this shit's like auditory nytol. zzz

Prince has sued fans, changed his name, and fucked people over. Or just fucked them wink

But his worse crime is constantly making boring new music. Absolutely shitty lyrics (This is the same man who wrote If I Was Your Girlfriend, Sign ''o'' The Times, Sometimes It Snows In April, Pop Life, The Cross, and She's Always In My Hair?)

The music itself is just... meh. I'm not excited for these 2 albums at all. But unlike other Prince fans i'm not bitter. Dude has 9 great albums, and 4 really good ones. That's a pretty good run.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

If the melody and chords were really cool, and you couldn't get it out of your head... I would have a different reaction.

Agree 100% with this. Resolution and Lion Of Judah are 2 my least favourite Prince songs, that 'uninteresting retro conventional' style is not my cup of tea at all. I've listened to Whitecaps twice and probably never again.

thank god for the following this fall:

reissue of Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of the Holy

reissue of Jimi Hendrix's Crash Landing and Rainbow Bridge

Bob Dylan's Complete Basement Tapes in the Bootleg Series

these will take the stink away from the excrement plopping on the world's lap on September 28

Ooh nice, thanks for the heads up on these, I don't really keep abreast of reissues so this is quite helpful. I have to ask though, why are they rereleasing those two Hendrix albums, Crash Landing was fucked around with by Allen Douglas, and Rainbow Bridge has long had all its tracks released elsewhere. Am I missing something, or are these releases utterly redundant?

On first impressions, I like this song. I like the sound, the atmosphere and Hannah's delivery. In my opinion this is not a song for Prince on vocals. Having said that, the song lacks some zest. I was waiting for a guitar or drum solo. Don't think I will skip this song on the album. I'll probably enjoy listening to it but I won't specifically seek it out. Not quite memorable enough for that.

Its a good song. I like it. Its pleasant. Im just a little confused why this song and U Know have been prereleased. Neither of them are single material and dont do much for selling the album(s) as a whole. Surely you release your strongest songs first to get a buzz going for the album? Thats how it used to work anyway. This song and U Know sound like album songs designed to break things up or bridge things together. Not filler, but not far off.

Single material has nothing to do with the type of song or genre. But singles do tend to be the most accessible songs on the album in order to appeal to the widest audience possible (just as RB was for ATWIAD). Do you really think Joe Public is going to pick up the new Prince and 3rdEyeGirl album based on Whitecaps and an unknown lead singer?

.

Im baffled. I just dont see why Prince/WB want to prerelease songs which are clearly album songs that should stay covered up until the album is out. It serves no purpose and just gives us another song we will have already heard before the album drops. Wouldnt you rather play the album for the first time having only heard one or two songs from it rather than 5 or 6?

I made a similar point

I challenge the people that like Whitecaps to listen to those lyrics and how clumsy they are delivered. She is literally tripping over the words because Prince doesn't know how to get around words rhyming and delivering a vocal rhythmically (this showed up early for him when he tried to rap but now its in most of his songs). She stumbles in this song just like he does in most of his new music. Like you said this is a man that wrote She's Always in my Hair.

It’s a stunning collapse. I do like Clouds and U Know... and it’s rare that I like his new music. I tried to listen to the Breakdown this morning and give it another try and couldn't do it. It sucks... and he’s singing like a wet cat. How many times has Prince done Breakdown? Good grief it’s just bad its like one of those Crystal Ball outakes. He has done this song already... move on.

probably because they don't see it the way you do at all

they want to release songs that will get air plays and Clouds and U Know give him the best chance. Sorry they don't want to release Cream or Pink Cashmere eek

Agree 100% with this. Resolution and Lion Of Judah are 2 my least favourite Prince songs, that 'uninteresting retro conventional' style is not my cup of tea at all. I've listened to Whitecaps twice and probably never again.

He has done similar ideas of normal rock songs but made them interesting like "Dolphin" or even given the cliche Prince production to "Raspberry Beret" (you know, the drum machine hand claps sound up front and loud). He's also done interesting things like "What's My Name" and the uniquely arranged "Splash". Shit, even "Alexa De Paris" and "Planet Earth" (the song) is elevated by interesting creativity. Or he's made standard songs catchy like "Guitar" or "Peach". I actually quite like "FunkNRoll" as we've heard it played on radio and live on a talkshow. That one is catchy and the changes are cool and funny (in a music genre humor kind of way)

But this song seems very dull, both lyrics, melody, arrangement, performance, etc. It doesn't seem paticularly beautiful or emotional either. Maybe it will pop in context of the album sequence.
