Prince is not one to follow trends, he makes them. Wasn't it said that they wanted him to be included in the "We Are The World" recording with all the other celebs, and as we all know, there was no Prince. I don't think that he will jump on the bandwagon just because everyone else is.

Picture him standing next to 3rdeyegirl with a lollipop in his mouth watching the girls throw buckets of ice water on their heads.

Charity is a great thing. Gimmicks and trendy things to attract attention are fine...but this one is pretty stupid. People should be willing to give to charity without dumping Ice on someone. I do like the idea of famous people calling out others, but Prince obviously is not the best choice for something like this.

One reason Ice dumping so pretty stupid, is even though it is fairly harmless, it's something for people under 45. Older people are prone to pneumonia. George Michael is 51, and nobody dumped ice on him, and he nearly died from pneumonia, and despite the rumors, he has no confirmed illness that led to the pneumonia.

Just google George Allen, former NFL football coach, who was met with a shower of gatorade in a game where the temperature was in the 50's. Not freezing mind you, but he was old. He died two months later.

What does all this mean? Not much, really. Just a point of view. People should be willing to give what they can to help humanity. And if it takes some gimmick or promotion to inspire people, it should be one that is healthy.

Eh? You were right when you said it is "fairly harmless", because it is. It would be a bit different if you were submerged in ice-cold water as you would quickly get hypothermia, but getting briefly splashed with cold water? Won't do anything more than give you a mild shock and be uncomfortable for a few minutes.

Bizarrely, however, you then go on to link it to serious (and completly unrelated!) illness! Pnuemonia has NOTHING to do with temperature. It is caused by bacteria or viruses. That's it. Getting cold does not give you pneumonia. Your comment about George Michael makes no sense - he got pneumonia and nobody dumped any ice on him - so, erm, how on earth is this in any way related to the discussion? GM got pneumonia - that is it.

George Allen died from a form of cardiac arrest. He had a history of heart arrythmia. There is no evidence that the Gatorade incident was in any way linked (except for an entirely anecdotal comment that Allen said he had felt unwell since the event, which is likely coincidental). His son also dismisses any connection.

Let's keep everything in perspective, shall we? This is hardly the most dangerous thing someone could do to raise money. People do far riskier things to raise as much money as they can for a cause. I think you are making a mountain out of a mole-hill here.

A very slight connection:

In the "Prince - A Musical Portrait" video from 1989, Randy Newman is comparing the success of Def Leppard to the success of Prince..: "He's not selling records like say Def Leppard..." (something like that, I don't remember the whole thing he said)..

KISS? I can only see the connection in 1 of the most popular & successful singles by Prince is.. Kiss.

That's funny then that they would call him out, since there is really no personal connection to him.

Obama was nominated and won't do it either. They both have a little more class than that. If he wants to, he'll give a montary contribution, as Obama did, but ain't nobody throwing no ice water on His Royal Badness, forget that!

The level of class of a guy who runs around in high heels and a thong singing about pussy is quite different than the President.

Def Leppard just nominated him too, at a recent Kiss concert. I about fell out of my chair laughing when I heard that. It was so random, I didn't know they were fans.

It's not supposed to be funny, just raising awareness for ALS and raising big bucks, these rock stars wouldn't be throwing $10,000 at a time at it were it not for ice bucket challenge.

OK....for the record...water does not spoil an afro. I'm sure it gets wet in the shower regularly and or washed regularly. Afros aren't extra hydrophobic re: other kinds of hair and styles. The worried prince would be the permed prince.

In accepting the challenge, one could dump icewater over their head or make a cash payment. I could see Prince doing the latter on a good day.

That said, Prince has never impressed me as one who is conspicuously philanthropic. My guess is he already gives to several causes -- and he may or may not add ALS research to that mix -- without much fanfare.

Isn't Prince into animal rights? Because the organization that gets the donations tests on animals - more specifically, primates. Very inhumane.

I couldn't see Prince supporting that, personally.

as well as ALS being controlled successfully with diet and that all the money goes to the ceo of the charity and not where people think it is going .. would be nice to think prince knows all this and won't be dumb like america .. animal testing does not work and its cruel
