No record label -> No payola -> no radio plays.

^^^This and people don't spend as much on music as they do on video games or cell phones.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I've been accused of being a big Prince homer, but I can't on this topic. I've said it before, but the radio situation is Prince's fault. What's happening (or not happening) now on radio all started back in 2004 when Prince made his only real mistake during the Musicology era - he released Cinnamon Girl. After all the good things of that year - historic tour, heavy video airplay, and solid radio airplay - his last significant move was to make CG his last single. The song was pushed for Pop radio and the video was controversial. It got no airplay whatsoever. Instead of continuing to regrow his Urban AC base after the Musicology and Call My Name singles, he tried to go Pop. Bad move! Then comes 3121, and the first single is Te Amo Corazon for Smooth Jazz radio. He could have continued to have R&B hits that were also Top 100 on the Pop charts, but instead he took that demographic for granted. There were songs that would have been R&B hits if released, but he chose to go in a different direction. Since 2004, I think he could have between 6-9 R&B hits that also charted on the Pop 100 if he made that his priority when releasing singles. So many things might have been different if he had (i.e. record deals, exposure, album sales).

I never thought about that. Maybe the nature of that track did have an impact on his relatiknship with the biz. Its a far from conventional viewpoint with something that has heavy price tags.

When I was a kid in the '80s James Brown's new music wasn't in heavy rotation on the radio either. Neither was Little Richard's or Frank Sinatra's. That's really all there is to that.

The only radio option he has left is strictly R&B radio, and really just Urban AC at that.

There is no doubt it's Prince's fault really, if you dont have a label behind you one that can get you radio plays, good distribution, promotion then Radio stations wont play you simple. These days the top stations have "playlists" to choose from. Radio 1 for example if its not on the playlist wit's not getting played.

.

On a different scale/genre I remember hearing something years back about a well known club brand being paid by the label to get their Dj's to play Calvin Harris tracks in their clubs often.

.

The industry is so corrupt and lost its way that real Artists are left back if they dont have the power behind them to force their way into the market.

.

I bet sometimes Prince wishes he'd have stayed with Warner.

People still listen to music on the (commercial) radio? Who knew?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
