I now would quite like to hear it, which sadly is an impossibility. Does anyone have a list of all these non-album (or digital only in the case of The Morning After) tracks? I'd like to start tracking them down.

This is true, I had completely forgotten that you were the dissenting opinion in the review of that song, my apologies, I shall give it a listen.

Thanks for the heads up bigd74, got it now. Yeah, everyone's right, Purple And Gold is pretty fucking awful. Goodness knows I can be more forgiving of Prince's bad stuff than I perhaps should be (imo Newpower Soul isn't really bad at all, just depressingly mediocre) but this is quite painful to listen to.

This song is designed to satisy a very specific purpose, and not designed to be a top 40 hit, so yes, it sounds very different, especially if listened to without that concept in mind. Personally I feel it's a creative song and fits the viking/marching into battle/victory/comradery theme perfectly, which is what it was designed to accomplish.

I've not watched much American football, but I'm assuming that at the start of a game the teams skip around the perimeter of the field in ballet tutus, aiming to intimidate their opponents with a display of airy effeminateness, right? In that case, it's the perfect musical accompaniment.
