What is the New Power?
I never really looked into what this is or what it sounds like before but during one of the Lovesexy aftershows, Prince says something to the affect of "use a new power beat" and Sheila E begins on the drums for the song Rave I think it's definately a different feel from most Prince music drumming During the Lovesexy era we hear the beginning of 'New Power' 'Power Soul' -Batdance 'We've Got the Power' -outtake and such, then early 1990s Prince's band is dubbed the New Power Generation NPG. The drumming is a lot harder, harder beats at times, definately a different sound from the linn drums, and diverse yet simple beats of songs like 777-9311 Let's Work Lady Cab Driver Let's Go Crazy Forever In My Life, Housequake later in 1998 he comes out with a song/album called New Power Soul It seems after the Lovesymbol/Come era and maybe till the Gold Experience the band had a particular feel/sound but after that band the 'NPG' members were playing something different. . Ok question being asked as simply as I can. What is the New Power sound, what defines the New Power Generations direction etc?

New Power is a theme just like the REvolution, Family, Vanity. The Revolution was a group that all contributed to the rise of Prince. You cannot have REvolution without a group. A revolution of one goes nowhere. The Family again was a family and Vanity was mostly about appearance. The time is a bit of a stretch, it may refer the rythmic aspects or it may be a more vague relation.
What is clear is that after revolution comes power, new power. Clearly after the revolution pushed prince to the top, he gained power and no longer needed them. The New Power is Prince. It's all about Prince being the only power source for his music. By lovesexy he had ditched his band and became in complete control of his own presence and ability to make music. Completely self reliant or perhaps a better word would be self obsessed. Either way, it was about prince being in power over his own realm. Gone were all the friends and relations that helped him into position. It was all new people. No one to threaten his judgement. No one to tell prince he had a bad idea. Everyone doing everything prince way or the highway.
Ultimately it was his quest for power that was his own demise. Discarding all that WB had done. Handing him a contract when he was 18 and by 'for you' standards, NOT a very good songwriter. Yet Prince was about PRince and now about being part of a great musical community trying to create art. His fight with wb completely decimated his career. It is only because of the heights he achieved with WB and REv, that he even has a career now at all.
Prince held onto that stupid NPG moniker for decades even when it meant nothing .. even tho it was much like the KIng of Pop still going by that moniker when he clearly was no longer on top. For prince NEW POWER meant he was the king of his world, he had acheived some supposed status greater than his pears and was completely in control of his world. And perhaps he still is. He is a lonely dictator with no peers only 'proteges' of who's flowers he often picks.
New Power represents a hollow accomplishment that prince still cherishes as tho it in itself is greater than his accomplishements he achieved with his group or family or whatever you call the wb years. Paisley Park is such a departure in theme from the NPG concept. Paisley Park is about community and beauty and sharing, New Power is about control and status.
NEW POWER still represents Prince. He is a different person now. Prince et morte. True story. Prince is now king on a lonely island of slaves. What a bore, but he has power, power he did not have before.
I don't think NEW POWER has anything to do with a type of music, just an attitude toward playing music. Prince discarded his family. Sheila E stepped up and was part of the New Power restructuring. NPG exodus days were again a flexing of prince new power.
While the first NPG was quite a group, clearly since he throws that NPG moniker all over every incarnation and even a completely solo album, it has nothing to do with the band.
That's my take. If you don't believe me .. just ask spooky and all that he crawls for ... [Edited 7/3/14 12:16pm]

It's a power that has replaced another power that was previously in place. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

We Got The Power is an unreleased track recorded on 15 October, 1988 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during a day of on the Lovesexy Tour, between shows in Atlanta, GA and Greensboro, NC). The song contains a robotic-sounding countdown that was later used on Live 4 Love (and was used as an intro to Controversy on the Lovesexy Tour a week after We Got The Power was recorded). It was included on a 27 October, 1988, configuration of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic, but was not included on the late 1988 / early 1989 configuration. It was briefly considered for use on the Batman album, and was used in the background of an early unreleased trailer for the Batman movie. The chant of "hey, we got the power, oh, we got the soul, hey we got the sho'nuff get off to make the devil go go" was used in Batdance. Similarly, the chant "hey, we got the power, oh, we got the soul" was used in Carmen Electra's Power From Above. The track mentions some of Prince's band members from the time; "Junior" (Levi Seacer, Jr.) and "Doctor" (Dr. Fink), and mentions "an angel" for a drummer (Sheila E.'s name in the original Graffiti Bridge movie script was "Angel"), which may be a reason the track wasn't used once the group disbanded. Additionally, Prince refers to the unreleased track The Grand Progression by asking "is the progression grand?" (he refers to The Grand Progression similarly in F.U.N.K.). The track remains unreleased. -PrinceVault . Launch procedure commence

To me, it's nothing more than branding. New Power Soup sounded no different to me than any number of b-sides he would have never put on an album during the 80s. มีเพียงความว่างเปล่า 只有空虚 Dim ond gwacter 만 공허함이있다 唯一の虚しさがあります There is only the void.

Yeah I think he had some kind of concept late 1988-1989/90 but once the Lovesexy band disbanded there was no continuance in whatever it was to be

I really liked your post (Trevor's) responding to the questioning of what New Power is. I followed what you said and feel there is truth to it. I just can't say how much because I just don't know Prince personally to understand his direction. I loved it when "New Power Soul" only existed as a cute logo on the lovesexy sleeve. And it probably was a phrase that suddenly popped in his head when rushing the Lovesexy album together after the Black Album.
Alphabet St. sounds like it to me. Meaning that I think Prince writes great stuff when under a kind of pressure like after an unwanted project, the Black album. Then he liked it and it bubbled to the top as a phrase that appealed to him and he named his band, etc. after it.
So here's Prince with all this "jams" and funky riffs etc bubbling along. Oh, I'll say this is my new album! Release it in 2 weeks. Wait wait wait, I'm just gonna go back to basics and throw in the project a "killer" song. Thus Alphabet St. just appeared and his brain raced and in the I won't say "jibberish" but funky phrasing, he thought of New Power Soul because of ushering in the rap of Cat.
Thoughts guys just thoughts.

Housequake is not a simple beat. It's a tricky beat (at least on the studio version). The kick drum pattern is offset from the stadium triple stomp pattern. Most people don't process that. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Sorry I don't mean simple as in easy. Like the other examples I used, their constant throught the song, they don't change, there isn't a lot of craziness going on.

Cat, we need U 2 rap . lol forget that line in Alphabet St
almost like he's talking about or introducing 2 concepts:Lovesexy & New Power Soul It's weird but I never registered New Power Soul back in 1988, I think I was too focused on what is Lovesexy

I wish I could find a picture of the Lovesexy poster that was hanging on the front door of the Uptown NPG Store. I'm pretty sure it was a one-of-a-kind, as I've never seen it anywhere else. There were no pictures on it that I can remember, only illustration and text in the Lovesexy font that contained a much longer definition of the Lovesexy concept than just "the feeling U get when U fall in love...etc." The only details I remember are that he felt "trapped" by it (Lovesexy), and it ended with something to the effect of '4 those who don't this feeling - I feel 4 U.' "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I need to scan thru my stash of Lovesexy stuff
I always wonder why he never really performance anything from this album. I mean with all this New Power and Girl Power and We Got the Power, it's just a mystery why he never touches the music

maybe because the album is one very long song, there are fewer times available to perform the whole lovesexy album?..........................................................i wondered if new power had any connection with an evolution of james brown's soul power......................................i like how the npg is always evolving with New, fresh members.............................................was power fantastic at all related to new power?...................................................to me, its about awakening a power N U...................................and i like the word generation -- reminds me of some everevolving allspark, like prince, always dynamically evolving ahead of the current times..................................................i agree about npg sound being more totally conducted by prince, and i think its a really interesting direction to take, look forward to hearing it grow! flowing through the veins of the tree of life...purplemaplesyrup

'You're a wee bit apprehensive'
I don't have the song to play back and confirm that lyric, but isn't that a bit Scottish? Do americans use the word 'wee'? "I'm much too hot to be cool"

Power From Above is an unreleased song recorded on 26 August, 1991 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (the day before the release of the album Martika's Kitchen) for Carmen Electra's first album, which was planned to be called On Top. It was included as the first track on a configuration compiled on 15 June, 1992. The track was credited as written by Prince, Karen "K-Dean" Cover and Chris Tyler on the credits printed for this configuration of the album. The song was ultimately rejected from the album, however, and the album was renamed Carmen Electra. Prince plays most of the instruments and can be heard reciting a few lines in the same voice as on Black M.F. In The House (although the use there was not a sample from this song). The song reuses the phrasing "Hey, we got the power, oh, we got the soul" previously used in both We Got The Power and Batdance. One version of the song also contains a repeated spoken sample of "We will not give up the fight". A repeated phrase of "What are you thinking of, you need the power from above" is sung by Patti LaBelle.
