Prince and the touch of the Orient
. Through the gates. -3121
. I hope no one is offended by the use of Orient in this thread. I know people are not 'oriental'. I want to look at the use of oriental/Asian things/places in the creative process of Prince's musical journey. Not that he actually went deep with it. Also Asian descendant musicians that Prince has worked with directly for his music or produced music for. What other touches of Asian culture that you know of are found in his music/style etc?
. . o·ri·ent (ôr-nt, -nt, r-) n.
1. Orient The countries of Asia, especially of eastern Asia.
2.
a. The luster characteristic of a pearl of high quality.
b. A pearl having exceptional luster.
3. Archaic The place on the horizon where the sun rises; the east.

Kimberly Ann Delfin, a Huntington Beach resident, died Monday after an 11 year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 47. Earlier, Delfin pursued a career as a professional dancer and actor. Nicknamed "Popsicle", she danced on "FAME", "Merv Griffin", and several other TV shows and commercials. The break dancer was even featured in Prince's music video for "Raspberry Beret", which won an award for best choreography. Specializing in pop and lock-style dancing, Delfin was responsible for popularizing several moves such as her signature "tut-toes". Her most notable acting performances included roles in "Pretty Smart", "Hunter" and "Who's the Boss", She was especially passionate about giving back to the community. In 2010, Delfin awarded a thousand dollar performing arts scholarship to an aspiring dancer from Huntington Beach High School. She is survived by her daughter, Misha Delfin; her mother, Dina Velarde; her father, Emmanuel Delfin; her siblings, Gina Lachowicz, Roy Celestino, Valarie Delfin, Anthony Delfin, Dwight Velarde, Michelle Velarde and Teresa Velarde. www.dildaybrothers.com Published in Orange County Register on May 13, 2011

Country: Japan

the sixth full-length studio album by Japanese recording artist Kahoru Kohiruimaki, and was released in Japan only in December, 1989.
The album includes the songs Mind Bells and Bliss, both co-written and mostly performed by Prince and Levi Seacer, Jr.. Kahoru Kohiruimaki's manager, Seijiro Udo, had promoted Princes Japanese concerts on the Lovesexy Tour, and Udo asked Prince to provide some tracks for Kohiruimaki.
Prince and Levi Seacer, Jr. recorded the tracks in Summer 1989, and Kohiruimaki simply overdubbed vocals for the tracks in Autumn, 1989. No singles were released from the album. As the album was not released outside of Japan, it did not enter the US charts. -PrinceVault

You might throw in the Arabic-influenced sword dancing stuff Mayte did and some of the atmospherics during the D&P tour since Oriental refers to the exoticized East from the perspective of the West.
I don't think much of it, overall. Not a thing he particularly had much handle on, just some stuff that got thrown into the mix. The guitar riff from "The Max" and 8/18/1988 "Instrumental Jam"...just little stuff like that. Every now and then

I think Vanessa Mae (known for her electric violin) has recorded some stuff with Prince. I'm tempted to say it was something to do with the Xpectation album - but I couldn't swear to it.
On the Album N.E.W.S. "East" has a flavour of the orient though arguably it's only one section of the piece.
C-note - has the songs "Tokyo" "Nagoya" a"Osaka". "Tokyo" has a very serene oriental feel to it IMO.
The songs "7" and "Thieves in the temple" also have aspects of the orient, but it'd be overstating the point to say the orient was a theme.

Yeah, for a very short time period between 2003 and early 2004 that asian musician "Rad" was in his band. She played keyboards. You can see her playing and dancing with Chance Howard on the "Musicology"-performance at the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

thanks 4 the name
From there we’re ushered to Richieworld, guitarist Richie Sambora’s area which holds his amp racks, both guitar displays and his personal tech Takumi, yet another very nice guy, fresh from a nine-year stint with Prince.

Rose Ann Dimalanta: Rad joined Prince and his band, the New Power Generation, for his Musicology tours in 2003 and 2004
Rose Ann Dimalanta, a.k.a. rad, grew up in Oakland, California and began playing piano at the age of 4. In 1990, she completed her jazz studies at U.C. Berkeley. By this time, she had already played alongside Bay Area jazz musicians like Pete Escovedo and was recognized as a pianist. In 1988, she met Sound Engineering student Michael Kirsch at the College for Recording Arts in San Francisco. The two were married in 1991 and Rose Ann moved to Kirsch's hometown Hamburg, Germany. In 1992, she started her solo project with the first release, Radified, on her husband's record label, Soulciety Records. The record instantly won critical acclaim and sold over 50,000 units independently.[citation needed] The following years brought collaborations with Tower of Power, Roger Troutman, Howard Johnson, Marc Russo of the Yellow Jackets, Sheila E. and others. After leaving the label Soulciety Records in 1996, both Rad and Kirsch moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and started attracting musicians to the project, including jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo and Tower of Power drummer David Garibaldi. Rad joined Prince and his band, the New Power Generation, for his Musicology tours in 2003 and 2004. She left the New Power Generation to focus more on her new born daughter and finish work on the album East Babe which was released on hers and Kirsch's label 7 Bridges Recordings in 2007. A live album "Live in Japan" was released in early 2008. She was joined by Patrice Rushen on her next studio album "Getting Down Is Free". After a brief stint with the Prime Time Band on NBC's Jay Leno show, she returned to live touring in 2009.
Live: Known for delivering electrifying live performances with her band, rad. repeatedly sold out London's Jazz Caf?and Paris' Hot Brass Club, and in the early 90's shared the stage with such luminaries as Incognito, Maceo Parker, Carleen Anderson, Raw Stylus, and ex-James Brown's right hand man Bobby Byrd. In 1995, she performed in San Francisco for the United Nations 50th Anniversary Celebration-Festival and co-hosted the popular "Groove" show on Euro-VH1. rad. toured Japan with the drummer Sheila E. which in 2002 led to Southern California performances with Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow, Wendy & Lisa, Mick Fleetwood and grammy award winning gospel singer Yolanda Adams. Thanks to a recommendation from NPG drummer John Blackwell, who listens to rad. since 1993, rad. joined Prince's band in mid 2003 and toured with Prince & the NPG until spring 2004.

Don't forget 'Habibi', the font on , and ATWIAD. There's a lot of this stuff.
(Also, "Oriental" refers to objects. "Orientalism"--per Said--refers to the West exoticizing and defining the East.)

Prince's Nude tour outfits sometimes had Kana written on them. I think it said stuff like "Love, sex etc".
I'm not really sure from what I can see on the picture above but from my fucking awful Kana reading skills I'm gonna take a guess that it says "Nuido" (how the Japanese would pronounce the western word "Nude"). I swear to fucking god I'm such a weeaboo I knew I should of avoided this thread
Anyway, have Prince written in Kana because its pretty:
