Rockhard In A Funky Place

Is this the quintessential Prince song or what?

Funky

Rock

Dirty

Horns

Religious

Female background singers

Great Guitar Solo

Great title

Camille

Great lyrics

Great Word Play

Just listening to this song, it has all the classic Prince elements, too bad it is buried in the Black Album, I can't imagine many people other than us have heard this gem.

If the Black album was released this could easily have been a hit

Susannah Melvoin's camille backing voice, dirty rock, I loved this song always

Well, yes. It's a quintessential in the sense that it has the elements that many fans love the most about Prince's music.

It's something you can be play for someone that's just heard the hits if you want to expose another side of him to people. Couldn't be further away from "Purple Rain", actually.

Ít's what we non-deaf people call a throwaway.

I would agree but for the lyrics "I just hate to see an erection go to waste". I just cringe a bit at that part (loved it when I was young but now when my kids sing along.... eek)

It's always a good question what's appropriate for the kids to hear if you happen to be a Prince fan and have a family. I don't think that lyric is especially bad though, what's stated at the end of the night is far more questionable (the "keep your finger on the trigger" part).

It's fantastic, but it couldn't be a hit. Never. It's too uncommercial, strange, the high pitched "chipmunk" voice would irritate the mainstream record buyer, and pop radio wouldn't play it. I've never heard such great tracks on pop radio.

That guitar solo is major. I love it! Has he ever done this one in concert?

Everything he recorded around this time was delightfully quirky and cartoonesque.

The horns are so f#cking brilliant on this song, after all those years I still can't sing along to them correctly, such difficult but excellent melodies.

Sorry I did not mean 4 that comment to go in that direction. I talking moreso from a Prince excited direction. If he released this album in the Purple underground this song to me would have hit

.

But If I Was Your Girlfriend also had the 'chipmunk' voice as well as Love or Money, Erotic City displayd that voice. But timing is everything, 1986/87 would be the perfect time to try it in Pop culture. I wouldn't sell to short the possible audience who would love this song at the time.

I really don't think it was all that uncommercial or strange.. It was funk, that horn line was used by Prince in songs live/studio on songs in SOTT & Lovesexy. This is a Prince song, and definately would get the attention of radio in 1987.

.

I also think in certain ways the song 3121 feels like Rock Hard in A Funky Place

The production always annoyed me with this one. This and 2 Nigs are the worst produced tracks on the album. Always bugged me.

Production or recording?

.

Yes it sounds like it was recorded on a tape deck, but production wise I think its great, athough it does get a little messy towards the end.

.

Still.... one of my favourite P songs. cool

Prince never worries about the sound of a song. Just the sound that comes out of his head.

This song is FUNKY & NASTY like Eye like it!!!

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince
