Purple and Gold revisited In honor of the start of football season, I think it's only appropriate to visit this non-masterpiece.
I love Prince... however... HOWEVER...
This song BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!

If I was the Vikings, I would have banned him from the stadium and stripped him of his fanhood!
Seriously.
The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I normally appreciate it when Prince steps out of his comfort zone and delivers something unexpected, even if it doesn't work.
But this... this... | |

This song is almost unprecedented in the realm of pure suckery.

What makes you think he's a fan? This could have been him trolling...

I must confess that I have never heard it, perhaps thankfully given its reputation. There's a lot of these 2000 era weird outliers that I've never actually heard, due to them being only released on the radio, or stuff like The Morning After, which again due to its reputation it doesn't seem like I'm missing out :) Are any of these actually worthy listening to? Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

I love this song. Yes l love. It reminds me of the Revolution. I just wish he had thrown a guitar solo on the end of this bad boy. Come on I can't be the only one? Can I? 1980-Present

I seen this video, and it was so god-awful...my sides hurt from laughing so hard. lol, it was as bad as Ashley Simpson singing live during the Orange Bowl halftime.

No... it's even worse than Jughead and Graffiti Bridge (the song)... Prince 4Ever.

It's the best team song I know. It's the only team song I know. Go 49ers! Hi, Colin. What?

I also like it when he goes outside of his comfort zone but hell, that was was an absolute disaster. I understand what he was trying to do but it's just absurd... A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

The Morning After was a great song. A bit too short, but it should've been on the physical release of LF as well. It's no super masterpiece, but probably better or as good as 4ever Feel Good/Wonderful etc, and Money

Fair enough, I think the negative impression was due to Peach and Black podcast slaming it and my taking their opinion as the general fan consensus. I now would quite like to hear it, which sadly is an impossibility. Does anyone have a list of all these non-album (or digital only in the case of The Morning After) tracks? I'd like to start tracking them down. Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

It is what it is, it can't be forgotten now that it's out of the bag. If it's true that there's no such thing as bad publicity, then it was a "hit" "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I know little about American football. Is this song played before games at their stadium? It actually sounds a little better than I remembered.

Pretty sure I said it was one of the best tracks on the album .... Better than Colonized Mind even... Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

I agree. Terrible... this song is a catastrophe no less.. Prince 4Ever.

I heard this song and my thought was the worst part about the song is Prince intended purpose for it. SMH

This is true, I had completely forgotten that you were the dissenting opinion in the review of that song, my apologies, I shall give it a listen.
Thanks for the heads up bigd74, got it now. Yeah, everyone's right, Purple And Gold is pretty fucking awful. Goodness knows I can be more forgiving of Prince's bad stuff than I perhaps should be (imo Newpower Soul isn't really bad at all, just depressingly mediocre) but this is quite painful to listen to.

This song is designed to satisy a very specific purpose, and not designed to be a top 40 hit, so yes, it sounds very different, especially if listened to without that concept in mind. Personally I feel it's a creative song and fits the viking/marching into battle/victory/comradery theme perfectly, which is what it was designed to accomplish.
Peace

Purple & Gold is likely the WORST song I've ever heard by ANY artist. I hurts more because it is Prince. Wow, I really can't believe it is serious.
The Morning After is great by the way.

I've not watched much American football, but I'm assuming that at the start of a game the teams skip around the perimeter of the field in ballet tutus, aiming to intimidate their opponents with a display of airy effeminateness, right? In that case, it's the perfect musical accompaniment. "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin
