And another thing, what is up with Prince and autotune?

For someone that loves to talk about "real music by real musicians", shouldn't real singers that can really sing, SING? He is still a real singer, isn't he? confuse

Maybe the fact that he does say these things, can definitely sing, etc. should alert you that he's doing it for a reason? He's the composer -- he can play drums but he uses drum machines too -- OMG? Does not compute?

No, it actually doesn't compute because for someone that can do it all and quite well, his leading by example would be more conducive than following the trends. Well, I think so anyway. shrug

How about he only has a problem if people are dependent on the tricks?

It's like the math teacher told a bunch of 7 years old that no, they can't use calculators yet but she can because she already knows how t do it long hand?

Oh.. Just buy Plectrum instead of AOA if you don't get it. Oh wait...

Electric guitars used to be trendy. Pedals used to b trendy. Vox effects used to b trendy. Drum machines used to be trendy. Synths used to b trendy...

Newer tech is always trendy till its a staple.

Not to equate the song to Dylan or a rolling stone...but he got lambasted when he... OMG...used an electric guitar.

Its better to learn how to incorporate a tool than to just outright eliminate it. Why? Cuz it helps others do things they can't do naturally? It can help u do things you can't do naturally as well.

The auto tunes don't carry his vox thru the song. They simply add flourishes and small elements. The chorus proceeds unimpeded by vox effects. The fx happen over courses of seconds in verses. I don't even think it's auto tune. I think it's a pro tools effect of some kind.

I would exhaustively contend that Prince has been dependent on "the tricks" for quite some time now...from the Never-Going-To-Play-His-Hits-Again "Hit & Run" tours, the bundling of the "Musicology" CD with sales to the concert, planting "Planet Earth" in the UK newspapers, the $75.00 LotusFlow3r website, the I-forget-how-much-it-cost Opus, etc., etc. But I happen to know based purely on my own personal experience that the purple haze only lifts...when you eventually and evidently...see through it, all on your own. shrug

It's comments like this that make me wonder if there is a comprehension problem on this site.

Nobody is asking that Prince retread anything. All folks want is good music.

This U Know abortion-of-a-song ain't it.

...and I think he has produced good music here. Ever heard of "Eye of the Beholder"? Beauty is what we individually see. Blanket comments like this are sometimes what's realy wrong with this site...

[Edited 9/1/14 22:02pm]

And had he just said that, I wouldn't have posted my response.

This was in regards to his assinine assumption that those who don't like

the song want Prince retread material--I was not responding to the fact

that the person actually liked the song.

People are free to like the song all they want. Britney Spears has

millions of fans afterall. shrug

We're talking about musical technology, not a laundry list of all your disappointments.

We all know these things and I exiled myself from the Org for a number of years because "this could not be so I'm not playin" and stopped buying everything for a while. You should do the same in protest, as much as we would miss you.wink

I actually enjoyed the H&R tours, also Musicology - CD and concerts, so that's not "a laundry list of all my disappointments". So you can exile yourself again if you like but I'm not going anywhere because you don't like what I say.
I was just pointing out that he, himself has been "dependent on the tricks". And tricks are tricks, whether they're through technology or old fashioned slight-of-hand. So he should have a problem with himself, if it's as you said, "How about he only has a problem if people are dependent on the tricks?"

Now the big question for me is will P sing this song live? And how will it sound?

We're probably in a minority here, Kcool, but I love the sampler set and think fits perfectly the updatet sound on U Know. I wouldn't mind a sampler tour, actually. Just Prince, the sampler and any other instruments he chooses to add and play himself. He could trigger a beat and improvise on top of it on guitar, bass, drums or whatever.

Eye LOVE the sampler set also! Eye don't understand why no one likes it here. It features rare instrumental versions of his classic MEGA hits, with an added instrument here & there. Plus prince's flawless vocals. WHO could not like that? But the fairweathers.... rolleyes

i like the sampler set a lot. i mean, how cool was that version of "hot thing"? i think the gripe

most people have with the sampler set is that it is mostly just partial songs so it's almost just

another medley, which people seem to dislike a lot. i know for me personally, i would love to

hear some of those songs in their entirety. whenever he slips an (almost) complete rendition

of a song into the sampler set, it just takes it to a very magical level.

/

but whatever, the sampler set is cool. i also love how it fits into the 3EG shows especially, as

most of those shows are very heavy on guitar and the sampler set is just a nice break from

that with all those programmed drums and triggered samples.
