Prince and the touch of the Orient

.

Through the gates.
Knock on the door.
Put your clothes in a pile, on the floor.
Take your pick from the Japanese robes and sandals.

.

I hope no one is offended by the use of Orient in this thread. I know people are not 'oriental'.

I want to look at the use of oriental/Asian things/places in the creative process of Prince's musical journey. Not that he actually went deep with it.

Also Asian descendant musicians that Prince has worked with directly for his music or produced music for.

What other touches of Asian culture that you know of are found in his music/style etc?

1. Orient The countries of Asia, especially of eastern Asia.
2.
a. The luster characteristic of a pearl of high quality.
b. A pearl having exceptional luster.
3. Archaic The place on the horizon where the sun rises; the east.

Kimberly Ann Delfin, a Huntington Beach resident, died Monday after an 11 year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 47. Earlier, Delfin pursued a career as a professional dancer and actor. Nicknamed "Popsicle", she danced on "FAME", "Merv Griffin", and several other TV shows and commercials. The break dancer was even featured in Prince's music video for "Raspberry Beret", which won an award for best choreography. Specializing in pop and lock-style dancing, Delfin was responsible for popularizing several moves such as her signature "tut-toes". Her most notable acting performances included roles in "Pretty Smart", "Hunter" and "Who's the Boss", She was especially passionate about giving back to the community. In 2010, Delfin awarded a thousand dollar performing arts scholarship to an aspiring dancer from Huntington Beach High School. She is survived by her daughter, Misha Delfin; her mother, Dina Velarde; her father, Emmanuel Delfin; her siblings, Gina Lachowicz, Roy Celestino, Valarie Delfin, Anthony Delfin, Dwight Velarde, Michelle Velarde and Teresa Velarde. www.dildaybrothers.com

Mindbells

Uh oh, there they go lurkin' in my mind
Try 2 stop'em, I am lost in time
So lost, the best that I did is go huntin' 'em down
Everybody thinks I'm crazy, but I know that U're the reason 4 the sound

CHORUS:
Mindbells every time U touch me
Mindbells every time U're near
When U sing with your body, baby
When U sing with your body, baby
Mindbells is all I hear, oh

Mindbells

Listen..
Every time U tell me I'm the one 4 U
And I just can't believe it's me U're talking 2
And my life and destiny, they scare me so
What am I gonna do, I can't let U go

CHORUS

Like the choir sings (la la la la la la)
These mindbells, they ring (ding dong)
I want U now
(Take me)

Oh, mi..mindbells
Mi..mi..mi..mindbells

Can it be these bells I hear ring 4 more than me?
Am I just another star, one of your fantasies?
No baby, baby, don't let it be
Can't U see this love is killing me?

Mindbells every time U touch me (Killing me, yeah)
Mindbells every time U're near (Come near)
When U sing with your body, baby
When U sing with your body, baby
Mindbells is all I hear, oh

Mind Bells is the sixth track on Kahoru Kohiruimaki's sixth album Time The Motion (the first of two Prince-related tracks). The track was written and produced by Prince and Levi Seacer, Jr.
While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in Summer 1989, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions as Bliss, Shall We Dance, Sex, Heaven Must Be Near and Seven Corners). Kahoru Kohiruimaki's manager, Seijiro Udo, had promoted Prince's Japanese concerts on the Lovesexy Tour, and Udo asked Prince to provide some tracks for Kohiruimaki, leading to the recording of Mind Bells and Bliss. Kahoru Kohiruimaki recorded her own vocals over the basic tracks in Autumn 1989 -PrinceVault

Mindbells
This is Prince's version given to Japanese artist Kahoru Kohiruimaki for her 1989 Time The Motion album. She simply substituted his vocals for her own. The song has a production date of September 3rd, 1989, which probably refers to the final mix date.

Bliss is the seventh track on Kahoru Kohiruimaki's sixth album Time The Motion (the second of two Prince-related tracks). The track was written and produced by Prince and Levi Seacer, Jr.
While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in Summer 1989, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions as Mind Bells, Shall We Dance, Sex, Heaven Must Be Near and Seven Corners). Kahoru Kohiruimaki's manager, Seijiro Udo, had promoted Prince's Japanese concerts on the Lovesexy Tour, and Udo asked Prince to provide some tracks for Kohiruimaki, leading to the recording of Mind Bellsand Bliss. Kahoru Kohiruimaki recorded her own vocals over the basic tracks in Autumn 1989 (studio information is needed for her recording).

The sky looks like it's turnin'
Turnin' from blue 2 black
Still I feel the sun is burnin'
Hot monkey on my back
Am I in a speeding car?
Am I lying in your bed?
One kiss from U is all that I do
And I'm outta my head (My head, my head)

Bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God
Wish that I could spend everynight with this feeling some more
Bliss

Just as sure as this lighted candle
I can handle anything
Don't hold nothin' back
2night baby, U're the king
Birds are singin', mindbells are ringin'
I can see everything

We should take a moment
2 praise the heavens above
Every man should be so lucky (So lucky)
So lucky 2 be in love

Bliss
The sky is turnin'
Turnin' from blue 2 black (Black)
Bliss
Can't U feel the sun burnin'?
Hot monkey on my back (Back)
Get off!

Am I in a speeding car?
Am I lying in your bed?
One kiss from U is all that I do
And I'm outta my head (I'm outta my head)

Oh bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God
Wish that I could spend everynight with this feeling some more

Oh bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God
I wish that I could spend... this feeling, this feeling

Oh bliss
This is heaven, I swear 2 God {fade out}
Wish I could spend everynight, all night with this ...

You might throw in the Arabic-influenced sword dancing stuff Mayte did and some of the atmospherics during the D&P tour since Oriental refers to the exoticized East from the perspective of the West.

I don't think much of it, overall. Not a thing he particularly had much handle on, just some stuff that got thrown into the mix. The guitar riff from "The Max" and 8/18/1988 "Instrumental Jam"...just little stuff like that.

Every now and then
There comes a time you must defend
Your right to die and live again --
And again, and again...

I think Vanessa Mae (known for her electric violin) has recorded some stuff with Prince. I'm tempted to say it was something to do with the Xpectation album - but I couldn't swear to it.

On the Album N.E.W.S. "East" has a flavour of the orient though arguably it's only one section of the piece.

C-note - has the songs "Tokyo" "Nagoya" a"Osaka". "Tokyo" has a very serene oriental feel to it IMO.

The songs "7" and "Thieves in the temple" also have aspects of the orient, but it'd be overstating the point to say the orient was a theme.

Yeah, for a very short time period between 2003 and early 2004 that asian musician "Rad" was in his band. She played keyboards. You can see her playing and dancing with Chance Howard on the "Musicology"-performance at the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

thanks 4 the name

Takumi Suetsugu

From there we’re ushered to Richieworld, guitarist Richie Sambora’s area which holds his amp racks, both guitar displays and his personal tech Takumi, yet another very nice guy, fresh from a nine-year stint with Prince.

Richieworld
Takumi hard at work in Richieworld

Taken from Guitar Player, January 2000

Photograph shows a selection of prince's guitars with the following text: The Artist's stage axes include (from L-R) a custom Schecter nicknamed 'Habibi', a Warwick bass, an Ibanez george Benson, and a David Rusen 'Cloud.' Guitar tech Takumi Suetsugu reports that the solidbody guitars are equipped with EMG pickups and strung with .009 - .042 guage High Beams. All of the stage lines are from Monster Cable.

Second photograph shows Prince's view of his pedalboard which is explained as follows:

Left side: Roland FC-100; Boss DS-2 Turbo Overdrive; Boss VB-2 Vibrato; Boss DD-3 Digital Delay; Boss FL-2 Flanger; Boss OC-2 Octave; Boss BD-2 Blues Driver

Right Side: (Dunlop) CryBaby Wah; Roland EV-5 (controls GP-16 whammy); Dunlop Rotovibe

Text explains:

UHF signals from the Artist's four main stage guitars hit a wireless rack equipped with four Sampson UR 5Ds. An Uptown Technologies Flash switcher is used to select between the wireless units. The Digital Music Corp MX-8 is used for MIDI switching, the Roland GP-16 is for whammy effects only and the Zoom 9030 is used for all other effects. An Uptown Great Divide routes signal from the Snyder unit to Flash switcher #2, the GP-16, and the main and backup 9030s. Outputs from these units feed a Behringer Denoiser, a Soldano/caswell preamp and, finally, a splitter box which sends 'clean' and 'dirty' signals to the Mesa/Boogie Strategy 500 and rackmount Soldano SLO 100 respectively.

Onstage Cabinets are straight-front Peavey 5150 4 x 12s loaded with EV speakers. The offstage 'clean dog' and 'dirty dog' Marshall 4 x 12 slant cabinets are miked to feed the front-of-house system. These are loaded with Celestion vintage 30s.

The illustration provides greater detail together with the wiring.

The interview also provides input largely about recording for 'Rave' (the album.)

Hans Buff provides some detail, including: 'The Artist's favourite funk setup is his Hohner Tele copy equipped with Fender noiseless pickups through either a Countryman or an Avalon direct box, then into a DiMideo mic preamp, and finally through a compressor, usually a tube Urei LA2A.

The Prince Q & A is not particularly long, but it provides the sort of technical detail he rarely offers in standard interviews: e.g.

Q 'How did you get such a massive sound on 'So Far, So Pleased'?'

A 'I ran my guitar through a Boss Vibrato and Flanger. The octave and delay effects are from the Zoom 9030.'

Then again, he still provides his usual:

Q 'Speaking of 'Crystal Ball', how did you get that eerie tone in 'Animal Kingdom' and the incredible rhythm guitar in 'Da Bang'?'

A If I told you , you'd have to die.

Rose Ann Dimalanta: Rad joined Prince and his band, the New Power Generation, for his Musicology tours in 2003 and 2004

Rose Ann Dimalanta, a.k.a. rad, grew up in Oakland, California and began playing piano at the age of 4. In 1990, she completed her jazz studies at U.C. Berkeley. By this time, she had already played alongside Bay Area jazz musicians like Pete Escovedo and was recognized as a pianist. In 1988, she met Sound Engineering student Michael Kirsch at the College for Recording Arts in San Francisco. The two were married in 1991 and Rose Ann moved to Kirsch's hometown Hamburg, Germany. In 1992, she started her solo project with the first release, Radified, on her husband's record label, Soulciety Records. The record instantly won critical acclaim and sold over 50,000 units independently.[citation needed] The following years brought collaborations with Tower of Power, Roger Troutman, Howard Johnson, Marc Russo of the Yellow Jackets, Sheila E. and others. After leaving the label Soulciety Records in 1996, both Rad and Kirsch moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and started attracting musicians to the project, including jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo and Tower of Power drummer David Garibaldi. Rad joined Prince and his band, the New Power Generation, for his Musicology tours in 2003 and 2004. She left the New Power Generation to focus more on her new born daughter and finish work on the album East Babe which was released on hers and Kirsch's label 7 Bridges Recordings in 2007. A live album "Live in Japan" was released in early 2008. She was joined by Patrice Rushen on her next studio album "Getting Down Is Free". After a brief stint with the Prime Time Band on NBC's Jay Leno show, she returned to live touring in 2009.

Live: Known for delivering electrifying live performances with her band, rad. repeatedly sold out London's Jazz Caf?and Paris' Hot Brass Club, and in the early 90's shared the stage with such luminaries as Incognito, Maceo Parker, Carleen Anderson, Raw Stylus, and ex-James Brown's right hand man Bobby Byrd. In 1995, she performed in San Francisco for the United Nations 50th Anniversary Celebration-Festival and co-hosted the popular "Groove" show on Euro-VH1. rad. toured Japan with the drummer Sheila E. which in 2002 led to Southern California performances with Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow, Wendy & Lisa, Mick Fleetwood and grammy award winning gospel singer Yolanda Adams. Thanks to a recommendation from NPG drummer John Blackwell, who listens to rad. since 1993, rad. joined Prince's band in mid 2003 and toured with Prince & the NPG until spring 2004.

Prince's Nude tour outfits sometimes had Kana written on them.

I think it said stuff like "Love, sex etc".

I'm not really sure from what I can see on the picture above but from my fucking awful Kana reading skills I'm gonna take a guess that it says "Nuido" (how the Japanese would pronounce the western word "Nude").

I swear to fucking god I'm such a weeaboo I knew I should of avoided this thread

Anyway, have Prince written in Kana because its pretty:
