Do u blame radio? do u blame Prince? or maybe both?

Ok.... girls & boys... question

Prince's music (his newer music) isn't played in rotation, radio isn't playing new songs, Prince is unknown to most of the new generations.

So, in case this is a problem... who do u blame... question

Radio?

Prince?

Both?

the last great and very radio-friendly Prince songs were Musicology and Black Sweat. Right?

And. Even these weren't played much, afaik.

Isn't that a problem for him.... not to have his music in rotation..?

I SO don't care whether prince is played on the radio or not. Radios don't exist in my world, they're just another shitbox throwing crap at people all day long, I feel I need an umbrella every time I happen to hear the radio by chance, and I end-up covered with shit, my clothes spoiled and in need of a long shower to take away the smell.

.

Of course there r some small indy radios and now many cool online radios playing non-mainstream music, but outside of those the rest is such an intellectual and cultural vacuum that I don't wanna hear anything about it and God bless prince for not having his beautiful songs played between/alongside the likes of Pink, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha and (the current incarnation of) Black Eyed Peas.

The entire industry is upside down from the way it formerly operated. I don't know how revenue is generated these days, but I don't think it will ever return to how it was in the 80s and earlier. There are some great artists out there, I'm sure they all have a challenge making a living in this environment.

Prince never occupied the charts much after the name change around 1993. He had a continued video presence for a little time longer, but not much.

Blame the payola system, blame the reality TV that took over most video networks, or just attribute it to changing public opinion.

None of Prince's peers from his prime (Madonna, MJ, Janet, George Michael, Springsteen) have radio presence either like they did in the 80s and 90s. It's not just Prince.

Pretty much spot on.

P has never had a big radio presence.
And he now belongs to the Golden Oldies genre, so no matter how good Plectrum Electrum is, it will never be played over the airwaves.

I hear MJ's "new" releases on the radio all the time. Love Never Felt So Good was a top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic and got a shit-tonne of airplay. Madonna also gets regular spins whenever she releases a new track.

Prince (and many of his fans) kid themselves that he could have a hit song whenever he wished, but he has shown time and time again that this isn't the case. Black Sweat, Musicology, The Greatest Romance, Breakfast Can Wait, Chocolate Box, Call My Name..... all songs tailor-made to become commercial hits, and not one of them made a dent on the charts or achieved any real success on the radio, despite having the backing of a major label.

U Make My Sunshine

Muse To The Pharoh

She Loves Me 4 Me

Im not so concerned about the radio. If I want to hear Prince, I put in a CD and jam by myself. Anyway, the type of songs I like arent usually played on the radio.

MJ's label & Madonna also pay or enter into contract with clear channel to get radio play. Prince would have to negotiate the same thing if he expects to get new music on the air most likely.

Change it one more time..

Although radio play doesn't guarantee a hit, RNRLA and FALLINLIVE2NITE both had loads of play in the uk and neither had a sniff of the top 100

If you play the game and have a record company that sells your product to the masses you will get radio play and recognition amongst the masses which results in big hits.

Prince's recognition is for his live performances these days

It would be nice to see someone I have supported for a very long time get some commerical appeal but I guess it will never happen again chart wise

Breakfast Can Wait was very popular with the younger crowd. Why do we still care about radio airplay? Clear Channel decides what is popular, not the local DJs anymore.

I don't listen to the radio anyway. Here in Philadelphia they play the same 10 songs all day. I either listen to the oldies station or plug in my iPod. I'm the only 22 year old that couldn't tell you what songs are "hot" right now.

The last thing I want is one of Prince's crappy new songs getting lots of radio airplay (I'm sorry, it's worse than some of the songs on the radio) and then people in my generation will think that those shitfests are what PRINCE is all about. The legendary singer whom everyone knows about and who has a whole legacy as a controversial pop figure, the man who created classics like Little Red Corvette, 1999, Doves, etc... kids nowadays won't hear that, they'll instead hear fucking Breakfast Can Wait and wonder who the fuck this guy was and why he was popular. They won't know he played some amazing guitar solos and created masterpiece rock-soul ballads like "The Beautiful Ones", they'll instead know he makes cheap Euro-dance copies like FIL2N and can't sing so he speeds up his voice (like AutoTune). I'd really much rather people today know nothing about Prince except for the fact he was a popular singer who had a lot of hits and they would be completely neutral to him, rather than hearing his tired old shit on the radio and thinking "this is Prince...?"

.

His new material is EMBARRASSING. After his 2k13 performance at Billboard Music awards, everyone I knew thought FixUrLifeUp was the dumbest and blandest song ever and my parents who love Let's Go Crazy thought he ruined it by singing it in such a low warbling voice. His performance was boring as hell, and this is the reason I'd rather he stayed off of radio and award shows. So people can appreciate the goodness of Prince, bc this Prince will RUIN his legacy if he becomes a successful pop star again. Do you want ppl to remember "Breakfast Can Wait" and "Fall in Love 2 Night" over songs like "Diamonds and Pearls" and "U Got the Look"?

.

ill probably get hate for writing this, but I'm talking from the viewpoint of a non-Prince fan. If those above songs weren't by Prince, no critics would be raving about them or calling them "good". Only Prince gets away with that.

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

I know huh....isn't bieber making a killing right now. I know he serves up McDoubles. That MJ tune with JT is a big phat McDouble. Crap they throw out there that they know people will eat up but aint worth a damn. Not everything on the radio is crap though. I still hear that goyete tune.. Bruno...some of lady gags stuff is decent. Fancy is a big phat McDouble I happen to enjoy cheekily. I know its crap.

Radio is littered with crap bubblegum stuff...crap rap...and some decent pop now and then. Radio is a VERY casual market. It used to be an intimate, sophisticated market. The internet took that spot. Intimate sophisticated music is easily found and tracked on the net. Radio is now a casual bubble gum and casual pop market. Katy Perry's music isn't sophisticated....but it serves its purpose...its catchy and kills time in a casual market, preying in unsophisticated teeny bopper bubblegum chewers to buy the music in the phone accounts that r paid for by parents. Radio is a big ad for that market.

Radio if in a college course catalogue is 'intro to music 100a'. Were all past that and can peg its content a mile away. Were all at least in 'music 201:genere combos and atypical structure.'

Radio of the 80's and 90's served an entirely different purpose than it serves now. Most people don't genuinely care if their music is in the radio aside from a sense of approval. We all can access the music we want anywhere. There absolutely no necessity for radiontonget exposure to new sophisticated music...so it doesn't typically happen.

I think I'm rambling and repeating myself now...so I suppose I'll shut up...even though I feel I haven't expressed my self clearly or meaningfully.

We have a radio station here called Old School 100.3. Their van had different pictures, one being Prince from the 90s. They see him as an old school artist. It is obvious that he is still popular. People just do not like his newer music, not that it is easy to find for casual listeners.

We are fanatics, so we know about it. lol.

We care about his rehearsels; very few people give a shit.

Radio has been awful for decades, too much segregation. If you do hear Prince it is I Wanna Be Your Lover, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, Kiss and 1999, sometimes Adore. I haven't heard any 90s Prince on the radio in years.

Prince could put new songs on youtube like Weird Al, promote via tv interviews. That is the only way to get listeners these days. Put songs into movies, tv shows.

All those big comic book movies and he cannot get on the sound track? His fault. He does have a habit of doing movies that really bomb--Blankman anybody?

Purple man is rich enough.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!
