiel about so called "youngins" liking it because they lack perspective is correct, either. I think it's simply that the people who don't like it, largely don't listen to that type of music. So perhaps they are the ones who lack perspective.

I'd be interested to know if any of the people who don't like it had ever listened to Mila J before. Because I've been up on her for quite some time. Or, if they've ever heard anything by her sister, Jhene Aiko, who is incredibly popular right now. Or listened to a Drake record, or anything by The Weeknd.

These artists are all part of a new subgenre of R&B that's half-ironically known as "PBR&B" due to a large hipster fanbase. It's the current flavor of R&B that's popular right now. Interestingly, it's been described by African-American news website "The Grio" as
:

[A] lot of the production is echo-laden and lofty, often using a lot of synthesizers and filtered drums—sonically giving a nod to Prince's vintage '80s sound. Additionally, for the most part, it doesn't feel as if these artists are selling sex as their main entrée. Granted, they still sing about the topic, and in explicit detail, but it's in equal proportion to drugs, spirituality and personal philosophies. You don’t get that same diversity in subject matter from the majority of modern R&B singers.[15]

Now, you know damn well that a new flavor of R&B that's popping right now, isn't going to pass Prince by. My man stays on top of the changes in sounds. ESPECIALLY when it's a sound that's largely influenced by him in the first place.

So, this track is a nod to that. The same way "Black Sweat" was a nod to Timbaland and The Neptunes who had openly acknowledged that their sparse, drum-heavy grooves owed a debt to Prince as well.

It takes some people longer to get it than others. Some folks stay on top of the cutting edge of music and what's hot right now. Some people don't, so it's gonna sound foreign to them. But it'll grow on you, and in six months time the song will be viewed far more favourably by a lot of those people, and in a year's time, even more so.

I'm well versed in modern R&B, be it The Weeknd & The Dream, or FKA Twigs, or the Australian soul scene that's big right now. There is good "Black" music out there. BUT my problem is Prince seems to be making watered-down songs that copy watered-down songs that were INFLUENCED by Prince but were made by people who suck anyway. My perspective is if you're gonna copy what's "hot" right now (which is something Prince shouldn't be doing anyway!), copy something good.

Prince has always worn his influences/ inspirations on his sleeves. When the things that inspired him were inspired themselves he could make some great music. But I'm sorry, this stuff??!? No.

So do I.

If this were 1984, and someone played Pendulum and U Know (without identifying vocals) as music from the future, and asked me which I thought would be a Prince jam, I'd say Pendulum without hesitation. It's innovative and interesting - like Prince was.

Pendulum is OK but it's meandering, doesn't really go anywhere and relies more on dreamy sonic tricks and soundscapes rather than a strong hook or a strong melody. It's actually quite forgettable.

When it comes to progressive Brit R&B right now, I'd take AlunaGeorge over Twigs anyday.

Now there's a killer hook.

It's funny to me to read your review of Pendulum and think that you take issue that people don't care for certain Prince songs.

How incredibly reductive. I most certainly do not take issue with people not liking certain Prince songs.

If I had the time to search I'd give you examples of what I'm talking about. The overall general tone of this forum is if you don't like Prince's output of late then there is something wrong with you or you should leave.

I compared Pendulum to U Know. Not sure why you felt the need to bring a completely unrelated track into the discussion.
