It's a very hard call of course, but possibly The Ballad of Dorothy Parker! It's everything Prince to me. Funky in an unconventional way. Quirky without being precious. Some of his very best lyric writing but it almost feels made up on the spot. The drum programming is off the chart. The vocal is awesome. And, it ends just when it feels like it's about to take off into something even greater. (Prince does this alot, the big tease.) Loved this track from the very first hearing and I've never failed to fall for it since. | |

I also like the fact, even now, it's a discussion piece in queues; is Prince singing a 'gay' song (as the uneducated think), is he singing it as a girl to a man or is he, as I think, singing it to his girl saying about her girl/best friend P-p-e-n-g-u-i-n......the P is silent | |
