The last thing I want is one of Prince's crappy new songs getting lots of radio airplay (I'm sorry, it's worse than some of the songs on the radio) and then people in my generation will think that those shitfests are what PRINCE is all about. The legendary singer whom everyone knows about and who has a whole legacy as a controversial pop figure, the man who created classics like Little Red Corvette, 1999, Doves, etc... kids nowadays won't hear that, they'll instead hear fucking Breakfast Can Wait and wonder who the fuck this guy was and why he was popular. They won't know he played some amazing guitar solos and created masterpiece rock-soul ballads like "The Beautiful Ones", they'll instead know he makes cheap Euro-dance copies like FIL2N and can't sing so he speeds up his voice (like AutoTune). I'd really much rather people today know nothing about Prince except for the fact he was a popular singer who had a lot of hits and they would be completely neutral to him, rather than hearing his tired old shit on the radio and thinking "this is Prince...?"

.

His new material is EMBARRASSING. After his 2k13 performance at Billboard Music awards, everyone I knew thought FixUrLifeUp was the dumbest and blandest song ever and my parents who love Let's Go Crazy thought he ruined it by singing it in such a low warbling voice. His performance was boring as hell, and this is the reason I'd rather he stayed off of radio and award shows. So people can appreciate the goodness of Prince, bc this Prince will RUIN his legacy if he becomes a successful pop star again. Do you want ppl to remember "Breakfast Can Wait" and "Fall in Love 2 Night" over songs like "Diamonds and Pearls" and "U Got the Look"?

.

ill probably get hate for writing this, but I'm talking from the viewpoint of a non-Prince fan. If those above songs weren't by Prince, no critics would be raving about them or calling them "good". Only Prince gets away with that.

Yes Im actually glad Prince won't get airplay on radio with lame songs like Breakfast can wait, Fixurlifeup and Pretzelbodylogic (Which in my opinion is the among the worst Prince songs ever). I rather prefer the old stuff gets played so people can hear some real music by Prince. Its also annoying with all his silly attempts to get airplay again, its better he focus on writing some great music again

What's wrong with Breakfast Can Wait?

Eh. It's such a boring and pointless track. I honestly don't know why, but the guy sings like a duck nowadays. Just yesterday I couldn't stop playing "Scandalous Sex Suite" and "The Most Beautiful Girl" back to back because it was so amazing how in SSS he sings "Baby.. baby... baaby" in that deep deep bedroom voice, so low I don't know any guy who could say it like that. And then in TMBGITW at the end he starts shrieking "Mars could not be too far behiiiiiiiind" in a voice higher and smoother than any woman I know could shriek in. It really attests to his genius and amazingly powerful vocal range.

.

So it's incredibly disappointing listening to P songs now where he sings like he has a cold and basically like a duck at times. "Camille" was a genius method used properly in the 80s, now he just speeds up his voice at random times and half the time it sounds like he's just trying to save his voice from sounding weak. Like was that shit necessary in Breakfast Can Wait?

.

It's an insipid plastic R&B track with weak vocal performance. It's a shame, because a lot of the MUSIC Prince puts out nowadays is actually pretty decent. It's his voice and LYRICS that ruin it lol

You know, listening to his new 3rd Eye Girl material and attempts at staying popular (R&B with Breakfast, dance with FIL2N, etc...), it gives me a new appreciation for albums like Musicology and 3121. They're not close to amazing, but compare them to the confusing stuff he's doing nowadays, they're good. I never EVER expected him to make such a blatant sell-out track like FIL2N... Shit's embarrassing. Like an old man who's trying his best to stay hip, but doing it wrong. Oh wait..

I'd have thought most Prince fans are at least 30+, i personally moved on to talk radio 20 years ago. I've certainly no interest in hearing Prince played alongside Beiber and One Direction.

.

I'm amazed so many Prince fans are still longing for him to have a modern 'hit'. It doesn't matter and it's not important. Those 'chart watch' threads earlier this year were just embarrassing. He had his chart run and it was great (back when music was still innovative, competetive and not just derivative crap).

Fair enough. It's standard R&B fare true and while I guess you could consider the lyrics corny to a certain extent, it's a smooth song with pretty interesting lyrics that somehow do the impossible and tie in sex to breakfast. It's certainly nothing groundbreaking but it's a nice, basic slow jam and it's better than the pseudo-R&B that is on the radio these days. Then again, you said it was his voice that you had a beef with so had he sang it in his traditional Prince way would you have liked the song?

I think so too. Though I'm really just now getting into him, I'd like fo consider myself a fan and I'm 20.

I agree with you on people making such a fuss over Prince not having a chart topping hit these days. His peak of popularity was in the 80s, a decade many of his fans seem stuck in with their expectations of him ruling the charts in the year 2014, 30 years after his biggest album was a thing.

I've been accused of being a big Prince homer, but I can't on this topic. I've said it before, but the radio situation is Prince's fault. What's happening (or not happening) now on radio all started back in 2004 when Prince made his only real mistake during the Musicology era - he released Cinnamon Girl. After all the good things of that year - historic tour, heavy video airplay, and solid radio airplay - his last significant move was to make CG his last single. The song was pushed for Pop radio and the video was controversial. It got no airplay whatsoever. Instead of continuing to regrow his Urban AC base after the Musicology and Call My Name singles, he tried to go Pop. Bad move! Then comes 3121, and the first single is Te Amo Corazon for Smooth Jazz radio. He could have continued to have R&B hits that were also Top 100 on the Pop charts, but instead he took that demographic for granted. There were songs that would have been R&B hits if released, but he chose to go in a different direction. Since 2004, I think he could have between 6-9 R&B hits that also charted on the Pop 100 if he made that his priority when releasing singles. So many things might have been different if he had (i.e. record deals, exposure, album sales).

The thing is, while some Prince songs have decent instrumentation, BCW isn't one of them. It's a very bland song and isn't catchy or good in any way. But then again, this is my opinion and I can understand if people like it and consider it a great slow jam. This is one of Prince's recent songs with lyrics that were pretty okay.

.

I guess what my point is that his new material for the most part sucks, and even if any song doesn't suck, it'll never be a GREAT song. It'll always just be decent. P hasn't been a huge radio hit since the 90s, so making a comeback with this crappy 3EG stuff would be so disappointing and probably wouldn't do well for his popularity. He's reached a stage in his career where he's universally respected, and is at legend status. Release FIL2N, BCW, etc.., people will go back to criticizing him as a lame-o old guy trying to stay relevant

.

If he sang it in a better voice, it would be OK. Vocals can turn a song around, so maybe I would "like" it then smile

You know, I was listening to pop radio the other day, and I was shocked at how many 56 and older astists were flooding the airwaves. It took at least two hours of listening to hear something from Lil Wayne, Lil Ice Pick, or whoever the Lil flavor of the moment is...

Even more shocking, when I put it on Adult Contemporary radio, I had to sit through the latest singles by all the old acts. Finally, a block of Billy Joel and Tom Petty that wasn't some new song.

OH...then I woke up. Hardly ANYBODY over 35 gets played, and when somebody over 50 gets played, they are usually no longer with us, like the wonderful Michael Jackson.

When us older folks were young, you could still hear a Rolling Stones single or Paul McCartney single on the radio. Not anymore. Even U2 is not likely to get much airplay when the complete their battle with Prince to see who can take the longest to release an album.

Eh, dude has 2 decades of hits. I think he is good and doesn't need airplay. People also know and love Paul Mccartney, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, dozens of classic rock bands etc. But no one really cares to hear much of their new stuff. Or they just buy the album! and don't care about a single.

The last Prince single to get some airplay was Black Sweat. It even had a VH1 Promotion i remember seeing a lot. And quite a few people at school knew the song. Since then no1cur lol and they shouldn't! all the ''singles'' he's made since then are dumb as hell. A great solution would be a Prince channel on Sirius/XM.

Springsteen's has been going great guns for several years now. Not only does it promote his new stuff, but he gets a royalty on everything played - even the fan bootleg concerts they play twice a day.

A Prince channel would be a great way for Prince to get new music out, including music that he thinks others should hear (new artists, classic songs that influenced him, etc.).

If Sirius can support a Pearl Jam station (yes -a Pearl Jam station), then I am sure a Prince station would do very well.

lol i know that! i have all of Bruces albums. I'm talking on the specifics of hit singles. Bruce still gets number 1 albums and doesn't rely on singles. Cause he's past his prime as a singles artist... as is Prince. There's dozens of artists who are loved and respected from older days. But there not going to have a top 40 hit in 2014. But the album can still sell!

I personally believe orgers should give up on prince having another hit. Dude had 2 decades of huge hits. That's more than most artists! he should focus on just selling his album as a whole.

As for artists like MJ & Madonna still getting big hits.

MJ and his passing was the most televised thing of 2009. He has been overexposed in every way since then. Add to that one of the most popular pop acts of my generation(Justin Timberriver) and of course it will be a hit.

Madonna usually had one hit off her albums now. Then her singles go nowhere after that. Her last big hit that Gimme all your bananas or whatever it was called. Went top 10 cause she performed on the super bowl. Not to mention Nicki Minaj is on it...

And the album before that? oh yeah! she had a song with Timberriver and Timbaland. And it was the only song that got radio play...

And MJ's first posthumous album had Akon on the first single. Would these artists still get hits if it was just them? no current hot acts? i highly doubt it.

I've said this before: the only way that Prince can have a radio hit these days,is to let Pharrell produce him and maybe add a "hot" rapper to the song.I know some of you think it would be beneath Prince to do this, but I'm being honest. That's the only way he can have a huge radio hit in 2014.US Radio basically ignores artists over 40,but sometimes,if they collaborate with younger artists/producers,radio will support that.

hmmm but that was his own version of a commercial,radio-friendly track. To succeed on the radio,he would actually need someone else to produce it.Pharrell is in a position these days where radio will play anything that he touches.

And MJ's first posthumous album had Akon on the first single. Would these artists still get hits if it was just them? no current hot acts? i highly doubt it.

Not saying that you are but in MJ's case you can't blame him for his image and music being milked. Also, you bring up an interesting point about today's artists being the reason why these songs from older artists have a chance for present day Top 40 relevance. I'd like to think people listened/ listen and like "Love Never Felt so Good" for Michael and not Justin Timberlake. Xscape got a good amount of promotion and people wanted a better posthumous album than Michael and I think it is doing well for those reasons. JT is reallly a non factor in the song's success IMO and pretty much just there. MJ has proven to have icredible star power even I death which is why his albums I general still sell and LNFSG is one of the songs of the summer. Madonna is pretty much the exact opposite; whatever starpower she still has isn't getting her hits, it's the people she associates with to do her new music. The woman's a has been and is probably the most desperate act in today's music scene. IDK anybody who would be rushing to buy a new Madonna album if it was just her, then again I don't know anyone who would buy onr of her new albums because of the present day hot producers and acts thst are responsible for her still having songs on the charts...

anyway, Prince should not be "chasing" hits anyway. That's what killed his career in the 90's. Pandering is never cool for a true artist like Prince

MJ and his passing was the most televised thing of 2009. He has been overexposed in every way since then. Add to that one of the most popular pop acts of my generation(Justin Timberriver) and of course it will be a hit.

If Michael were still alive,he'd be making music with the same, commercial producers that Madonna works with.Like her,he wanted "hits".I don't know why you consider her to be "desperate",but somehow it's OK when he does it hmmm The Xscape is great, but it does feature contributions from some "hot" producers and collaborators.I actually don't think there's anything wrong with this (it's pop music, afterall) but let's not act like someone else is desperate because they go this route.

"I'd like to think people listened/listen and like "Love Never Felt So Good" for Michael and not Justin Timberlake"

But let's not kid ourselves.Justin is a "hot" artist and that's why he was added to the song....to sell records and do well on the charts.Again, there's nothing wrong with this. But let's call it what is is wink

I could give a flip if he ever gets played on the radio again.I think also its his fault if noone knows these days who he is, he won't put anytrue collector's editions of anything out to this point and even though its freeanytime anyone tries to put up anything to archive certain aspects of hiscareer he freaks out and has them yanked down and threatens with lawsuits.I'm not talking about stuff he made money off of i'm talking about stuff reallynoone paid for to begin with, I mean like videos, talkshow performances, awards show performances etc.If you're gonna keep getting stuff like that yanked then exactly how is anyonesupposed to remember who you are?, especially if that person WAS NOTgrowing up during your glory days?Thats all on him and he needs to quit tripping and stop it or else everyone willhave forgotten about him. I mean at some point even us last few hardcoreswill die off.

I made no mention of what Mike would have done were he alive. I knowhe wanted hits and unless he had a revelation or change of heart, he'd probably still be trying to dominate the charts today or surpass Thriller's sales despite how impossible that would be with today's music industry. I don't sed what's such a big deal with targetting hot producers as much as many others on here do either but even so there are limits which brings me to Madonna, who is most certainly desperate to remain relevant in today's society. Gunsnhalen said it all about her; she is notorious for being wishy washy and hopping from the hottest act/ trend/ flavor of the week in order to stay in the limelight. For as much flack as MJ gets for hopping from one hot producer to another (whih he really only did for Dangerous and in the Invincible/ post-Invincible era), he never was anywhere near as bad as Madonna.

Yes, I am aware JT is one of today's top artists but on the song he was really just there. I guess you can give him credit for the song's success because of the alleged appeal in a MJ/ JT collab, the supposed new King of Pop featured on the original King of Pop's song but I doubt people flocked to this solely for the purpose of JT.

I don't like the cashing in on MJ's name by releasing posthumous albums either. I refused to buy Xscape and by the time I heard about Mihael, there were enouh bad things said about it that I forgot there was even a chace of me wanting it. I rather they didn't release any of his unreleased tracks at all as a means of respect for his wishes but yeah, making them free while noble isn't going to help the now corporatized music industry's bottom line. Just let the man rest I peace already. He made more than enough good music in his life to listen to (though it would have been nice had he made more).
