ATWIAD (1985)
Parade (1986)

A year apart, close call, I do like the B-sides from both albums -- I wish the extended versions were on CD. I remember getting "hooked" on Prince because of extended versions of GIRL, She's always in my Hair, Hello, America, etc, etc.

Purple Rain for me. I have all the lyrics and music notes etched on my brain cells. I can play it in my head if there is no music box around. Been listening to it since it came out. I also listen to Parade a lot too. But not as much as PR. I don't know how many copies of PR I have. I still have that LP one that has been played a few times and that's it. It included a mini-poster in it.

1 PURPLE RAIN & AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY

Purple Rain & Atwiad are different but still they both
have that typical Prince & The Revolution sound musicheadbang

3 PARADE

Let's face it, a lot of 'fillers': the first 4 (Tracy's Parade, New Position, I Wonder U & Under The Cherry Moon are... not great, to say the least) and Venus De Milo, Do U Lie... not great either sorry demon

If it wasn't for songs like Girls And Boys, Mountains & Sometimes It Snows In April, i wouldn't even like Parade. Even Kiss is NOT in my favorite Prince list!
Sure his looks might b better but i do not take that into consideration, and oh yeah the movie sucked too... Purple Rain was great, UTCM not so great.

as this "heated debate" continues about the best "Revolution" album..

here's why I think Parade is the best of the 3:

Purple Rain was of course a very solid album, but in some ways it seemed.. "calculated".. like someone (even Prince?) said: "okay, this album's gonna have a 'real rockin' song, it's gonna have a beautiful ballad, it's gonna have a sort of 'new wave' type song, etc.."

Then, Around The World In A Day was similar, because it almost seemed like it was calculated to be the "Anti-Purple Rain"..

With Parade, though.. it seems as though it were simply:

"fuck it - we just gon' make the fun & funky kind of album WE want to make.. not 'in response' to any other previous album or song or whatever.."

Parade is arguably the most "adventurous" yet coherent album Prince has ever done.

THERE ARE MANY REASONS Parade is KICKING PR's & ATWIAD's asses in this poll..!

OVER SEVENTEEN YEARS AFTER ITS RELEASE,
PARADE IS A MASTERPIECE, CLEARLY 1 of Prince's best recordings..
whether anyone agrees or not.
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Parade seems like the "truest" Revolution album. It had the most creative input from the band I thought. No single played, writen, produced songs from solely Prince like Purple Rain and ATWIAD did.

I don't care if it counts "officially"- 1999 is it! If not, cast my vote for "Parade."

Best 'Prince and the Revolution' album?

Purple Rain: 7 votes
ATWIAD: 3 votes
Parade: 22 votes

Parade is clearly the fan's favourite but is it really a better album than Purple Rain? I beg to differ.

disbelief

I only really enjoy side 1 of PR esp.The Beautiful Ones,Computer Blue & Darling Nikki(the music, not the lyrics)
Side 2 I RARELY listen to.
The most classic, hypnotic single of Prince's career, When Doves Cry; sizzling with exuberance, one of the most electric pop singles of Prince's career, I Would Die 4 U; perhaps the most staple, tried and tested, crowd pleaser for an encore, Baby I'm A Star; and the song Prince will forever be remembered for, Purple Rain. This is just one side of Purple Rain. Parade is not the best 'Prince and the Revolution' album. It is, however, most fan's favourite choice.

disbelief

I have to agree with you, Purple Rain is the best, most balanced Prince and The Revolution album, although I seldom listen to it. I also have to say that Parade gets more spins in my CD player, so probably that's my personal favorite in the end. But as an album, PR really stands out...
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I really love Parade -- always have, since purchasing the vinyl back in '86. I even like the songs that others might call more 'experimental'; it's just a fun, enjoyable album which (as others have said) also seems to be the Revolution's most collaborative work as well.

Parade definitely gets my vote.

From what I remember, the whole band has the most input on Parade. I believe the others were mostly Prince solo's.

yet Purple Rain is still a very compelling listen...

I'm surprised Parade is everyone's favorite Revolution album.
Prince himself has gone on record saying that it's the
one album he's made that he wasn't happy with, and
thought could've been a lot better.

He also said that Emancipation was the best thing he ever did back in the day. Go figure.

Parade by a mile - I love certain songs from PR but prefer Parade as a whole.

p.s. I've listened to Parade far more than I've listened to PR so it isn't a question of overload.

When Doves Cry is a stunning song, but then again Kiss was just as good a single, although I don't like it as much. And as for Purple Rain the song, now that song is definitely a 'fan's favourite', but personally I think it's turgid crap in comparison to Sometimes it Snows. Overall I think it is a vibe thing that elevates Parade over Purple Rain. I like RC for the same reason, although it doesn't contain any classic singles material.

By the way, I thought you were quite cool until your final comment above. do you really think that you know better than everyone else?

Turgid crap?? Man listen to yourself, Purple Rain is SUPERB, whether it is a fan's favourite or not, doesn't (and shouldn't) make any difference. And it's definitely not 'crap' in comparison with Sometimes It Snows In April duh... rolleyes
